FINAL EXAM- ELECTRICITY- MAGNETISM

Time 120 min. Students are NOT allowed to use any paper documents and electronics (smart
phone, laptop, tablet,…), except simple calculator+ 2 sheets of A4 paper with written formula.

1. The charge density ρv is given in a region of space (Fig.1): ρv= 50rce-rc (C/m3) (cylindrical
coordinates). Find the electric flux density vector D by applying Gauss’s Law to a cylinder of
length L, and radius r as shown in the Fig.1 (2 p.)?
Fig.1

2. The circuit shown in Fig. 2 uses two identical springs to support a 10-cm-long
horizontal wire with a mass of 20 g. In the absence of a magnetic field, the weight
of the wire causes the springs to stretch a distance of 0.2 cm each. When a
uniform magnetic field is turned on in the region containing the horizontal wire,
the springs are observed to stretch an additional 0.5 cm. What is the intensity of
the magnetic flux density B? The force equation for a spring is F= kd, where k is
the spring constant and d is the distance it has been stretched (2 p.).

3. A two-legged core is shown in Fig.3. The winding on the left leg of the core
(N1) has 400 turns, and the winding on the right (N2) has 300 turns. The coils
are wound in the directions shown in the figure. If the dimensions are as
shown, then what flux would be produced by currents i1 = 0.5 A and i2 = 0.75
A? Assume the magnetic permeability of the ferromagnetic core µc = 1000 µo
and constant (2 p.).

4. The loop shown in Fig. 4 moves away from a wire carrying a current
I1 = 10 (A) at a constant velocity u= 7.5ay (m/s).

a/. Find the magnetic flux Φ crossing the loop as a function of time t
(1 p.)?

b/. If R= 10 Ω and the direction of I2 is as defined in the figure, find

I2. Ignore the internal resistance of the loop (1 p.).

5. A total charge of Q= 160 nC is first separated into 4 equal point

charges spaced at 90o intervals around a circle of ro= 3 m radius (Fig.5).
a/. Find the absolute potential VP at a point P on the axis, zP= 5 m from
the circle plane (1 p.).

b/. What would be the potential VP, when Q is distributed into a

uniformly linear charge density around the circle (1 p.)?
