ASSESSMENT: PSYCHOLOGICAL SELF (36 points)

Answer the following:

A. Differentiate the following by giving your OWN specific examples that will characterize
yourself:

1. Self-concept vs. Self-schema

Self-concept is a set of beliefs that people have about themselves that are made out of
self-schemas, while self-schemas then are cognitive generalizations about yourself that are
gained from experiences. For example, I believe that I am a good cook, which is a self-concept.
On the other hand, I came up with the idea that I am a good cook because of the positive
feedbacks I’ve received from other people, which is an example of self-schema.

2. Ideal self vs. Ought self

Ideal self has the attributes that I would like to possess, while ought self has the
attributes that the people believe that I should possess. For example, I would like to be better
at writing poems, which is my ideal self, while for my ought self, other people believe that I
should learn basic survival skills more.

3. Self-esteem vs. Self-worth

Self-esteem is what we think, feel and believe about ourselves, while self-worth is how
we value ourselves. For example, I may have a lot of self-confidence ‘my their abilities but I
may suffer from low self-esteem and doubt my worth. However, when we are confident in
areas of our lives, it may help to increase our overall sense of esteem, allowing us to work on
both at the same time.

4. Social identity vs. Personal identity

Social identity has the traits that I share with a similar group member while personal
identity has the traits that are different from those around me. For example, me and my friends
are introverted in public places and we all like reading webtoons, which is my social identity,
while my personal identity is that I also listen to all kinds of music, no matter what the genre is
unlike my friends who usually listen to Filipino music only.

5. Self-consciousness vs. Self-awareness

A self-conscious person is consumed with their thoughts about themselves, while a self-
aware person understands how their mind works, the reason why they think and behave the
way they do. For example, when I am presenting something in public, it feels like everyone in
front of me is criticizing my work this is an example of self-consciousness while for self-
awareness, I eventually learned how to ignore my thoughts that people are scrutinizing me but
instead, they were paying their attention to me.

6. Self-efficacy vs. self-confidence

A person with self-efficacy believes that they can do a task after having knowledge on
what they are going to do for example, I believe that I can bake a cookie because of a tutorial
I’ve watched in YouTube. While a person with self-confidence believes that they can do a task
even though they have zero knowledge about it for example, I believe that I could solve a rubix
cube even though I don’t have any knowledge about it.

7. Self-actualization by Abraham Maslow vs. Self-actualization by Carl Rogers

Abraham Maslow’s self-actualization sees the functioning of persons in one's own self,
while Carle Rogers’ self-actualization emphasizes the need of the environment. Applying this to
myself, an example of Maslow’s self-actualization is I still cook even though I never made profit
for it but it fulfills and make myself happy that’s why I never gave up my hobby. While for
Rogers’ self-actualization, I always crack a joke when a situation is awkward just to break the ice
in people around me.

8. Attitude vs. Behavior

Attitude refers to the action of a person towards someone or something, while behavior
is the way a person acts when a certain situation happened. For example, I am introverted so
my attitude is that I am silient and just mind my own business so people found me evil-
tempered while my behavior is that I need to be more talkative and look more nice because of
the social event I’m in.

9. Soul vs. Spirit

The soul is a person’s existence that connects them to the world, while the spirit
connected a person to God. After death, my soul that has my consciousness will leave my body
and it is gone forever, while the spirit will go to an eternal journey either in heaven or hell.

Answer the following:

1. What is Psychological Healing?

Psychological healing is the confrontation of a person to its emotional blockage in order

to gain the natural state of undivided wholeness and nonjudgmental, unconditional acceptance
of our feelings is the basis of psychological healing.

2. How can pain be transformed into beauty? Give at least 5 different ways of transforming pain
into beauty. Explain your answer.

a. Create an art – with this, we can express what do we feel. It could be in form of music,
painting or even literature.

b. Reassembling the pieves in to a new one – when we feel something distressing, most
likely we may lost our sense of wholeness as if we had been disassembled so we should collect
the broken pieces inside our mind and connect them into a new version of ourselves.

c. Change the perception – when you come to an understanding that all things must end
whatsoever, everything will start to look beautiful. Even suffering and pain for instance.

d. Find for God – biblical records tell us that God is Love. If this is true we must assume
that love is the opposite of hate and anger. Our spiritual dept and how we apply it, motivates
and dictates how we respond to all situations. The battle of the storm is the pain. But looking
back we see the good things that came from it and the lesson learned.

e. Acceptance – when you are in pain, the normal reaction is to shy away from it. But if
you do the opposite and go towards it which takes both courage and strength, you will find
sanctuary. This is because by doing this you go beyond the difference between pain and
pleasure and thus overcome the pain.

3. Explain: “Behind every beautiful thing, there’s some kind of pain.” -Bob Dylan

At some point, you will come to realize living this life involves some amount of
necessary pain, pain isn't fun and what makes you beautiful is being happy and the only way to
be happy is by freeing yourself from the pain that's holding you captive. We may not realize it
but deep down we are more fragile then we think. There are some that can take pain over and
over again but it gets to the point where eventually they get drained and can't handle it
anymore.
