ABSTRACT

This study seeks to assess the quality of paper egg trays as an alternative
thermal insulator focusing on their effectiveness as a sustainable solution for
thermal management in various applications. The rising demand for energy-
efficient materials has prompted researchers to explore eco-friendly options, and
paper-based insulation has emerged as a potential candidate due to its
renewable and recyclable nature. The research methodology involves a
comprehensive evaluation of key performance parameters: thermal conductivity,
heat reflectivity, convenience, and durability, associated with thermal insulators.
The study utilized a comprehensive approach to evaluate the quality of paper
egg trays as an alternative thermal insulator. The thermal conductivity test, heat
reflectivity test, survey/questionnaire, and visual assessment methodologies
provided valuable data that was analyzed using descriptive statistics to
summarize the performance, and convenience of the insulation samples.

CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

The evaluation of Thermal Insulation quality is of utmost importance due

to its widespread use in various industries, particularly in building and
construction. This evaluation aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of
the performance and suitability of Recycled Paper Egg Tray Thermal Insulation in
real-world applications. Globally, the residential park consumes about 50% of the
energy produced. The current design of energy-efficient buildings focuses on
reducing energy consumption in all phases of their lifecycle from construction to
demolition. In this context, thermal insulating materials are key, since they reduce
energy consumption in the operational stage of buildings, providing greater
comfort to their users.

Today, the increase in consumer awareness has started to direct people

to use natural or recycled materials, which has increased the search for these
materials for many sectors such as insulation materials (Islam & Bhat, 2019).
After reading various literature and studies on Thermal Insulation Connor (2019);
Polyexcel (2020); Dev360 (2022), the researchers found an apparent empirical
gap in the quality of egg tray thermal insulation in terms of thermal conductivity,
heat reflectivity, convenience, and durability. This research gap deserves to be
addressed to provide a thorough assessment of Egg Tray Thermal Insulation's
performance in terms of thermal conductivity, heat reflectivity, convenience, and
durability. Such research will enable stakeholders in the construction industry to
make more informed decisions and select the most suitable egg tray insulation
products that meet their specific requirements and ensure long-term
effectiveness and user satisfaction.

The researchers became interested in the problem of recycled egg trays

as an alternative thermal insulator because it plays a crucial role in ensuring its
efficiency and purpose in various applications. The general objective of this study
is to assess egg tray thermal insulation in terms of thermal conductivity, heat

reflectivity, convenience, and durability. By conducting a comprehensive
evaluation, the study aims to provide valuable insights into the thermal
conductivity, heat reflectivity, convenience, and durability of egg tray thermal
insulation. The evaluation of egg tray thermal quality holds significant importance
for various stakeholders in the construction and insulation industries. The
findings of this study will have the following general significance: Philippine
Economy, Environmental Agencies, Engineers, Citizens, and Future
Researchers.

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study is to test the quality of recycled paper egg trays
as an alternative thermal insulator. Specifically, the researchers aim to answer
the following questions;

1. What is the quality of the invented egg tray thermal insulator?

1.1. Thermal Conductivity

1.2. Heat Reflectivity

1.3. Convenience

1.4. Durability

2. What is the quality of the commercial thermal insulator?

2.1. Thermal Conductivity

2.2. Heat Reflectivity

2.3. Convenience

2.4. Durability

3. Is there a significant difference between the invented egg tray thermal

insulator and commercial thermal insulator?

Hypothesis

There is no significant difference in the quality between the invented egg

tray thermal insulator and the commercial thermal insulator.

Scope and Delimitation

This study focuses on the identification of the significant difference in the

quality between invented egg tray thermal insulators and commercial thermal
insulators. Egg Tray Thermal Insulators will be measured through the following
parameters: thermal conductivity, heat reflectivity, convenience, and durability.
The confounding variables that will be experimentally controlled are insulation
thickness, installation quality, and insulation material composition. On the other
hand, the extraneous variables that will not be considered in the study are
environmental conditions, testing duration, and user perception. These
extraneous variables can be the basis for improvement in the case that future
studies will decide to replicate this one.

The study will be conducted from January 1, 2024, to April 31, 2020, tentatively
4 months. A Test and Observations, Modified Observation Checklist served as
the main instrument of the study.

Significance of the Study

The results of this study will be beneficial to the following:

Philippine Economy. Thermal modernization is viewed by its users in the

Philippines mainly in terms of economic benefits. Nevertheless, it does not
reduce the significant role of thermal modernization in lowering the environmental
impact at the phase of building use. The paper presents economic and
environmental benefits.

Environmental Agencies. The highest values of environmental benefits

were obtained for the variant of the coldest climate, which is obvious, but also for
the variant, in which the building before thermal insulation has the worst thermal
insulation, the least environmentally friendly type of heat source, and the most
eco-friendly insulation material applied.

Engineers. The engineers will benefit from this new innovation because
they can use it as an alternative to expensive heat insulators that they use in
many houses. They can have assurance that this product will also function
normally like the traditional heat insulators.

Citizens. Careful and equal heat distribution between rooms and surfaces
slightly enhances the comfort you may be yearning for, provided the Insulation
has been laid out correctly.

Future Researchers. This study may serve as a reference for future

researchers who are willing to pursue or improve the research about evaluating
the quality of paper thermal insulation.
