INTRODUCTION

1.1 Brief Introduction to SIWES

The student work experience scheme (SIWES) is a worldwide program practiced in countries

like Japan, Australia, USA, Europe, and in African countries too. It is popularly known as

cooperative education and referred to as sandwich in Europe. It was established by ITF in 1973

to solve the problem of lack of adequate practical skills preparatory for employment in industries

by Nigerian graduates of tertiary institutions.

The program was initially introduced in Nigeria by the Industrial Training Fund (I.T.F.)

which was established under Decree 47 of 1972 by the Supreme Military Council, headed by

General Yakubu Gowon. The Decree was billed to take effect from 31st March, 1974 and had as

its core objective, the gradual reduction of the percentage of foreign participation in most of

Nigeria’s economic activities, accompanied by a systematic cooperation of locally oriented

skilled manpower into the vast economic sector.

One of the key functions of the ITF is to work as cooperative body with industry and

commerce where students in institutions of higher learning can undertake mid-career work

experience attachment in industries which are compatible with student’s area of study. The

students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a skill Training program designed to

expose and prepare students for the Industrial work situation which they are likely to meet after

graduation.

1
Participation in SIWES has become a necessary pre-condition for the award of Diploma and

Degree certificates in specific disciplines in most institutions of higher learning in the country, in

accordance with the education policy of government.

• Operators - The ITF, the coordinating agencies (NUC, NCCE, NBTE), employers of
labor and the institutions.
• Funding - The Federal Government of Nigeria.
• Beneficiaries - Undergraduate students of the following: Agriculture, Engineering,
Technology, Environmental, Science, Education, Medical Science and Pure and Applied
Sciences.
• Duration - Four months for Polytechnics and Colleges of Education, and Six months for
the Universities.

1.2 Objectives of SIWES

i. Provide an avenue for students in institutions of higher learning to acquire industrial

skills and experience in their approved course of study and also by interacting with
people with more experience in the field under consideration.
ii. Prepare students for the industrial work situation which they are likely to meet after
graduation.
iii. Expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and
machinery that are mostly not available in their various institutions.
iv. Provide students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge in real world situation
thereby reducing the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical work.
v. Enlist and strengthen employers’ involvement in the entire educational process and
prepare students for employment in Industry and Commerce.

3.1 Introduction to Computer

A computer system, be it micro, a mainframe or super computer, consist of both hardware

and software. It is an electronic machine capable of accepting data, process the data into

meaningful information as output.

A computer is a machine or tool, which is capable of:

1. Taking input data
2. Storing the input data.
3. Processing the input data.
4. Producing the output report on paper or computer for human being to use.

The term computer is obtained from the word compute.

Part of Computer

There are two main parts of computers, hardware and software.

1. HARDWARE: these are all the parts of computer you can see and touch or visible part
of a computer i.e. it is the physical device one can see and touch that ranges from the
smallest of chips to the total unit called computer system.
2. SOFTWARE: these are the lists of instructions needed by a computer to perform
specific tasks. Software is often called a program, most times they are compilation of
codes written in specific language (like Java, Python, PHP, VB.Net, C#, ASP.Net etc.) to
achieve certain tasks.

Types of Software

There are two types of software.

5
1. System Software: this serves as the interface between the application software and the
computer’s hardware. It manages the computer resources and enables the computer to
function smoothly. Example: Operating System, Utility software, device drivers,
firmware, BIOS and UEFI, translator, etc.
2. Application Software: this serves as the interface between the system software and the
end user. example of application software is Microsoft Word, Microsoft Visual Studio,
Notepad++, Adobe Photoshop, google chrome, CorelDraw, etc.

3.2 Introduction to HTML

HTML is the standard markup language for creating Web pages which stands for Hyper

Text Markup Language. It describes the structure of a Web page which consists of a series of

elements. HTML elements tell the browser how to display the content.

HTML Element

An HTML element is defined by a start tag, some content, and an end tag:

<tagname> Content goes here... </tagname>

Note: The HTML element is everything from the start tag to the end tag e.g.

<h1>My First Heading</h1>

<p>My first paragraph.</p>

Note: Some HTML elements have no content (like the <br> element). These elements are called
empty elements. Empty elements do not have an end tag!

