What was most interesting to you in reviewing these resources?

- The most interesting thing to me about viewing these resources is learning about
the p53 gene. This can work in DNA damage and serves as a checkpoint in the
elimination or repair of cells with damaged DNA. This kills any abnormal cell or
stops the cell from growing.
- UV light, drugs that are used in the cliinic etc. will activate p53 and allow it to do
its thing.
- I think it’s very interesting that scientists are discovering new things that are able
to help others.
- Another thing that stood out to me was Dr.Lozano’s background. Her parents at
first had a different expectation for her growing up in a Mexican household.
Getting married and having kids. I know it’s not easy from personal experience.
But she continued her studies and continued what she loved. I love that she was
able to succeed and accomplish many goals in her life.
What did you learn from these resources about cancer?
- Proteins such as Mdm2 and Mdm4 block p53, making it faster for cancer to
develop in one's body.
- Mutations that enhance gene function , can later on grow/evolve into cancer.
- Someone who has p53 mutations will have multiple cancers in their life.
- P53 is also known as “ guardian of the genome”
What new questions do you have after reviewing these resources?
- Who first discovered the p53 gene?
- Who was the first person this gene/protien was used on?
- What is the cost and expenses for p52 therapy?
- Has this p53 gene worked, or giotten rid of cancer in someone completely ?

What do these resources tell you about the types of people that do science?
- These resources tell me that scientists do a lot of research and study to help
other people. Dr.Lozano, daughter of immigrants, went through a lot of schooling
and studies. Scientists come from all over the world. This tells me that although
language may be different it’s important for scientists to know and communicate.
Putting new information out into the world isn’t easy, especially when talking
about cancer or other dangerous diseases. It’s important for them to put out the
right information making sure nothing they put out is wrong or misleading. I think
this also helps build trust within scientists and the people who are receiving this
information. It’s not easy to explain, So scientist also have to find a way to
simplify new information.
