The triumphal arch from Romania

The triumphal arch from Romania is situated in the capital,Bucharest. The monument was
projected by Petre Antonescu and it was built in 1921 and finished in 1922. It represents
Romania s participation in the First World War.

The building has a height of 27 meters and it has only one opening on both sides.The
first,wooden,triumphal arch was built hurriedly after Romania gained its independence in
1878,so that the victorious troops could march under it. The arch s exterior,which had seriously
decayed,was replaced in 1935 by then current much more modern design,more closely
modelled in the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. The new arch,also designed by Petre Antonescu and
executed in stone ,was inaugurated on 1 December in 1936.

The sculpture with which the facades are decorated were created by famous Romanian
sculptors such as Ion Jalea and Dimitrie Paciura.
