3296 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

RECIRCULATION CIRCUIT
Liquid from the pump casing, volute "A", at the outer
diameter of the impeller enters the recirculation circuit to
provide cooling, lubrication and flushing of any entrained
solids. The flow pattern within the recirculation circuit is
shown in Figure 11.

Cooling and lubrication of the thrust, stationary sleeve and

rotating sleeve bearings is provided by the pumped liquid in
the recirculation circuit. The amount of pressure and flow
gradients are shown in Charts IX and X.

Cooling of the driven magnet assembly and containment

shell is also provided by the recirculation circuit. The
pressure in these areas, prevents flashing of the pumped
liquid and prevents pump cavitation.

A 50 mesh self-cleaning screen located in the frame adapter

prevents most solids from entering the recirculation circuit.
However some "fines" can enter the circuit and are returned
to the pump casing by pump-out vanes located at the
outboard side of the driven magnet assembly as shown in
Figure 11. The pressure developed by the pump-out vanes
provides the circulation to move the solids out of the
containment shell and also to ensure the circulation required
to cool the containment shell and driven magnet assembly.

The temperature of the pumped liquid in the recirculation

circuit will rise as a result of removing heat from the driven
magnet assembly and the containment shell. The
temperature rise is a function of the operating speed of the
pump, size of magnetic drive assembly, specific gravity and
specific heat of the pumped liquid. As an example when
pumping water at an operating speed of the 3500 RPM the
liquid temperature will increase between 7'F and 10T on an
average. For liquids that are temperature sensitive and are
limited to a maximum temperature rise, the temperature rise
in the recirculation circuit can be established based on the
magnetic drive size, specific gravity and specific heat of the
pumped liquid. If this determination does not meet the
maximum allowable temperature for the pumped liquid then
the pumped liquid is introduced externally, at "AA" Figure 11,
after having been cooled by a heat exchanger to maintain
the desired temperature within the recirculation circuit.

27
The temperature rise of the pumped liquid in the
redrcuiation circuit can be determined by use of these
formulas:

TflnmflP9,11M Qiea ,.P. 5.09 x Drive Losses HP*

Temperature Rise ( F) = Recirculallon gpm x SpGr. x SpHt.

Ta«™,a,at..,a dim m\ 0.86 x Drive Losses kW*

Temperature Rise ( C) = Recirculation m% x SpGr. x SpHt.

'These drive losses, are a function of the operating speed of

the pump, size of the magnetic drive and include thrust
bearings, stationary sleeve bearings, rotating sleeve
bearings and magnetic drive hysteresis losses.

Circulation within the redrcuiation circuit takes various paths

to provide reliability of the magnetic drive, containment shell
and bearing assemblies. The use of Figure 11, Chart IX and
Chart X, that show pressure and flow gradients aid in this
understanding.

* Total redrcuiation: A or AA to B

* Inboard bearing lubrication and cooling: B, C, D

* Thrust bearing and outboard bearing and lubrication: F, G

* Cooling and flushing: E, G, H

* Flushing: H, I, J

Pressure Temperature Limits

The 3296 has class 150 raised face flanges as standard

(class 300 raised face flanges optional). The maximum total
working pressure for a 3296 with class 150 or class 300
flanges is shown on chart XL The pump discharge pressure
should not exceed the total allowable working pressure at
the fluid temperature.

Hydraulic Requirements

The 3296 hydraulics are similar to the 3196. The system

hydraulic requirements define the pump size and impeller
diameter required for the application.

Solids and Viscosity Handling

The 3296 solids handling capability is a maximum 100

micron solid size up to 1.5% by weight. To handle solid
conditions that exceed these limits see the discussion on
external circulation plans in this section.

The 3296 will pump effectively, liquids with a viscosity up to

50 cps without pump power corrections. The viscous
handling capability can be extended to 100 cps by
performing a viscous correction to properly account for the
extra power requirements of handling viscous fluids. See
Example G of this section for viscous correction calculations.

Magnet Liquid Temperature Limits

The magnet liquid temperature limits are 250T (121 'C) and
425T (218'C) for NdFe and SmCo drives, respectively. The
appropriate magnets should be selected based on the fluid
temperature of the application. If NdFe magnets are
selected for a service where the liquid temperature exceeds
250T the NdFe magnetic drive will decouple and will not
transmit the necesary power to the driven pump shaft. In
the case of SmCo magnets used for a service in excess of
425'F the same result occurs. See the examples of this
section to gain further understanding of magnet selection
based on the temperature of the liquid being pumped.

Hydraulic Minimum Pump Flow

Hydraulic minimum flows are given on each CDS curve for a

particular 3296 pump size. A minimum flow must be
maintained to provide stable pump operation, cooling to the
magnets and containment shell, and lubrication to the
sleeve and thrust bearings. This minimum flow insures
against pump overheating and provides safe and reliable
performance.

