Definition of the main terms

Assessment refers to the various methods or tools that educators use to evaluate, measure, and
document the academic readiness, learning progress, skill acquisition, or educational needs of
students.

Examples of assessments include:

 Discussion observation/ presentations.
 Exams.
 Papers.
 Reflection questions.
 In-class student responses.

Competence; in the education system, it refers to the ability of students to demonstrate mastery
of a specific skill or knowledge. For example; having a skill and being able to perform it
successfully or efficiently, and this involves describing a person as; being able to do something in
relation to the program content, and doing it well in relation to learner evaluation.

Based; this means “founded upon or built upon”.

Therefore, competency-based means the program is built upon the learner doing something that
are observable.

Part a)

Continuous assessment- this involves keeping records of learner’s performance in nearly by

everything they do during the learning process.

Or

Is the way of recording learners levels of achievement of learning tasks without using
examinations?

Competence based assessment; refers to an approach to education that emphasizes the

acquisition of specific skills and knowledge rather than the accumulation of credit hours or time
spent in classroom. For example, students are evaluated based on their ability to demonstrate

mastery of specific competencies, rather than on their performance on traditional tests or
assignments. That is to say; reading skills in a foreign language

Part b)

Characteristics of continuous assessment

1. Cummulative-it takes into account previous performance of students.
2. Guidance oriented-it is designed to direct and improve teaching learning practice.
3. Diagnostic-it helps to identify the strength of the students.
4. Formative- it provides feedback to the students to improve their performance.
5. Comprehensive- it takes into considerations all the domains of behaviors and learning for
example cognitive domain, affective domain and psychomotor domain.
6. Evidence based-because of evaluation and recording.
7. It is regular assessment of the learning performance related to a course and accompanied
by regular feedback.
8. Can take part within different parts of contact moments. For example; during workshops,
practical’s, lectures and projects.
9. Designed and produced by the classroom teacher.
10. It should meet the criteria for a good test for example valid and reliable.
11. It is periodical, well planned and systematic.
12. It can be in any form i.e., oral, written, practical, announced or un announced.
13. It is a series of assessment.
14. Binary assessment- between teacher and learner.
15. It meets the need of an individual.
16. It has defined roles.
17. It is a supervisory assessment.

Characteristics of competence based assessment

1. It starts with well-defined learning outcomes. The structure comes from creating, managing
and aligning sets of competence of learning resources, assessment, with an analytical
performance.
2. It defines roles
3. It is self-assessment

3
4. Supervisory assessment
5. There is continued learning and competence development
6. It provides feedback.
7. The practices adjust to meet the needs of the learners.

Part c)
Advantages of continuous assessment
1. It provides feedback on learner’s achievements
2. It aids diagnosis of faults in the teaching /learning process
3. It reveals readiness for progression
4. It acts as a source of motivation to learners
5. It provides performance indicators for learners, teachers and tutors.
6. It guides grading and classification
7. It returns a higher success rate of the training program
8. It helps to generate option, choice and selection
9. It provides a basis to evaluate instructional materials.
10. It offers monitoring and guidance and counselling services
11. Its acts as a teaching and learning activity
12. It is a guiding tool for the curriculum review and development
13. Helps to prepare for final or annual evaluation.
14. Promotes self-evaluation and improvement of habits and methods.

Disadvantages of continuous assessment

1. Greater study pressure pushing students off to the edge.
2. Inability of the system to strike a balance between pressure and pleasure of learning.
3. Lack of experience in the field can lead to a deviated assessment system
4. Loss of teaching time
5. Student’s stress
6. Leads to not assessing the right materials.
