Mid Important Questions

Unit-III
1. In a normal distribution 31% of the items are under 45 and 8% are over
64. Find the mean and variance of the distribution.
2. Suppose the weighs of 800 male students are normally distributed with
mean µ = 140 pounds and standard deviation σ = 10 pounds. Find the
number of students whose weights are (i) between 138 and 148 pounds. (ii)
more than 152 pounds.
3. In a test on 2000 electrical bulbs, it was found that the life of a particular
make, was normally distributed with an average life of 2040 hrs and S.D of
40 hrs. Estimate number of bulbs likely to burn for (i) more than 2140 hrs.
(ii) between 1920 and 2080 hrs. (iii) less than 1960 hrs.
4.The marks obtained in mathematics by 1000 students is normally
distributed with mean 78% and standard deviation 11%. Determine
i. How many students got marks above 90%
ii. What was the highest mark obtained by the lowest 10% of the students
iii. Within what limits did the middle of 90% of the students lie.

Unit-IV:
1. A population consists of 5, 10, 14, 18, 13, 24. Consider all possible
samples of size two which can be drawn without replacement from this
population, find (i) Mean of the population. (ii) the standard deviation of the
population (iii) The mean of sampling distribution of means (iv) the standard
deviation of the sampling distribution of means.
2.For an F -distribution, find i) F0.05 with ν1 = 7 and ν2 = 15;
ii) F0.01 with ν1= 24 and ν2 = 19; iii) F0.95 with ν1= 19 and ν2 = 24;
iv) F0.99 with ν1= 28 and ν2 = 12.
3.Samples of size 2 are taken from the population 4,8,12,16,20,24 with
replacement. Find i) The mean of the population ii) The standard deviation of
the population iii) Mean of the sampling distribution of means iv) The
standard deviation of the sampling distribution of means
4.Determine 99% confidence interval for the mean of contents of soft drink
bottles if contents of 7 such soft drink bottles are 10.2, 10.4, 9.8, 10.0, 9.8,
10.2, 9.6 ml.
5.A random sample of size 81 was taken whose variance is 20.25 and mean
is 32. Construct 95% confidence interval.
Unit-V:
1.In a study conducted by the Department of Human Nutrition and Foods at
Virginia Tech, the following data were recorded on sorbic acid residuals, in
parts per million, in ham immediately after dipping in a sorbate solution and
after 60 days of storage:
Sorbic Acid residuals in Ham
Slice 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Before 224 270 400 444 590 660 1400 680
Storage
After 116 96 239 329 437 597 689 576
Storage
Assuming the populations to be normally distributed, Is there significant
evidence, at the 0.05 level of significance, to say that the length of storage
influences sorbic acid residual concentrations?
2.A sample of 26 machines given mean life of 90 hrs with s.d. 20 hrs. The
manufacturer claims that mean life of the machine was 100 hrs. Do the
claim is valid test at 5% level.
3.Two horses A and B were tested according to the time (in seconds) to run a
particular track with the following results.
A 28 30 32 33 33 29 34

B 29 30 30 24 27 29 --

Test whether the two horses have the same running capacity.
4. A random sample of 100 recorded deaths in the United States during the
past year showed an average life span of 71.8 years. Assuming a population
standard deviation of 8.9 years, does this seem to indicate that the mean life
span today is greater than 70 years? Use a 0.05 los.
5.Test the hypothesis that the average content of containers of a particular
lubricant is 10 liters if the contents of a random sample of 10 containers are
10.2, 9.7, 10.1, 10.3, 10.1, 9.8, 9.9, 10.4, 10.3, and 9.8 liters. Use a 0.01
level of significance and assume that the distribution of contents is normal.