50
APPUCATION GUIDELINES

Thermal Minimum Pump Flow

It is extremely important to recognize that for saturated liquid

applications (NPSHA = tank level - friction) or liquids that
have a rapid change in vapor pressure with temperature or
applications which require pumping liquids with a vapor
pressure greater that 35 to 40 psia, the hydraulic minimum
flows shown on the CDS curves may not be adequate to
prevent vaporization in the pump casing, (flashing will occur
after liquid passes through the clearance between the
impeller and casing) Vaporization in the pump will cause
operation malfunction such as pump vapor lock. In these
cases a minimum thermal flow must be calculated, which
will be larger than the pump's hydraulic flow shown on the
CDS curve. Maintaining a minimum thermal flow will
prevent vaporization in the 3296 for these applications. See
chart Xli & XIII and example F of this section for the
calculations required to determine thermal minimum flow.

APPUCATION GUIDEUNES

Recirculation Flow Through Magnet and Bearing Area

Recirculation flow is shown on each 3296 CDS curve for
each pump size. As liquid flows through the pump, the
recirculation flow is automatically established by the 3296
design. The recirculation flow is the flow that actually cools
the magnets and containment shell and lubricates the
sleeve and thrust bearings. Maintaining a minimum
hydraulic or thermal flow through the 3296 at all times
insures that the proper flow is maintained in the
recirculation circuit. Figure 11 illustrates the recirculation
flow through the the 3296.

Magnetic Drive Power and Motor Size Limits

Shown on each CDS curve for a particular 3296 pump size
are values for maximum drive power and maximum motor
size. These values define the power limits of the NdFe
(drives designated A, B, C,...) and SmCo (drives
designated AA, BB, CC,...) magnet limits. If the system
requires that the pump draw more power than the maximum
power of a particular drive size, the 3296 will decouple and
discontinue to move liquid. If the motor coupled to the pump
exceeds the maximum motor size for a particular drive size,
the high start-up torque generated by the motor will exceed
the capabilities of the drive. The 3296 will decouple and not
move liquid. See the examples in this section for further
explanation of maximum drive power and maximum motor
size.

Magnetic Drive and Motor Sizing

Each 3296 drive (NdFe drive A, B, C,... and SmCo drive
AA, BB, CC,...- see the CDS Curves) and accompanying
motor must be sized to handle the power requirements of
the application. Each drive size and type handles power
and motor sizes up to a specified maximum (see discussion
on magnet drive and motor size limits in this section). To
avoid 3296 operation problems, drives and motors must be
selected within these limits for each application. See the
examples in this section for procedures to select the
appropriate drive and motor size.

53
3296 Efficiency

The efficiency and power shown on the 3296 CDS curves

are based on the combined pump hydraulic power (BHP or
kW) and drive loss (HP or kW) at 1.0 specific gravity. The
pump hydraulic power (BHP or kW) will vary with the pump
rating while drive losses remain constant. Also, the actual
overall 3296 efficiency will vary with specific gravity as
follows:

Specific Gravity 3296 Efficiency

SpGr. = 1 Actual 3296 Efficiency = CDS Value

SpGr. > 1.0 Actual 3296 Efficiency > CDS Value
SpGr. < 1.0 Actual 3296 Efficiency < CDS Value

NOTE: The only exception to the efficiency variation

shown above is when viscous corrections are performed.
In all cases the actual 3296 efficiency will be less than
the CDS value when viscous corrections are made.

The reason the actual 3296 efficiency varies with specific

gravity is that the magnetic drive loss is not effected by the
specific gravity of the liquid. Therefore, the drive loss shown
on each 3296 CDS curve is not corrected for specific gravity
as is the pump hydraulic power. This situation results in the
variance of actual 3296 efficiency from the CDS values for
specific gravities other than 1.0 and requires different power
calculations than a 3196 to determine power (BHP or kW)
requirements for a 3296. See the examples in this section
to further understand how the 3296 efficiency varies with
specific gravity and to determine how to calculate the power
requirements when the specific gravity is not equal to 1.
The formula to calculate actual efficiency for the 3296 is
shown on the next page.

55
Temperature Rise

Inherent in the 3296 design is that heat is added to the

pumped liquid as it passes through the pump liquid end and
recirculation circuit. The heat addition can raise the liquid
temperature as much as 10 to 20T (6-11°C) under normal
operating conditions. See the Pump Selection section to
determine when to calculate temperature rise. Chart XIV
and XV give the formulas (English and Metric units) to
calculate temperature rise through the pump liquid end and
recirculation circuit. Example E of this section is an
application which requires the temperature rise to be
calculated for liquid traveling through a 3296.