6
Simple HTML Document

<html>

<head><title>Page Title</title></head>

<body>

<h1>My First Heading</h1>

<p>My first paragraph.</p>

</body>

</html>

Exampled Explained

• The <html> element is the root element of an HTML page

• The <head> element contains meta information about the HTML page
• The <title> element specifies a title for the HTML page (which is shown in the browser's
title bar or in the page's tab)
• The <body> element defines the document's body, and is a container for all the visible
contents, such as headings, paragraphs, images, hyperlinks, tables, lists, etc.
• The <h1> element defines a large heading  The <p> element defines a paragraph

Web Browsers

The purpose of a web browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari) is to read HTML documents and

display them correctly.

7
A browser does not display the HTML tags, but uses them to determine how to display the

document

HTML Editors

Editors are used to format html tags for the browser to load or display the result (output).

Example of html editor include the following: notepad, notepad++, dreamweaver, fontpage,

visual studio code, etc.

HTML using Notepad

Web pages can be created and modified by using professional HTML editors or ordinary HTML

editors

8
Steps to create web page with Notepad Step
1: Windows 8 or later:

Open the Start Screen (the window symbol at the bottom left on your screen). Type Notepad.

Windows 7 or earlier:

9
Step 4: Viewing HTML page in the browser

Open the saved HTML file in your favorite browser (double click on the file, or right-click - and

choose "Open with")

3.3 Introduction to Microsoft Word

Microsoft word is used for typing, editing, storing, and printing of texts through an

electronic device called computer. It can also be defined as the act of manipulation characters to

create a professional looking document through the computer.

Some important keywords in the definition

1. Typing: This is done by using the keyboard. The keyboard as it is known as input device.
It has about 108 keys on it. There are five part of the keyboards namely: function keys
e.g. f1-f12, computer keys e.g. Esc, ctrl, shift, etc. Typing keys A-Z, Dedicated keys e.g.
page up, page down, Arrow keys and Numeric keypad.
2. Editing. This is the act of correcting error (s) in a document. It also involves rearranging
the document so as to give a perfect, desire, and professional result.
3. Storing: This is the same thing as saving a document into the permanent memory so as to

3.4 Knowledge Gained During the SIWES

The student industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) exercise has contributed greatly

in my academic carrier, because I have gained divers experience which is very useful to my field

of study.

The first advantage acquired during my industrial training program was that I was able to

see & know the clear application of computer in my course of study.

Finally, my perception about office profession has been greatly widely broadened. It

gives me the opportunity to gain first experience of the profession even though it was not easy.

12
CHAPTER FOUR

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

4.1 Conclusion

The whole experience gained during the attachment at E.A ESTEEMED ENTERPRISES

was very enlightening. The practical skills we were enlightened to and the opportunity to relate

with typical situations concerning computer operations. These experiences have successfully

improved my understanding and interest in computer operations as a profession.

The training was worthwhile, has it accorded me the privilege of gaining insight into job

preparation as well as what it meant to carry out proper inspection and also working condition

under stress which in a way prepares undergraduates for the outside world after school.

The program gave me a special advantage to relate with senior professionals and other

students from different institutions and this experience made me appreciate the nature, benefits,

and complexity of my chosen field of study in relation to computer usage both in the classroom

and in the society at large while also gives me the opportunity to put into practice the theoretical

knowledge acquired throughout my stay in school. The program has given me the advantage of

gaining practical knowledge and enlightened my knowledge about the application of computer in

my course of study.

13
4.2 Recommendation

Based on the experience and knowledge acquired at the course of the SIWES training, I hereby

give the following recommendation based on my observations:

i. Proper orientation should be given to the students by the institution before they go on
SIWES at least before mid-semester break of the first semester.
ii. The placement letter should be given to students early enough so as to avoid attachment
in irrelevant organization.
iii. Student should avoid prioritizing money over work and experience and should develop a
good attitude, good work ethics and be a good ambassador of the institution they are
representing.
iv. Institution and ITF should ensure that students are attached at relevant establishment for
effective training, experience and exposure related to their course of study in the
institution.
v. Proper supervision of SIWES students should be ensured so that the purpose of the
program will be achieved.
