EXPERIMENT 1: EGG DROP CHALLENGE

OBJECTIVES MATERIALS
 Get your payload safely to the surface! Raw eggs
Design and build a lander that protects a raw Drinking straw
egg that’s dropped from up high. Newspaper
Pen or pencil
Paper
Tape
Scissors

INVESTIGATE
1. Gather all necessary materials: drinking straws, newspaper sheets, masking tape, and a raw
egg.
2. Start brainstorming different ideas for how to create a structure to protect the egg from
breaking when dropped from a high height. You might want to sketch out some ideas on
paper first.
3. Once you have an idea in mind, start building your structure. Use the drinking straws,
newspaper sheets, and masking tape to create a design that will cushion the egg and prevent
it from cracking when dropped.
4. Experiment with different techniques for attaching the straws and newspaper to the egg. For
example, you could try rolling the newspaper into tubes and using the straws to reinforce
the tubes, or you could try crumpling up the newspaper and using the straws to hold it in
place around the egg.
5. When you're ready, find a safe location to drop your structure from a high height. Make sure
you have permission from an adult and that there are no people or objects in the drop zone.
6. Drop your structure from the high height and observe whether or not the egg breaks. If it
stays intact, congratulations! You have successfully designed a structure that can protect an
egg from a fall. If it breaks, take notes on what went wrong and use that information to
improve your design for next time.
ANALYZE AND CONCLUDE
1. Did your design successfully protect the egg from breaking when dropped from a high height?
Why or why not?
