Task 1

The line chart below shows the results of a survey giving the reasons why people moved to
the capital city of a particular country.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make
comparisons where relevant.

The chart shows a survey between the years 2000 and 2015 on why people from particular
countries move to the capital city.
The two most common reasons why people move to the capital are employment and
studying. Namely, at the beginning of the period in the year 2000 around 60 thousand people
said they moved to the capital because of employment purposes. In comparison, at the same
time interval the study reason for moving to the capital was still fairly low, with only around
15 thousand listings. As years went by, in 2005 and 2010 both of these ‘to move’ factors had
experienced a fluctuating increasing rate, with studying showcasing a much steeper increase
rate compared to that of employment. In 2010 however, the rate of employment as a reason to
move to the capital started slowly declining up until the end of the period in 2015, whereas
study goals had experience the steepest increase in this same time period, eventually making
both these factors to intersect at around 88 thousand as per people’s reason to move in 2015.
The other two less common reasons to move to the capital of a particular country are
family/friends and adventure. These two factors have a fairly low number throughout the
entire period with a fairly flat increasing rate. Namely, both have been listed at around 12
thousand in the year 2000, with family/friends factor to move to the capital being listed by 22
thousand people in 2015, whereas for the same year adventure was listed by only 15 thousand
people.
In conclusion, we note that employment historically has been the most common reason why
people move to the capital of particular country. However, the steep increase of people
pursuing a study goal in the capital has made studying and employment intersect in 2015
becoming the two most popular reasons to move. In contrast, family/friends and adventure as
factors to move both historically and in present day represent a relatively low number of
people listing them as a reason to move.

Task 2

The position of women has changed a great deal in many societies over the past 50 years. But
these societies cannot claim to have achieved gender equality.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Many people agree that in the past 50 years the position of women in societies has improved
significantly, but still a total gender equality has not been reached. I believe this statement is
fairly true and this can be seen if we take into account indicators such as salaries and job
positions.

Considering how much money women make now in comparison to 50 years ago in absolute
terms it is clear that there had been significant improvements. In other words, present day
jobs have been more equated based on job description and performance and salaries are
earned based on these factors, ultimately helping women to earn more money in absolute
terms. In relative terms however, when comparing women’s salaries for the same jobs
compared to those of men, there is still a disparity in favour of men. Therefore, an argument
stands that income distribution is still an obstacle in the path of gender equality.

Another indicator for gender equality is job positions available to the market for both men
and women. When considering the past 50 year, many women were practically unable to
even apply for certain jobs in many societies. This has fortunately changed in present times
and more and more women are able to pursue the career that they want, making a big step
towards gender equality in modern societies. However, statistics show that some important
corporate or political positions in present times are still being held by men, which
unfortunately contributes to the case of gender inequality.

In conclusion, overviewing the case of gender equality 50 years ago and comparing it to
present day, in absolute terms huge progress has been made towards the inclusion of women.
However, considering what men earn in comparison to women and what job positions they
hold in comparison to women, it is clear that modern societies are still faced with the
challenge of improving gender equality in relative terms.
