There is an acute shortage of water in every part of the country. In villages women have to walk
miles together to bring a pitcher of water. In cities the condition is not good. Water is supplied for an
hour or so daily. What is a matter of concern is that most of this water is unclean and is unfit for
drinking.
We need to take steps at all levels to conserve water and improve its quality. We should not waste
a single drop of water. There should be a ban on washing cars and watering lawns in summer.
Harvesting of rain water should be made compulsory. Industries should not be allowed to let their
waste flow in water resources like streams, canals and rivers. If we take these steps seriously and
sincerely, we can hope to tide over the scarcity of water.
Two of my friends and I decided to have a boat ride in a nearby river. We all reached the place at
about 8 in the morning. The weather was pleasant. There were fluffy clouds in the sky. Birds were
out chirping. We hired a boat and oared it to a distant, small island. We had a very good time. We
narrated jokes and sang. Then we started our ride back. No sooner had we started than we noticed
that the level of water was up and was, in fact rising. Suddenly a huge wave of water came. Our boat
shuddered and was unstable. We tried to make it move smoothly to the shore. We could see one or
two boats of fishermen at a distance. Then our boat stooped too much to the left. Water gushed into
it and soon it collapsed. We were in the water yelling for help. There seemed to be no hope at that
quarter. I was feeling suffocated. I tried to swim as much I was capable of. Then I saw a boat rushing
towards us. We were rescued by some fishermen and brought to the shore. We thanked God for
saving our lives.

Ans. 11. Bep, while washing, told Mother and Mrs van Daan how discouraged she felt and wanted to know
what they offered her. Mother was as usual tactless and made the things go from bad to worse. She
offered her advice that she should think about the other people in the world who were suffering.
Anne could not help saying how thinking about the misery of other could help if one was miserable
onself. Mother and Mrs and van Daan asked her to keep out of conversation of this sort.
Anne could not help thinking that the grown-ups were really idiots. She felt that neither her mother
nor Mrs van Daan understood the feelings of others. Anne felt she could have said something to
comfort Bep. But he could not, as Father came and pushed her roughly aside. They were all so
stupid, Anne thought again.
Or
Margot Frank, despite her physical beauty and mental intelligence, remains subdued. She is Annes
sister and shares many of her traits. Earlier, she gives the impression of being haughty, but she
shows signs of maturity, too. Like Anne, she is now quite sober, calm and quiet. She has become to
like Anne more and more, and understands her better than she did a few months back.
She is both beautiful and intelligent. Like Anne, she reads a lot and keeps herself busy in learning
new things. Anne acknowledges her physical and mental superiority.
She is in love with Peter. When she finds that Anne and Peter have come emotionally close, she
quietly withdraws. She tells Anne that she is free to go ahead in her relationship with Peter. She
does not seem to be happy, but she knows the grim reality. She accepts her fate and does not make
any complaint to anyone.
Or
Helen learnt many things about benevolent nature. But one day she learnt that nature was not
always kind. One day, with the assistance of her teacher, Helen climbed a tree and sat on a comfortable
seat. It was so cool up there that Miss Sullivan proposed to have their luncheon there. Helen
promised to keep still while she went to the house to bring food. After some time a change passed
over the tree. Helen felt that there was no sunlight. An odour indicated the coming of a thunderstorm.
She was seized by a terror. Soon a strong wind sent forth a blast. The trees swayed and strained. The
small twigs snapped and fell about her fast. She crouched down in the fork of the tree. She thought
the tree and she herself would fall together. Suddenly her teacher seized her hand and helped her
down. She clung to her, trembling with joy to feel the earth under her feet once more.

Or
Miss Sullivan, Helens famous teacher, was herself blind once. However she regained her eyesight
and devoted her life to educating the blind. She remained Helens teacher and a life-long companion.
Helen was aware of the fact that she was an inseparable part of her life.
She was an extremely patient and hard working woman. She went with Helen everywhere. At every
school she spelled into her hand whatever the teacher said. She interpreted everything to her. It was
not an easy task. Even at college she attended classes with Helen and spelled the lectures into her
hand as rapidly as possible. As very few books required in the various courses were printed for the
blind, she had to labour hard. Her hands would never tire.
She was a selfless supporter. She rarely went on leave and stood by Helen like a solid rock. When
Helen was charged with plagiarism, it was she who investigated the matter and told the world how
Helen had committed a mistake unknowingly. She always encouraged her to go ahead and achieve
her dreams.
