THE DAY IN MY LIFE

By S. Sankara Naarayanan
XI-A
It was one sunny day. I was enjoying my 9th grade holidays after my exams were completed. I was
informed that after two days that we were going to my hometown. We set off from our house at
morning 4 am. It was an eight-hour journey. During the first four hours I slept. After some time, the
car stopped suddenly. I hit my head on the front seat of the car and woke up. When I checked the
time on my phone it was 8:30 am. It was time for the breakfast. The car was stopped near a
restaurant. There were so many items to choose for the breakfast. It was so tasty that it was my best
food I ever had. After half an hour the journey continued. For the remaining three-hours I was
playing Minecraft on my phone. By 3 pm we reached our hometown(Mayavaram near Thanjavur).
There we were staying on my aunt’s house. I was very thirsty and hungry. First, they served us some
water. Then they served us lunch. There were no varieties. But there was only the one and one item,
it was curd rice with pickle. I was angry as well as happy. There was only one variety, but it tasted
more better than the restaurant food.

I spent the evening by playing with my younger brother and enquiring him about his studies. I was
astonished to hear that he studied in government school (By that time I considered government
school was meant for poor and for those who could not afford for better schooling). When I enquired
him about his 10th and 12th Board Examination scores, I was so surprised. He told he had scored
481/500 in his 10th grade and 1174/1200 in his 12th grade. That night I could not sleep well. There was
no AC. There the fan was spinning like it had no life. But the room was cooler and there were no
mosquitoes. It was air from the open fields. It was cooler than AC.

I was sweating although. It was because of my elder brother. His words were striking my mind again
and again. The statement he told me” I had less access to gadgets and other things because my
mother could not afford it at that that time. But I became an app developer now. But I see that you
have more access than me to gadgets and everything, but you are not using it in a proper and helpful
way. You are misusing it by playing games and other things rather than giving importance to your
studies. You should focus on studies rather than entertainment. Start working hard towards your aim
from now. Mark my words you will be a more respectable person in the society”. A thought came to
my mind “Why I can’t achieve it”.This thought almost collapsed my mind.

The next day we were leaving my aunt’s house. We waved hands at each other. It took us 8 hours
again to reach our house. This time I was neither watching YouTube or playing Minecraft in my
phone. There were was one thought that was collapsing my mind. It was about the comforts and my
brother. There was no AC and other comforts needed in life but they were happily living and they are
satisfied with what they had.And my brother had less access to gadgets. But he got good scores. But
me with all comforts and everything I am not able to score full marks although I had the potential.I
was able to score only 70% to 80% marks.

It was the day in my life I started studying for myself not for marks but for my future and my life. I
rather focused studies than entertainment. I also left playing games and used that time in learning
computer coding languages. As a result I was able to score 461/500 in my 10th grade Board
examination.
MORAL:

1. Live with what you have and don’t look for more comforts.
2. Use gadgets in a good way which will be helpful for you in your future.