APPUCATION GUIDELINES

Saturated and Volatile Liquids

When pumping saturated liquids, liquids that are at or near
their saturation temperature (boiling point), or liquids that
have a rapid change in vapor pressure with temperature
change (volatile liquids), it is necessary to calculate the
thermal minimum pump flow and check if the saturated
liquid will vaporize in the recirculation circuit. See Charts XII
and XIII and Example F of this section for the calculations
required to determine thermal flow and check for
vaporization in the circuit.

To insure reliable safe 3296 operation, liquid must not

vaporize in the recirculation circuit (heat generated in the
containment shell cannot be removed if vaporization occurs)
and a thermal minimum flow must be maintained. If the
thermal flow calculated is less than the hydraulic flow shown
on the 3296 CDS curves. The hydraulic minimum flow must
be maintained. If the situation is the reverse, then the
thermal minimum flow is the critical minimum flow that must
be maintained. If calculations show that the liquid will
vaporize in the recirculation circuit a heat exchanger can be
added to insure a successful application. Adding a plan
MD-22 to the 3296 will allow for proper cooling of the
recirculation liquid before entering the recirculation circuit
and preventing vaporization. For more information on the
plan MD-22 see the discussion on the external circulation
plans in this section.

59
Temperature Sensitive Liquids

Liquids that must be limited in temperature rise through the

pump should be evaluated to prevent characteristic
problems of the liquid associated with the temperature rise
(example - polymerization). See Charts XIV and XV and
example E of this section for methods to calculate
temperature rise through the 3296.

External Circulation Plans

The 3296 is equipped with an internal self-cleaning screen

as standard. The self-cleaning screen design prevents
clogging and insures clean liquid will be delivered to the
redrculation circuit. The 3296 design flexibility can also
accommodate external circulation plans for special
applications. Descriptions of each plan along with situations
where the plans should be considered are given below.

MD Plan 12 Recirculation from the pump discharge through an

external strainer to the frame adapter and to the
recirculation circuit.

Some applications require an external strainer for ease of

maintenance. It is easier to clean and unplug an external
strainer than the internal screen. To clean the internal
screen, the pump must be disassembled. An external
strainer can be cleaned without pump disassembly.

MD Plan 12 In applications where the majority of time the service is

clean, but during certain operation periods a abnormal
amount of solids may have to be passed and could plug the
internal screen, the MD-12 plan should be considered.

Ex. The liquid temperature is 260T but can be cooled to

below 250°F so NdFe drive can be used instead of a
more expensive SmCo drive (good to 425T).

Ex. To prevent vaporization in the recirculation circuit a

adapter (recirculation circuit) and liquid with solids back to
pump suction.

This plan can be used in applications where solid size and

concentrations exceed the 1.5 Wt% and 100 micron limits of
the 3296. The plan MD-31 allows the pump to handle
liquids with larger size particles at higher concentrations and
MD Plan 31 keep them out of the recirculation circuit.
MD-41 Recirculation from the pump discharge through a
cyclone separator to a cooler (heat exchanger) delivering clean
Supplied by customer cool liquid to the frame adapter (recirculation circuit) with
solids back to pump suction.

A Plan MD-41 would be used in the same situations as a

Plan MD-22 and MD-31. The difference is that the
MD Plan 41
application requires simultaneously the need for cooling and
cyclone separation.

61
Fall Safe Devices
The various Fail Safe Devices available as options with the
pump provide the protection required to prevent or warn of
an impending pump failure due to a system malfunction.
The use of any of these Fail Safe Devices is a function of
the type of protection the user's system imposes on the
pump. A detailed description of each device is provided in
the Fail Safe Devices Section of the Handbook.

A thermocouple is provided as "standard" with each pump

and is used to sense the temperature of the containment
shell. An optional Temperature Controller is required to
provide a measurement of the containment shell
temperature and alarm and/or stop the pump due to an
overtemperature condition.

62
APPLICATION GUIDELINES

Pump Selection
The 3296 pump selection process requires that the system
hydraulic requirements, liquid properties, and pump
requirements are fully recognized. The use of the "Goulds
Pumps 3296 Data Sheet", "Liquid Data", and customer's
data will help in the proper 3296 size and drive selection.

The procedures used to select a 3296 pump size and

impeller diameter to meet a customer's hydraulic system
requirements are identical to the procedures used with
Goulds 3196 ANSI B73.1 chemical process pump or any
end suction centrifugal pump. However, the differences in
design between a 3296 magnetic drive pump and 3196
standard ANSI centrifugal pump require different procedures
to determine pump power requirements and motor size.
Also, when applying a 3296 it is absolutely necessary to
consider temperature rise, hydraulic and thermal minimum
flow, and liquid vaporization within the pump where with a
3196, in most cases, these are not considerations.

