NURSE-PATIENT INTERACTION (NPI)

I. DESCRIPTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT:


On April 25, 2023, the student nurse and the patient interaction took place in
A.P. Dela Cerna’s function hall. It was a hot sunny day. Surrounded with houses with
a variety of trees, the roof the facility can be seen where clothes of the residents are
put to be dried after laundry. Random conversations could be heard as the interaction
happened during snack time but we’ve maintained enough distance to focus on our
own conversation. The patient was seated on our right side with a comfortable space
between us.

II. DESCRIPTION OF PATIENT’S PHYSICAL APPEARANCE AND


CHARACTERISTICS:
The patient was wearing a dark green jersey with his name on its back as well
as black shorts, he wore black slippers, and his gait was fine, patient was not slow in
moving. Patient had appropriate affect and can usually answer certain questions
asked. Unless the nursing student approach him first, he wouldn’t interact with them.

III. GOAL OF INTERACTION:


To allow patient express his emotions and current needs to establish rapport.

V. ANALYSIS
Patient Ed seemed to be silent when not asked. He answered the questions with no
hesitation, and only answers in few and also the voice he’s using is low and student
nurses needs to be closer to hear him. He seemed to be relaxed but tend to stare at a
distance sometimes and the student would repeat the question for him to answer. He
was also able to access his remote memories. He was also asked if he had enough
sleep, which he did.

VI. EVALUATION
Student nurse and patient interaction was successful as the students was able to
establish rapport. This is shown because the patient didn’t show any hesitation to
answer but only showed a brief moment of poverty of thought.
