Describe the character - Jamie
- Jamie, a man who fell in love with Nola since the
day he met her on the street. Jamie always feels
jealous whenever Nola interacts with others
including Opal, one of Nola’s friends. Jamie takes
Nola as his possession, trying to control her as he
thinks that Nola loves him the most. However,
Jamie had always been waiting for Nola to have
only him, he chose Nola over other girls as he
believed that one day he could be able to stop
Nola. Moreover, Jamie is kind of an aggressive
man, when he tried to moving forward and Nola
called him back, he acted abusively toward Nola
because things didn’t go as he thought.
Describe the character - Mars
- Spike Lee as Mars Blackmon is a bicycle messenger
whom is one of Nola’s boyfriend. He is a funny guys
who always make Nola laugh. However, Nola seem
not to interested at him that much as when he wish
her a happy birthday on phone and he wanted to
see her on that night, she declines it and she even
think that he didn’t love her, he just in love with her
lovemaking. Moreover, he appear to not mature
enough throughout the whole movie and show that
he is not intelligence while playing scrabble with
others. When Nola breakup with him, he is not
accepted at first but it end up happily and Nola wish
for him to grow up.
Describe the character - Greer
- Greer is a person who have a high
self-confident, ego, and self obsessed
model. He likes to complain about Nola
and how she should posit herself, being his
girlfriend. He also tries to point out that
he’s the one who molded Nola became a
better person, compare her to a lump of
clay. He wants to own the control of Nola
by telling her want to do, and that’s
opposite to who she is.
Each character’s view on Nola
For this part, each character, Greer, Jamie, and Mars, everyone has different perspective on Nola.
Start with Greer, he was the richest man among three Nola’s boyfriends and had many girls waiting
for him. He had not to choose Nola or could leave her whenever. His aspect for Nola is that she is
just another one girl that he want to keep as a collection and play with. Greer also sees Nola as a sick
woman who needs a therapy since he thinks of her as a sex-addicted person. Greer tries to persuade
Nola to become better in his perspective but Nola realises her worth and doesn’t follow what he
suggest.

Next is Jamie’s view on Nola, since he is a jealous person, he acts as Nola is his possession trying to
keep her away from other people. Nearly end of the movie, Jamie threaten Nola with words trying to
make her choose him because he thinks that Nola cannot be without him if he leaves her. He sees
Nola as a playgirl who cannot stop flirting around and only see his importance when she needs
something from him. In the end, Jamie realises that he can’t change Nola since she is the one who
owns her life, she doesn’t get rid of people Jamie told her to do and also chooses to let go of Jamie
since she knows her desire.
Each character’s view on Nola
For Mars Blackmon, he viewed Nola as a
mature woman that want his ridiculous
jokes, and Nola must be indispensable for
his jokes. Additionally, he saw Nola
important because he could play and
release his childness with, and Nola often
showed her sympathy of caring one man
to Mars. These things may be something
Mars wanted the most, and Nola can
offer him.
Scenes and details that support your ideas
- For Greer, according to the scene we first saw Greer Childs. His gesture
and how he speaks show his high self-confidence. And the second scene
that support my idea about Greer is where Greer was in Nola’s room. He’s
exercise and look at himself proudly shows his self-obsessed, and when
the female doctor disagree about his thoughts, he gets turned out and
angry. And that’s show his high ego, he strongly believe in his point.
- For Mars, according to the scene when they’re together at her room. He
tries to make Nola laugh by telling her a story, and he’s also the only
boyfriend who have some sense of humor. But most of the scenes he
shows us his immature sides, he tried to pick a fight with Greer every time
they met.
Scenes and details that support your ideas
- Lastly, the scenes that support Jamie’s view on Nola as mentioned are the
scene that he went to visit Nola at her room and met with Opal; this scene,
Jamie uses his word and expression letting Opal knows that he is
uncomfortable to see her in the room with his girlfriend. After Opal left, Jamie
tells Nola that he doesn’t like this friend of her, trying to persuade her to stop
interact with Opal. Another scene is at the nearly end of this movie where he
got a call from Nola said she was in urgent asking him to come over and when
he arrived he realised that she only needs something from him so he acts
abusively towards her and says harsh words indicating that he doesn’t believe
in love she has for him anymore.
Describe and discuss the main character of Nola. How does she see each of the
men in her life? How does she see herself?
- She considered herself as a normal person and she don’t believe in labels.
Nola is an independent mind women who knows what she like and what she
wants out of her life. She’s attractive and she have no problem with it, but
men who entered her life isn’t what she wants yet. Jamie who seem to be the
right one ended up not the one she’s looking for, he wants another kind of
woman and that’s not who she is.
- She see
- Greer as a man who forcing in her life for making her identities and choices
too much.
- Mars as a funny man who is not mature enough with making decision.
- Jamie as a man who wanted mythic old-fashioned girl and wanted her to be
like that which not suit her.
Overall Themes: Female Identity and Choice
● Throughout the whole movie, Nola’s boyfriends, Greer,
Jamie and Mars’ are trying to manipulate her to become
what they what. But at the end, she takes a step to decide
she want by herself.
● There is a scene when she went to see the doctor because
Greer said that Nola is having mental issue. She went there a
couple of time then she stop going because she is
confidence that she is fine.
● Another supporting scene is the last one, when she talk for
herself by telling how she feel and who she is. “My body, my
mind. Who is gonna own it, them..or me.” is a really powerful
remark to say women can choose for their own identities
and choices.