To summarize, the selection of a 3296 is similar to a 3196

with some additional considerations. They are as follows:
* Specific gravity and effects on power (BHP or kW)
and actual rated efficiency
* Temperature rise requirements
* Hydraulic minimum flow requirements
* Thermal minimum flow requirements
* Vaporization
These considerations are explained in more detail as follows:

Pump Selection Considerations

• When the specific gravity (SpGr) is greater than or less

than 1.0 the calculation to determine power (BHP or kW)
is different from that of the 3196.

• Inherent in the 3296 design is that heat is added to the

pumped liquid as it passes through the recirculation
circuit and pump liquid end. The heat addition can
increase the liquid temperature as much as 10-20'F
(6-11 *C) under normal operating conditions. The
increase in temperature can cause polymerization or
vaporization of the pumped liquid.

63
• The minimum flow through the pump must always be
equal to or greater than the hydraulic minimum flow
given on the CDS curves. This insures adequate
lubrication to the 3296's silicon carbide sleeve and thrust
bearings and cooling of the containment shell and
magnets.

• In most applications, the minimum thermal flow will be

less than the minimum hydraulic flow given on each
CDS curve. However, under the following conditions, the
minimum thermal flow must be calculated to avoid
operational problems such as pump vapor lock:
a. Vapor pressure of the liquid is greater than 35 to
40 psia.

b. The application is a saturated liquid service where

the NPSH available is equal to tank level above
the pump minus the friction
(NPSHA = Tank Level - Friction.)

c. Customer asks for the calculation.

• Heat is added to the liquid as it passes through the pump
and containment shell. Therefore, in certain situations,
the heat added to the liquid could cause the liquid to
vaporize in the containment shell, causing pump
operation problems. Under the following conditions, it is
necessary to determine if the liquid vaporizes in the
containment shell:
a. Vapor pressure of the liquid is greater than 35 to
40 psia.

b. The application is a saturated liquid service.

(NPSHA = Tank Level - Friction.)

c. Customer asks for the calculations.

The following is the "3296 Application Questionnaire". The

questionnaire will allow the user to provide all the required
information and ask critical liquid characteristic questions to
properly apply the 3296.

Reference the next section "3296 Application Examples" for

proper procedures and calculations to select an appropriate
3296 pump size, drive assembly, motor size, and external
hardware to meet customer's requirements in various
applications.

2. Does the minimum flow available exceed the hydraulic

minimum flow required? Required hydraulic minimum
flows are listed on each CDS curve.

The required hydraulic minimum flow must be

maintained to insure proper lubrication and cooling of
the 3296I

3. What are the liquid properties of the fluid being handled?

(Liquid properties can be customer obtained or from

the liquid data section of the magnetic drive handbookl)

vapor pressure
temperature
specific heat
specific gravity
viscosity (100 cps max.)
solid size (100 micron max.)
solid concentration (1.5% max.)
rate change of vapor pressure with temperature

4. Does the liquid contain magnetic particles? (ex. iron)

These type of particles could plug the critical

recirculation circuit)

5. Will the liquid polymerize or is it sensitive to temperature

rise? If yes, under what circumstances?

The temperature rise through the pump liquid end and

recirculation circuit will have to be calculated to insure
reliable 3296 operation!

6. Is the liquid in a saturated condition or have a vapor

pressure greater than 35 to 40 psia?

If yes, the minimum thermal flow, and temperature rise

through the pump and recirculation circuit must be

65
calculated. The concern is vaporization in the 3296,
which will effect pump operation. An external heat
exchanger may be required! An external circulation
plan MD-22.

7. Are the service conditions generally clean, but at times

require that abnormal amounts of solids be passed
through the 3296?

The abnormal solids could plug the internal screen

each time they're passed. The pump would have to be
disassembled to clean the internal screen. Using the
external circulation plan MD-12 would only require the
disassembly of one component in a bypass line. The
Y-type strainerl

8. Does the service have solid size and concentrations that

exceed what a 3296 with an internal screen can
handle? (1.5% and 100 micron)

Using an external recirculation plan MD-31 with a

cyclone separator will allow handling of solid size and
concentrations that exceed that of the 3296 with an
internal screen or external strainer.

9. Are the service conditions such that a plan MD-12 or

MD-31 cannot be used?

The 3296 is equipped with an external connection that

will accept piping furnished by the customer to supply
a clean external flush.

71
Example A (Calculations & Procedures)

Stepi Fill out the 3296 Pump Data Sheet with the customer
information, liquid characteristics, and service operating
conditions (See Example A data sheet).

Step 2 A class 150 flanged 3296 is good for 275 psi at 100'F
(assuming 316 construction is good). This is more than
enough allowable working pressure capability for this
application.

275 >>> 38.6 psia (23.9 psig)

Step 3 Based on the hydraulic requirements a 1x1.5-6 S 3296

is a good selection.

