Internet Safety

Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to:
• Define “online safety”.

• Recognize potentially unsafe, dangerous, or risky online situations and

behaviors.

• Identify rules for avoiding unsafe, dangerous, or risky online situations

and behaviors.
The Internet can be a wonderful place to learn, play
games, and talk to your friends.

But, the internet also has many dangers.

“Online safety” also known as “Internet safety”, refers
to the act of staying SAFE online.

Being safe online is when you take smart decisions to

protect yourself from online harms and risks.
Internet Harms
Internet harms include:

1- Violation of privacy

2- Unsafe communication

3- Exposure to bad content

This does not mean you will encounter all these threats.
But knowing about the risks will help you stay safe.
How can you use the Internet in a
safe and responsible way while
still having fun?
1- Never share personal information online.
Personal information includes full name, home address,
current location, phone number, school name, parent’s
name.
2- Never respond to emails or messages from strangers.
Strangers are people we don’t know. Some strangers may want to hurt us, but not
all strangers are bad people. So, it is always better not to answer any message or
email from somebody we do not know.
Stranger Danger
Same rules apply everywhere:

On the street: Say “No”, Run, Tell a trusted person.

At home: Do not open the door to strangers.
On the internet: Do not answer a message from a stranger
(someone you do not know). Tell your parent if a stranger
tries to talk to you.
3- Never post or send photos online without parental
consent.
When you want to send a picture to your friends or relatives, remember that it is
still possible for it to get into the wrong hands. Generally, you should only post
something online if you are comfortable with everyone in the world seeing it. Always
refer to your parents before posting any picture online or sending it to your
relatives and friends.
4- Never share your password with anyone except
your parents.
5- Never install applications on your phone or laptop
without your parent’s approval and supervision.
6- Never agree to meet face-to-face with someone
you have met online.
Making new friends should not happen online. It should happen in school,
scout, afternoon activities… places that your parents are aware of and have
adults’ supervision.
Remember! Tell your parents if you see anything
that makes you feel uncomfortable or if any
communication or conversation makes you scared.
