Altersheim

Muttersprache
Alexa has been living in Germany, in Cologne, for
two months. Today she's going to a regulars' table
with international people. There you can talk to
different people in many different languages.
When she comes into the restaurant there are
three people sitting at the table. They speak in
German. “Hello, who are you?” a young man asks
her. “I'm Alexa and I come from the USA. So my
native language is English, but I also speak a little
bit of German. And you?" The man who asked her
answers: "I'm Owe and I'm from Northern
Germany. So my native language is German. But I
also speak English and Italian.” Next, a pretty
young woman with dark hair and dark eyes
answers: “I’m from Cologne. My mother tongue is
not German, but Arabic. My parents are from
Egypt and always spoke Arabic with me at home.
But I speak German as well as Arabic.” The third
person at the table is a man who is around 35
years old. He laughs all over his face. “I don’t even
know what my native language is.” Alexa doesn’t
understand that. “My mom is from England and my
dad is from India. I always spoke Indian and English
as a child. Actually the same amount… but today
my English is better than my Indian. I use it more.
That's why I think my native language is English."
Alexa had never thought about what the exact
definition of a native language is, very interesting!
That evening she learns a lot of German and even
a bit of Arabic.