Step 4 3296 CDS curve 4371 describes the performance of a

1 x1.5-6 S A (NdFe) drive for the rating and this application.

Selected impeller diameter =

CDS Efficiency=24% Based on water at 1.0 SpGr.
NPSHR = 5.5 ft. < NPSHA = 15 ft.
Minimum Hydraulic Flow = 12 GPM

Step 5 No solids to handle, so solids handling is not a consideration.

Step 6 A viscosity correction is not required.

Step 7 Pumping temperature = 100'F. Therefore, a NdFe drive good

for 250T will handle this application.

Step 8 Compare the minimum hydraulic flow of the 32961x1.5-6 S

with the flow requirement specified by Evans.

80 GPM > 12 GPM

The rated flow exceeds the minimum hydraulic flow for this
size 3296 given on CDS curve 4371. Adequate lubrication
and cooling for the pump is insured.

Step 9 Thermal minimum flow is not a consideration for this

application (see the pump selection considerations).

Step 10 Since the specific gravity is equal to 1.0, the efficiency

on the CDS curve will be equal to the actual 3296 efficiency
in operation. The power can be calculated directly from the
CDS curve like a 3196.

72
APPLICATION GUIDEUNES

a. Calculate rated BHP

b. Compare the value calculated in step a. with the maximum

allowable drive power for an A (NdFe) Drive given on
CDS curve 4371.

5.89 < 13.4 BHP

Since the rated BHP required for this application is less

than the maximum allowable drive power for an A Drive.
An A Drive can be used for this application.

If the rated BHP exceeds the drive power capabilities of

the A (NdFe) Drive, a B (NdFe) Drive would have to be
used to handle the power requirements. A new CDS
curve would have to be used for a B Drive and the pump
power again determined (i.e. efficiency varies from an A
Drive to B Drive etc.).

Step 11 To select an appropriate motor for this water service,

determine the power (BHP) for a 45/8" impeller at runout
(non-overloading) using the same calculation shown
in Step 10.

^ = 6.48 BHP a, 1.0 SpG,

Therefore, a 7V& Hp motor would be selected for a
non-overloading condition.

Step 12 Compare the motor size and Hp selected with the

maximum motor size allowed with an A (NdFe) Drive given
on CDS curve 4371.

7V2Hp<15Hp

Since the motor size selected is less than the maximum

allowed motor size for the drive, an A Drive can be used.

Again, if the motor size selected exceeded the capabilities of

the A Drive, a B Drive would have to be selected.

Step 13 Determine materials of construction.

73
A 316 stainless steel class 150 3296 will give excellent
service life: Standard o-rings, NdFe magnets, internal
circulation, labyrinth outboard seal, and oil lube will meet
Evans' requirements for this pump service. See 3296 data
sheet for all construction details selected.

Summary

In Example A the pumped liquid (water with benzene)

had a SpGr. = 1.0 and as such the performance from the
CDS curve was used without modification. Temperature
rise or external circulation plans were not pump requirement
considerations.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

Example B (Calculations & Procedures)

Step 1 As with Example A fill out the 3296 Pump Data Sheet with
the customer information, liquid characteristics, and service
operating conditions.

Step 2 Check the maximum allowable working pressure of a class

150 flanged 3296 at 11O'F. The P-T Chart (Chart XI) shows
a 270 psig allowable working pressure (316 construction).

270 psig > 35.6 psia (20.9 psig)

This is more than adequate for the application.

Step 3 Based on the hydraulic requirements a 1 x1.5-6 S 3296

is a good selection.

Step 4 3296 CDS Curve 4371 describes the performance of

a 1x1.5-6 S A (NdFe) Drive for the rating and this application
(see CDS 4371 shown in Example A).

Selected Impeller Diameter = 4%".

CDS Efficiency = 24% Based on Water 1.0 SpGr.
NPSHR = 5.5 ft. < NPSHA = 15 ft.
Minimum Hydraulic Flow = 12 GPM

Step 5 No solids to handle, so solids handling is not a

consideration.

Step 6 A viscosity correction is not required.

Step 7 Pumping temperature = 110T. Therefore, selecting a

NdFe drive with a temperature range up to 250T would be
appropriate for this benzene pump.

Step 8 Compare the minimum hydraulic flow of the 3296

1 x1.5-6 S with the flow requirements specified by Dow.

80 GPM > 12 GPM

25 GPM > 12 GPM 3 hours/day

The rated and minimum available flow exceeds the

minimum hydraulic flow for this size 3296 given on CDS
Curve 4371. Adequate lubrication and cooling for the pump
is insured.

Step 9 Thermal minimum flow is not a consideration for this

application. A vapor pressure of 3.9 psia does not pose any

77
vaporization problems with the 3296 (see the "Pump
Selection Considerations").

