WHERE DOES METAL COME
FROM
GOLD : NATIVE (UNCOMBINED ELEMENT)
EXTRACTING METALS FROM THEIR ORES
IRON PYRITES (FeS2) MAGNETITE (Fe2O3)
ACTIVITY (SLIDE/PPT)
1. FIND ONE EXAMPLE OF METAL AND THE
ORE
2. EXPLAIN ABOUT EXTRACTING METAL
PROCESS (FOR ORE WHICH YOU FIND)
EXTRACTING THE METAL

Many ores contain either oxide or

compounds. To obtain the metal from the
oxide, you have to remove the oxygen.
Removal of oxygen is called reduction

EXTRACTING THE METAL

There are 2 main economic factors to take

into account:
1. The cost of energy
2. The cost of the reducing agent
For metal below carbon in the reactivity series

Cheapest method :
Heat it with carbon
BLAST FURNACE
For metal above carbon in the reactivity series

Method :
Electrolysis

ALLOYS

An alloy is a
mixture of a metal
with, usually other
metal or carbon.
Alloy are harder
than the
ALLOYS individual metals
from which they
are made
