3. In a certain department there are 7 seniors whose average weight is 165 lbs., 9
juniors with and average weight of 160 lbs., 13 sophomores with an average
weight of 152 lbs. What is the average weight of 49 members of the department?

4. Suppose the following distribution is given:

Given that the mean of the distribution is 33 and the arbitrary mean is 35.
i. compute the mode and the median

in their classes, which consisted of 32, 25 and 17 students, respectively.
Determine the mean mark for all the classes?

6. If the mean annual incomes of agricultural and nonagricultural workers in a


certain country are $9,000 and $15,000, respectively, $12,000? when and how?

7. During four successive years, a home owner purchased oil for her furnace at
respective costs of 0.80,0.90, 1.05 and 1.25 birr per gallon. What was the average
cost of oil over the 4-years period?

8. Suppose that Mr. X pays 15 cents /kw- hr for his electricity and Mr. Y pays 20
cents/kw-hr if Mr. X consumed 50 kw hours while Mr. Y uses 120 kw-hr.

i. If Mr. X consumed 50 kw hrs and Mr Y uses 120 kw hrs., find the


average cost per kw hr.
ii. If Mr. X pays 10 birr while Mr. Y pays 15 birr at the indicated
rates, what is the average cost per kw-hr?

9. The price of a commodity increased by 5% from 1993 to 1999, by 8% from 1999


to 2000 and by 77% from 2000 to 2001. What was the average yearly price
increase?

10. A person purchased the following quantities of cement (kg)wityh rates shown at 4
stores:

The overall mean and standard deviation of marks for boys including the 20 failed were
39 and 10, respectively. The corresponding figures for girls including the 10 failed were
37 and 9. Find the mean and standard deviation of marks obtained by the 30 boys who
failed in the test. Find the respective values for girls.

14. The mean height of male workers is 70 inches and the standard deviation is 2.9
inches. The corresponding numbers for female workers are 64 inches and 2.3
inches. If the ration of male and female workers is 70.30 what is the mean and
standard deviation for male and female workers combined together? Whose heigts
are more variables?

15. From a normal distribution the following sample results were obtained:

28. The average cost of a certain type of grass seed is Birr 4.00. The standard
deviation is 0.1 Birr. Find the minimum percentage of data values which fall in
the 3.82 to 4.28 range.