Step 10 Since the specific gravity of benzene is not equal to

1.0, the efficiency on CDS Curve 4371 (curve is shown in
Example A) does not represent the actual 3296 pump
efficiency in operation. Therefore, the power (BHP or kW)
requirement cannot be calculated using the same
calculation used with a 3196 or any standard end suction
centrifugal pump (see the discussion on "3296 Efficiency"
and "Pump Selection Consideration" in this section). The
calculations to determine the power requirement and actual
operating efficiency for a 3296 when the specific gravity is
not equal to 1 and in this application follow:

a. For the benzene application calculate the rated power

(BHP or kW) as if the liquid had a specific gravity of 1.0.

" "»
b. Subtract the drive loss (given on CDS Curve 4371 for a
1 x1.5-6 S A Drive) to determine just the rated power
(BHP or kW) required to move a 1.0 SpGr. liquid through
the pump liquid end only.=

Pump Liquid End BHP = 5.89 - 3.35 = 2.54 BHP, 1.0 SpGr.

c. Determine the actual rated power (BHP or kW) required to

pump benzene by correcting the power (BHP or kW) in
Step b for specific gravity.

2.54 x .86 = 2.19 BHP, SpGr. 0.86

d. Add the drive loss to the value determined in Step c to

determine the total rated power (BHP or kW) for a 3296
1 x1.5-6 pumping benzene at the desired rating.

2.19 + 3.35 = 5.54 BHP, SpGr. 0.86

e. Compare the value calculated in Step d with the maximum

allowable drive power for an A (NdFe) Drive given on
CDS Curve 4371.

5.54 BHP < 13.4 BHP

78
APPLICATION GUIDELINES

Since the rated power (BHP or kW) required for this

benzene application is less than the maximum allowable
drive power for an A Drive, and A (NdFe) Drive can be
used for this application.

If the rated power (BHP or kW) exceeded the drive

capabilities of the A Drive, a B (NdFe) Drive would have
to be used to handle the power requirements. A new
CDS Curve would have to be used for a B Drive and the
pump power requirements again determined.

The calculated values of Steps a through d are shown in the

order that they were calculated on the 3296 data sheet.
Separate line items are provided to aide the user to
calculate properly 3296 power.

f. To determine the actual rated efficiency for a 1 x1.5-6 S

3296 pumping benzene use the efficiency formula shown
in the discussion on "3296 Efficiency" in this section.

Actual Efficiency (%) 8OxJ°^0-86

3296pumplng = ; 396\ x 100
Benzene SpGr. 0.86 f8"^™*™ - 3.35 ]x 0.86 + 3.35

Actual Efficiency = ^§§ x 100 = 22%

The value calculated in the denominator of the above

calculation is the value calculated in Step d above. To
summarize then, to calculate 3296 efficiency, hydraulic
power is divided by in the total power applied to the 3296
drive shaft.

To select an appropriate motor for this benzene service,

determine the power (BHP or kW) for a 4W impeller at
runout (non-overloading) using the calculations
demonstrated in Step 10.

20X230= 65 BHP«10
b. 6.5 - 3.35 = 3.15 BHP for pump, 1.0 SpGr.

c. 3.15 x .86 = 2.7 BHP for pump, .86 SpGr.

79
d. 2.7 x 3.35 = 6.1 Total BHP, .86 SpGr.

Therefore, a 7Vfe HP motor would be selected for a

non-overloading condition.

Step 12 Compare the motor size and HP selected with the

maximum motor sizes allowed with an A (NdFe) Drive given
on CDS Curve 4371.

7VfeHP<15HP

Since the motor size selected is less than the maximum

allowed motor size for the drive, an A Drive can be used.

Again, if the motor size selected exceeded the capabilities of

the A Drive, a B Drive would have to be selected.

Step 13 Determine materials of construction.

A 316 stainless steel class 150 3296 will give excellent

service life. Standard o-rings, NdFe magnets, internal
circulation, labyrinth seal, and oil lube will meet Dow's
requirements for the benzene service. Reference the 3296
Data Sheet for all construction details selected.

Summary

in Example B the benzene liquid being pumped had a SpGr.

= 0.86 and as such the calculations to determine power in
this situation were demonstrated. The actual efficiency was
calculated and shown to be 2 percentage points less than
CDS efficiency. Demonstrating the variation of 3296
efficiency with specific gravity. Temperature rise or external
circulation plans were not pump requirement considerations.

NOTE:
Examples A and B were written out in detail to demonstrate
and help the reader understand the logic in determining
3296 pump requirements such as size, motor sizes, etc.
Calculations covered in detail in examples A and B will be
streamlined in the following examples (Examples C, D, E, F,
and G). New calculations and procedures not previously
shown will be covered in detail.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

Step 13 Temperature Rise

This application requires that the maximum liquid

temperature through the pump recirculation circuit not
exceed 70T or a 20T rise based on a 50T pumped liquid
temperature.

