03: THE TWO TEMPLES

WHAT IS A TEMPLE?
“A building hallowed by the special presence of God, and consecrated to his worship
(Gen. 28:18 – 22). The distinctive idea of a temple, contrasted with all other buildings, is
that it is the dwelling-place of a deity; and every heathen temple had its idol, but the true
and living God dwelt "between the cherubim" in the Holy of Holies at Jerusalem.”
American Tract Society Dictionary

It is figuratively applied to symbolize

1. the church of Yahshua (John 2:20 – 21, 2 Thess. 2:4; Rev. 3:12)
2. heaven (Ps. 11:4; Rev. 7:15)
3. the body or soul of the believer, in which the Holy Spirit dwells (1 Cor. 3:16,17;
6:19; 2 Cor. 6:16).

THE TABERNACLE
A tent, booth, pavilion, or temporary dwelling.
Yahweh Commanded Moses to build a tabernacle for Him.

Exd. 25:1 - 9 … let them make me a sanctuary (Exd. 29:45)

Exd. 36:1 – 4 … they used the best of everything for the tabernacle construction

As Israel settled permanently, they also exchange their movable sanctuary or

tabernacle for a temple.

THE FIRST TEMPLE

1. David plans to build a temple: 2 Samuel 7:1 – 2, 12 – 13
2. David and Israel prepared for building the temple: 1 Chron. 22:1 – 8; 29:1 – 9
3. The Temple was built on Mount Moriah: 2 Chron. 3:1, (Abraham was about to offer
up Isaac, Gen. 22:1 – 2 and David interceded for Israel, 2 Sam. 24:16 – 25)
4. Everything was made of pure gold: 2 Chron. 4:19 – 20

DESCRIPTION:
2 Chron. 3:1 – 17 to 2 Chron. 4:1 – 22
The Temple itself was seventy cubits long; the Porch being ten cubits (17.5ft), 1 Kings 6:3,
the Holy place forty cubits (70ft), 1 Kings 6:17, and the Most Holy place, twenty cubits
(35ft), 2 Chron. 3:8. The width of the Porch, Holy, and Most Holy places was thirty cubits, 1
Kings 6:2; but the height of the porch was much greater, being no less than one hundred and
twenty cubits, 2 Chron. 3:4, or four times the height of the rest of the building. The Most
Holy place was separated from the Sanctuary by an impervious veil, Luke 23:45, and was
perhaps wholly dark, 1 King 8:12, but for the glory of the Lord which filled it.

years before the birth of Yahshua and until Yahshua was 30 years (See John 2:20)
