Deputy Head of Modern Foreign Languages (Spanish with French)


TLR 2.2 (£4,783)
Full time from September 2022.

We are recruiting for a Deputy Head of MFL to work closely with our Head of MFL in a large, vibrant and very
ambitious department. The successful candidate would have the ability to deliver Spanish to KS5 and French to
KS3. This is a very exciting opportunity to lead, develop and play a significant role within the forward development of
the Modern Foreign Languages Department. Further details about the role can be found later in this pack.

The Post
The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate leadership skills, highly effective communication skills and ex-
cellent organisational skills. The role is a perfect platform to develop your own career towards a Head of Department
role, and beyond. We will invest in you.
The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate experience of consistently effective teaching and learning, and
a willingness to contribute to the whole staff team. Flexibility and the ability to innovate are desirable qualities, along
with energy and capacity for hard work! The successful candidate will have a good understanding of what effective
Teaching & Learning looks like for children at all stages of their own development and be committed to enabling all
students to access the curriculum in order to fulfil their academic potential.

Languages at Cleeve
Languages are highly valued at Cleeve and there is a keen interest by the Executive Head and Board of Trustees to
continue to increase student uptake of the EBacc and develop international links and events across the curriculum.
Our vision is to become a centre of excellence for modern foreign languages and this role will contribute significantly.
Outcomes in MFL have significantly improved over the years and the department goes from strength to strength!
The department has an extremely well-resourced subject area, with attractive teaching rooms, an excellent range of
teaching resources, a great network with local schools and businesses and, crucially, outstanding Foreign Language
Assistants to support.

Deputy Head of Modern Foreign Languages


Teacher Main Scale or UPS. TLR 2.2 (£4,783) full time from September 2022.
Accountable to: Head of Modern Foreign Languages
Accountable for: Would look to introduce line management responsibilities, based on experience of candidate.

KPIs for the role (metrics to be added for the School/ Department Improvement Plans and Performance
Management)
• Support the Head of Department in creating and maintaining an outstanding Modern Foreign Languages
Department.
• Specific areas of responsibility will be negotiated at interview and are subject to change. Regardless of specific
areas, to drive high quality and rigour within these, enabling the department and school to move from strength
to strength.
• Play a key role in creating an ethos of high ambition, collaboration and performance across the team and
department.
• Make a strong and sustained contribution to the teaching and learning of Spanish and French, and your
outcomes will demonstrate high-performance that can be role-modelled to others.
• Deputise for the Head of Department, as required.
• Make a positive contribution to the wider life and ethos of the school.

Key Responsibilities
As a languages teacher at Cleeve school you will deliver lessons in Spanish to A-Level and French at Key Stage 3.
There is further opportunity to teach French at Key Stage 4 dependent on candidate experience, which is desirable,
though not essential.

Leadership
• Oversee and co-ordinate areas of specific responsibility within the department.

• Assist the Head of Department in all aspects of Quality Assurance.

• Make a large contribution to the resourcing of the department.

• Make significant contribution to the development of assessments and assist in arrangements for exams.

• Enhance students’ academic performance through the analysis of performance data.

• Ensure progress is being made by students in all key ‘sub groups’ groups.

• Organise opportunities for students outside of the classroom.

• Be a role-model within the department - an excellent classroom practitioner, with a ‘can do’ attitude.

• Other tasks requested within the general/ expected Deputy Head of Department remit.

Teaching
• Fulfil all expectations as outlined in the Teacher Standards.

• Plan and teach lessons and sequences of lessons to the class(es) you are assigned to teach within the context
of the school’s plans, curriculum and schemes of work in order to achieve target levels of student attainment,
progress and outcomes.
• Assess, monitor, record and report on the learning needs, progress and achievements of students that you
teach.
• Ensure timely and formative feedback on student work.

• Participate in arrangements for preparing students for external examinations.

Health and Safety


• Promote the safety and wellbeing of students in accordance with the school’s Child Protection and other
relevant policies.
• Maintain good order and discipline among students in accordance with the school behaviour policy.

Communication
• To communicate with students, parents and carers in accordance with the school ethos, policies and practice.
• To liaise regularly with other members of the MFL Department and School Staff.
• To attend meetings as required.
• To lead meetings or briefings within the department as required.
• To liaise with external agencies as appropriate.

Professional development
• Participate in arrangements for the appraisal and review of your own performance and, where appropriate, that
of other teachers and support staff.
• Participate in arrangements for your own further training and professional development and, where
appropriate, that of other teachers and support staff including induction.