Chart XIV shows the formula to calculate temperature rise

through the pump and recirculation circuit.

As liquid passes through the 3296, it's temperature will rise

due to inefficiencies in the pump liquid end and magnetic
drive end.

The heat load in the pump liquid end can be conservatively

estimated by determining the shut-off brake horsepower for
the impeller diameter selected (the reader could conduct a
thermodynamic analysis to verify that using shut-off brake
horsepower is an acceptable estimate).

The temperature rise through the 3296 pump liquid end is as

follows:

ATrR = 5.09(S.O. BHP)

1 ' Flow x SpGr. x SpHt.
5.09(5.3 BHP)
} 90 GPM x 0.9 x 0.46
The S.O. BHP is determined by drawing a line parallel to the
BHP lines drawn on CDS Curve 4371 until the line intersects
the first efficiency line where a BHP can be calculated [the
parallel line starting point is the shut-off point (zero flow) for
the impeller diameter selected]. For this example the
intersection point is 21 GPM at 104 ft. 10% efficiency (see
CDS Curve 4371). The S.O. BHP used in the above
calculation was calculated as follows:

_ 21 x 104x1.0 _ __
a' 3960x0.1 ~5'5
b. 5.5-3.35 = 2.2,1.0 SpGr.

c. 2.2 x.9 = 1.98, .9 SpGr.

d. 1.98 + 3.35 = 5.3 S.O. BHP, .9 SpGr.

95
The heat load for liquid that passes through the recirculation
circuit is the drive loss Hp (shown on CDS Curve 4371).

The temperature rise through the recirculation circuit is as

follows:

T/.FX _ 5.09 (Drive Loss)

^•"'"FlowxSpGr.xSpHt.

AT,.p> 5.09 (3.35 Hp) = ifiOT

K '" 2.58 GPM x 0.9 x 0.46 BTU/fbT
The recirculation flow used in the circuit temperature rise
calculation is the circulation flow to the pump out vanes passing
by the magnets as it returns to the casing. This flow is marked V
on Chart X. Using this flow in the calculation will always give the
worst case temperature rise in the recirculation circuit. The total
flow through the recirculation circuit is 3 GPM as shown on CDS
curve 4371. Using Chart X the recirculation flow passing by the
magnets is 3 GPM x 0.86 = 2.58 GPM.

The total temperature rise of the liquid that passes through

the recirculation circuit is as follows:

AT Total Recirc. =AT pump + AT Recirc.

AT Total Recirc. = 0.72 + 16.0 = 16.7T

The total temperature rise through the recirculation circuit

and the pump is less than the 20T allowable.

Therefore, a 1 x 1.5-6 A (NdFe) Drive meets the customers

allowable temperature rise requirements.

Step 14 Materials of construction-see Example E 3296 Data Sheet.

Summary

Example E demonstrated how to calculate temperature rise

through a 3296. The liquid passing through the pump will rise
the greatest in temperature as it passes through the
recirculation circuit. Temperature rise through the liquid end in
most applications is insignificant.

5.09 (S.O. BHP)

N0W"ATxSpGr.xSpHt.
The S.O. BHP is determined as shown in Example ' for the
4V6 inch impeller diameter selected. The S.O. BHP is an
estimate of the heat load in the pump liquid end which will
cause the temperature rise of liquid passing through this
part of the pump.

The S.O. BHP is calculated as follows:

a* 3960x0.10
b. 4.98 - 3.35 = 1.64,1.0 SpGr.

100

c. 1.64 x 1.49 = 2.4,1.49 SpGr.

d. 2.4 + 3.35 = 5.8 S.O. BHP, 1.49 SpGr.

The allowable temperature rise for the pumped liquid

(Chlorine) is the temperature increase which will cause
saturated chlorine in the feed tank at 35 psia and 10.4T to
vaporize when the system suction pressure is 40 psia. The
saturation temperature of 40 psia liquid chlorine is 18T.
Therefore, the allowable temperature increase is:

18-10.4T = 7.6T.

All variables in the thermal flow formula are now known.

The minimum thermal flow for a 3296 pumping chlorine in
this application is as follows:

Row=
The minimum thermal flow (11.33 GPM) is less than the
minimum hydraulic flow (12 GPM). Therefore, maintaining,
at a minimum at all times, the minimum hydraulic flow will
insure good 3296 operation in this chlorine application. If
the minimum thermal flow were greater than the minimum
hydraulic flow, the thermal flow is the flow that must be
maintained through the pump to insure safe and reliable
operation. In either case the 50 gpm process flow in this
application will insure proper cooling and lubrication of the
3296 magnetic drive.

101
Step 11 Non-overloading BHP = 8.05, select 10 Hp motor.

Step 12 10 Hp < 15 Hp, A Drive is o.k.

