ENGLISH 105: ADVANCED COMPOSITION

Course Description: English 105 (Advanced Composition) introduces students to research methodology
and the art of persuasion and argumentation. Students will be focusing on how to write well-developed
argumentative essays. The course will help students to become very well versed in academic research and
referencing skills. In addition, students will be taught to critically read and analyze texts. Students will be
taught how to effectively present their research findings and will practice honing their presentation skills.

Course Objectives: The aim of the course is to enable students to understand, utilize and produce
academic writing effectively through a program of writing, reading, speaking, and undertaking and
presenting research.
To improve their reading, students will regularly read articles and essays, sharpening their
comprehension and analytic skills through discussions and assignments.
The primary focus in writing will be on persuasions and effective argumentation, and achieving
control of the writing process in its different stages- pre-writing, writing, and rewriting. The emphasis will
be on academic writing, particularly the essay for, and the qualities that make it successful.
Students should also get practice in speaking through class discussions and presentations so as to
be able to participate competently in class discussions and seminars.
‘ A major part of the course will deal with research: how to conduct, how to define a research
topic, how to find and use secondary material on the same, how to integrate primary and secondary
research, and how to present it in a substantive research paper as well as a formal spoken presentation.

Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the students are able to:

By the end of the course, students will be able to:


1. Learn the basic structure of an argumentative essay
2. Develop and write a well structure of an argumentative essay
3. Create strong pros, cons and refutation for argumentative essays
4. Learn about and identify different types of claims
5. Study and practice the Toulmin model of argumentation
6. Identify and write different types of supports in argumentation
7. Identify warrants in argumentative passages
8. Evaluate, critique and write a report on evaluation of different argument passages
9. Learn how to brainstorm and narrow down potential research topics
10. Grasp the basics of using different sources to gather information on various topics
11. Know about the basics of research and types of research
12. Become aware of the different steps in conducting a research
13. Learn how to draft, modify and resubmit research proposals
14. Become competent in using APA style for referencing
15. Become familiar with different types of questionnaires
16. Draft, modify and analyze survey questionnaires
17. Analyze survey questionnaire responses and create graphs and charts
18. Write detailed analysis of groups and charts
19. Use secondary sources to be incorporated in their research paper
20. Learn and write annotated bibliography for research paper
21. Create research paper outlines
22. Write a full-length research paper
23. Formally present a full-length research paper
24. Employ critical thinking in responding to various literary prompts
25. Write structured and coherent responses to various prompts through is of coherence, prompt
relevance, idea development, and correctness.

REQUIREMENTS:
 Examinations: there will be two major examinations during and at the end of the semester
testing reading, comprehension, argumentative academia writing analysis of arguments and
certain study, research and reference skills.
 Assignments: students will have to do a variety of assignments throughout the semester. These
will include writing essays, analyzing arguments, writing responses, and doing various
assignments relating to different aspects of reading, writing and research.
 Research Paper: The research paper is a critical and vital part of the course, and all students
have to complete and submit it in order to pass the course.
The course teacher will have to approve most of the states in researching and writing the paper,
and will impose other restrictions and requirements as necessary.
 Quizzes/ Class work: students will have to do several quizzes a short assignments or class work
on different aspects of research and writing over the course of the semester.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: According to NSU policy, if you have THREE consecutive absences, or
FIVE absences over the course of the semester, you will be automatically dropped form the course. You
should also come to class on time, every three late appearances will count as one absence.

PLAGIARISM: PLAGIRISM OF ANY KIND IS SERIOUS OFFENCE AND WILL BE PENALIZED


ACCORDINGLY. Remember also that incorrect or insufficient documentation in research papers is also
considered a kind of plagiarism.
