Chapter 1

Problem and its Scope

Rationale

Nonverbal behavior is a behavior developed from varied elements which the students do it

through actions and body position or body language, as well as unspoken understandings any

presupposition, and cultural environmental condition that may affect any encounter between

people. Teachers are trying their very best to provide the most conducive environment of

learning. Parents as well, Discipline is needed to reach the goal of learning. This is necessary

especially to those misbehaving students inside the classroom. Dealing with these kinds of

students take some amount of time in teaching which in turn may affect the quality of learning

when students’ behavior goes off track, the teacher will then find some solutions to deal with

them.

As many studies revealed they used the idea of reinforcement than punishment as said in a

certain quotation by anonymous “don’t show them violence instead show them a true kindness ”

so that will make them cooperate without any forces involve. Start believing that expressing that

good will encourage students to do good things while punishment will discourage participation

in general. They not saying that they won't use punishment because that's not realistic but they

will try to use more of a reward system than something to discourage the students.

Students in the lower level are easy to deal with compared to those who are already in the

higher levels. Lower level students are easy to discipline because they are still in the age when

they can feel the anger of their teachers. Whereas, older students have some guts of doing

naughty and unpleasant things inside the classroom or in campus. Indeed, recent evidence

suggests that externalizing behavior in classrooms may have an impact that extends beyond the
2

misbehaving students own achievement. This is quite evident among high school students.

There are some cases that cause them not to graduate on time.

School problematic behavior originated from the concept of Leslie A. Scott. He said that

“Nonverbal behavior in school can be harmful to the individual student if it interferes with

learning , decreases the chance or graduating, or reduces the likelihood of entering or completing

post-high school education. Problematic behavior is also harmful to teachers and students if it

interrupts instruction and the normal functioning of classrooms. Last, Problematic behavior is

harmful to school if it creates an atmosphere of discomfort or fear or if administrators spend

disproportionate amounts of time dealing with discipline problems. ” Psychologically, this posits

that such situations are most likely the reasons why students perform low academically.

Furthermore, School or classroom problematic behavior can cause some troubles on both

teachers and students. Finding the reasons of problematic behavior students for doing such acts

may help the guidance office, if not completely eliminates, but at least reduce school

misbehavior.

Thus, the researcher decided to conduct a study regarding Nonverbal behavior as practiced

by selected Junior high School students in PLMNHS. Findings was basis of developing a

guidance plan which was address the determined what was the cause by doing Nonverbal

behavior.

Theoretical Framework

These theories have proven that this study is true, more believed by the readers and have

evidences.

This study was anchored from the environmentalist or social learning theory as cited by

Bandura. Environmentalist learning theory is the understanding that the child ’s environment

shapes learning and behavior. It is also thought that behavior and learning are reactions to the

environment. Psychologists such as Bandura and Rotter found through observational learning,

that the young child will observe and copy behaviors of others, leading to decision-making skills

and development.

Therefore, encourages families, schools, and educators to understand that the child develops

and learns new skills in reaction to items she finds around her.

Key theorist - William Ford theorized the behaviour management, stated that the students

need to have an awareness to their responsibility because in theis theory if the students didn't

know his/her responsibility so he/she will act according to his/her unmanaged behaviour, like for

instance, they do what they want to do or they don't think about what they are doing.

The Assistive Discipline Theory of Marlene Lee, stated that rules and behavior expectation

must be clearly stated and enforced. Teachers are never to threaten students but to promise fair

consequences for improper behavior. For this model to work, the teacher must use a firm voice

and constant eye contact. And also this model place responsibility for bad students behavior on

the teacher.
4

The theory of Luza Makcest which is Nonverbal Behavior Used by the Student as a

Negative Behavior, cited that when a student ’s show a behavior like cheating, lateness, Pushing

classmate are the problem to students which shown that students have no interesting in her/him

school. Beside they are doing it because they make their self by having or doing some of the

behavior problem. In addition, students must have awareness of the rules of the school, must

aware for the behavior that they are doing or show is good

Therefore, the researchers have gathered nonverbal behaviour which are from the theories

of Bandura, the environmentalist or social learning theory, William Ford, behaviour management

theory, and Marlene Lee, assistive discipline theory and associated with the theory of Luza

Mackest which is the negative behaviour and to the theory of K Bosworth which is the positive

behaviour.

Conceptual framework

The conceptual framework focused on the relation between the respondents profile and

types of Personality. How does profile of the respondents and personality affects the Nonverbal

behavior of the students.

Statement of the Problem

This study examined the Nonverbal behavior as practiced by selected Junior High School

Students in Pooni-Lomabao Memorial National High School.

1. What are the respondent profile in terms of:

1.1 Age

1.2 Grade Level

1.3 Gender

1.4. Grade Point Average

1.5 Types of personality possessed

2. What are the common Nonverbal behavior practiced of the Student?

2.1 Positive behavior

2.2 Negative behavior

3. What are the implication of Nonverbal behavior can drawn?

Significance of the study

The study will be beneficial to the following people:

Student- This study enable students to be aware on the Nonverbal behavior and to

developed their selves in terms of following rules or being obedient they can learn the

importance of being on appropriate behavior.

7

Parent- It help them to better understand why some of the students get higher or lower

when it comes to behavior they had in classroom, especially in the school.

Future researchers- The result of this study are reliable to the future setting and to produce

more appropriate solution, it can be a source or reference to the future researchers intending to

study, The Nonverbal Behavior as Practiced by selected Junior High School and to conduct this

study in another demographic and generation.

Scope and Limitation

This study is only examined the Nonverbal behavior that Practiced by the selected Junior

high school student in Pooni-lomabao Memorial National High School. The students that we

survey were they know more about our study which also they can experienced about our topic

Nonverbal behavior.

This study was conducted in Pooni-lomabao Memorial National High School. The

respondents of this study are selected Junior high school in Pooni-lomabao Memorial National

High School.

Definition of Terms

For the purpose of helping the readers in understanding, the following terms are defined:

Academic Performance. It is the result of education after series of hard work in studies which

can be determined by the results of examinations, quizzes, class standings and other school-

related activities during the previous two semesters of their enrollment.

8

Classroom misbehavior. It is defined as a) cutting class or being late and absenteeism;

b) leaving their seats; c) speaking out of turn or otherwise disrupting instruction; and

d)cheating . It is also termed indiscipline. ( Finn, Fish & Scott, 2008)

Absenteeism - the habit of not attending classes in consecutive or non-consecutive

times.

Cheating- trying to achieve something good by means of dishonesty like peeping

answers from seatmates or glancing at the subject notes during test activities.

Cutting class - not completing the subject schedule within the day; a student may attend

one or two subjects but not in others.

Leaving their seats - transferring from one seat to another or leaving their seats and

going out of the classroom during class hours.