Step 13 Calculate temperature rise through the pump liquid end and
recirculation circuit.

As shown in Example E the temperature rise through the

pump and recirculation circuit are calculated as follows:

5.09 x5.8 Hp ,-.c

= 1-7 F

=19-3> F
The temperature rise through the circuit calculated above
represents the worst case for the majority of the liquid that
passes through the recirculation circuit (represented by point
J on figure 11). However, the temperature rise through the
front sleeve bearings must also be calculated because it is a
point where pressure drop is significant and vaporization
can occur (represented by point D on figure 11). Later in
this example a vaporization check will be done for this point
in the pump.

The temperature rise through the front bearing is as follows:

A_f , , . . 5.09x .2Hp 71.P

AT front sleeve bearing^ QpM x 1 4g x ^ BTU/fb.F = 7.1 F

Step 14 Determine the temperatures at the locations in the 3296 to be

checked for possible vaporization.

The locations of most concern are points D and J as shown

on figure 11.

The temperature at point D (liquid through front bearing) is

as follows:

Temperature Point D = 10.4 +1.7 + 7.1 T = 19.2T

The temperature at point J (liquid passing magnets return to

casing) is as follows

Temperature Point J = 10.4 +1.7 +19.3T = 31.4T

102
APPLICATION GUIDEUNES

Step 15 Determine the recirculation liquid pressure at the

locations in the 3296 to be checked for possible vaporization.

Using chart IX the pressure at point D is as follows:

Pressure at D = 40 psia + f80^'49 jx .12 = 46 psia

Using chart IX the pressure at point J is as follows:

Pressure at J = 40 psia + f8^1/9!* -70 = 76 Psia

Step 16 Determine the vapor pressures at the temperature of
the liquid flowing through points D and J. (NOTE: Vapor
pressure data was provided by Occidental).

Td = 19.2T Vapor Pressure = 40 psia

Tj = 31.4T Vapor Pressure = 50 psia

Step 17 Check for vaporization at points D and J.

Pressure D = 46 psia > Vapor Pressure D = 40 psia, no

vaporization.

Pressure J = 76 psia > Vapor Pressure J = 50 psia, no

vaporization.

No vaporization occurs in the 3296. The 3296 will work well

in this chlorine application.

Step 18 Materials of construction-see Example F 3296 Data Sheet

Summary

Example F demonstrated how to calculate thermal minimum

flow and check for vaporization in a 3296. The superior
recirculation design of the 3296 will allow handling of high
vapor pressure liquids without additional equipment (Ex. heat
exchangers) in many applications.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

Example G demonstrated how to correct for viscosity when

applying a 3296. Only the pump hydraulic power needs to
be corrected for viscosity. The magnetic drive losses are
not affected.

109
Example H (Fail Safe Devices)
The following are situations of 3296 pumps and systems
that require Fail Safe Device protection.

Temperature Monitoring And Control

• Examples E and F are indicative of when it is important

to sense, monitor and control the temperature of the
containment shell. The temperature of the containment
shell is a reflection or result of the pumped liquid
temperature.

• A Thermocouple in combination with a Temperature

Controller is used to measure the temperature of the
containment shell. The Controller has an adjustable trip
point that can be set to react to the magnetic drive
maximum temperature, the liquid boiling point, the
solidification or polymerization temperature of the
pumped liquid. The Controller will alarm or shut the
pump off when the set temperature is exceeded but will
also alarm when the thermocouple is disconnected or
when electrical power to the Controller is interrupted.

No Flow, Magnetic Drive Decoupling and

Motor Overload Protection

• In the event of a low/no flow condition within the pump

and recirculation circuit due to a closed suction valve,
plugged liquid recirculation path, or cavitation due to
insufficient NPSHA; a Low Amp Relay can provide
protection for the pump.

• A Low Amp Relay measures the motor current level and

alarms or stops the pump motor when the current falls
below a pre-set level that would indicate an unloaded
(Magnetic Drive Decoupling) or dry running (no flow)
condition. The heaters in the motor starter protect
against a motor overload condition.

Containment Shell Leakage Detection

• Leakage detection between the containment shell and

the bearing frame yoke can be measured by a pressure
sensitive or liquid presence sensor. In each type when
connected to an alarm and/or control circuit, an alarm is
activated or the pump stopped if leakage occurs.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

Goulds Total Protection System

* In many installations of a pump in a user's system a

combination of fail safe devices can be required. The
Total Protection System combines many and most
options. A packaged compact monitor provides this
combination of Fail Safe options.

Total Protection System

* Protects against dry running

* Protects against magnetic drive decoupling

* Provides temperature control of the containment shell

* Protects against leakage through containment shell
* In addition, there are two extra user specified inputs
available that can be used for other fail safe devices
