3. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
This course is an introduction to interest rates, financial intermediaries, and financial markets.
We will first cover the fundamentals of the financial system and interest rates. Then we will
consider the role of financial intermediaries and central banks. We will discuss monetary policy
and perspectives on money, banking, and financial markets.

The main topics will be covered as follows:

1. Introduction to the financial system;


2. Determination of interest rates, structures of interest rate;
3. Financial markets: stock, derivatives markets, and market efficiency
4. Operation and the management of banks and non-bank institutions;
5. Basics of monetary policy and the operation of central bank;

5. COURSE GOALS
The study of the financial system is about its operations and the principles of these
operations. This course is designed to cover major parts of the financial system including financial
markets, banks, and other financial institutions, interest rates, exchange rates, central bank, and
monetary policy. This course emphasizes the core competencies of written and spoken discourse,
and teamwork.

9. COURSE REQUIREMENTS & EXPECTATIONS
Assignment and Exam
There are 1 group project (2.500 words), 1 midterm, and 1 final exam. The final exam of 90
minutes accounts for 50% of the total grade. Students have permission to take the final exam when
they attend more than 80% of the total classes and submit projects in Turnitin class. The Midterm
and Final exams are closed-book exams, so students can not use textbooks or other printed
materials. However, students can use 5 A4 sheets of self-hand-written learning notes.
Late Assignments
All assignments are due by the date and time specified in the assignment. Late assignments will be
penalized 10% per calendar day (not merely per class period) beginning with the due date. After
three late days, acceptance of the assignment is at my discretion. No extensions, and no exceptions.
It is your responsibility to know the due dates and to plan accordingly.
Class Participation
Class participation points will be based on general common guides to assess class participation
governed by The Center.
Communication:
I encourage discussion with me. You can communicate during office hours, by email, or during in-
class discussions. You also are welcome to make separate appointments. I will be available after
class, but only for short questions. I also encourage feedback on the classes, lectures, teaching, and
reading material.
