The study of the evaporative drying of a solution droplet is

important in many technologies, such as inkjet printing,
coatings, microfluidics, DNA mapping, and also in disease
detection and early diagnosis using body fluids. When a droplet
containing colloidal particles (like blood) or nanomaterials
evaporates on a solid substrate, a ring-shaped deposit is
generally obtained due to an uneven drying process. This is

DASPCC22 is a donor-acceptor type of molecule whose

fluorescence properties are very sensitive to the changes in the
microenvironment. It has a negligible fluorescence in aqueous
Chemistry medium forming J-aggregates. However, fluorescence intensity
is enormously enhanced upon binding with beta-cyclodextrin
due to the dissociation of aggregates forming monomers. It has
been noted that sodium perchlorate at a low concentration acts
as a salting-out agent and stabilizes the host-guest complexes; as
a result, the fluorescence intensity is further enhanced.

chemical inputs and optical output. In order to convert the
continuous analog emission data into binary digits, a particular
threshold will be applied to the emission channel of a given
wavelength. Fluorescence intensities noted above and below the
threshold will be taken as ON and OFF responses, respectively,
and denoted by the binary values 1 and 0, respectively. A cut-
off threshold value will be chosen for all systems, and therefore,
ON and OFF states can be clearly distinguished.

Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) is a group of lung disorders that

involve the inflammation and scarring of the lung tissue. ILD
can lead to difficulty breathing, coughing, and, ultimately,
respiratory failure [4]. Early detection and accurate diagnosis of
ILD are crucial for effective treatment and improved patient
outcomes. Currently, ILD is diagnosed using a combination of
clinical examination, medical imaging, and biopsy [5,6].
However, these methods can be time-consuming, invasive, and
prone to interpretation errors. Therefore, there is a need for a
more efficient and accurate way of ILD detection. Hence, AI-
Detection of Interstitial Lung based techniques have been proposed in the literature [4-6].

Learning and AI Algorithms approach as perceived from recent surveys, which is either
tuned manually or are based on classical machine learning
approaches. The detection problem becomes difficult when the
intraclass variance is huge and interclass variance is less, which
is quite frequent and thus traditional machine learning faces the
hindrance of data shortage. Thus to mitigate the situation, the
grammar of vasculature in lungs can be learnt instead of specific
instances, through a vector representation of the network, that
scales well. This is expected to enhance explainability in the
machine learning algorithms and ease the registration of new
disease definitions, without actual instance of it.

A Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) is a wireless network
made up of a collection of microscopic biomedical nodes that
are dispersed around the human body's surface, inside the body,
in the clothes or next to it. WBAN, also known as Wireless
Body Sensor Network (WBSN), is a specific kind of Wireless
Sensor Networks (WSNs) that is defined in IEEE 802.15.6
(IEEE, 2012). With a wide range of data transmission speed to
suit various application types, IEEE 802.15.6 offers dependable
communications across short distances. The incredibly low
power sensor nodes can track the body's critical physiological
indicators, and some of them may even administer a dose of
medication directly into the body. A distant server or a sink
node will receive real-time readings of the body's bio-signals
from wearable devices and Implantable Medical Devices
(IMDs). Depending on the kind of node, the monitored signals

Security pressure, respiration measurement, heart rate, and blood glucose
levels (EMG) etc. The high rate of death caused by various
chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, Parkinson,
asthma, and various other fatal diseases can be predicted with
early detection using sensors on the patient's body. Fig.1 shows
an example of a WBAN. Monitoring these physiological factors
in older people or people with chronic illnesses gives them more
freedom and flexibility and enables prompt intervention when
necessary.
The main issues preventing the widespread implementation of
WBANs are security and privacy concerns. Sensitive and
extremely important data is sent by sensor nodes. Any
compromise would violate the patients' right to privacy and even
put their lives in danger. To address potential security

Remote attestation protocols have recently gained wide
attention in IoT systems
as valuable security mechanisms that detect the adversarial
presence and guarantee
the legitimate state of IoT devices. Various attestation schemes
have been proposed
to optimize the effectiveness and efficiency of remote attestation
protocols of a single
IoT device or a group of IoT devices. Nevertheless, some cyber
attacks remain
undetected by current attestation methods, and attestation
protocols still introduce
non-negligible computational overheads for resource-
constrained devices.
Due to the proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT), the
exponential growth of data produced by end-point devices has
prompted the implementation of data outsourcing to specialized
data centers. Cloud storage and other centralized data centers
are incapable of affordably managing large data repositories in
an expeditious fashion. In order to facilitate access to
humongous data with minimal latency, a novel computing
paradigm known as fog computing has been implemented. Due
to the intricate nature of the system's inner workings, privacy
concerns regarding outsourced data become more critical in a

In this era of the digital world, everything from manufacturing
floors in the industry to smart cities, energy grids, healthcare
facilities, transportation systems, and homes is connected to the
Internet. The new IoT applications are enabling smart city
initiatives worldwide, including in India. It provides the ability
to remotely monitor, manage and control devices, and to create
new insights and actionable information from massive streams
of real-time data. The IEEE 802.15.4 is one such technology
that facilitates low-power communication among constrained
IoT devices. However, specific gaps in the standard prevent
easy deployment of the IEEE 802.15.4 network, and only some
issues are left for the implementer to address. Alternatively, the
shortcomings in the DSME MAC result in sub-optimal network
performance in large deployments like a smart campus or a
smart city. Especially, issues like scheduling transmissions in

standard. This restrict the network’s scalability and affects the
Quality of Service (QoS) parameters like throughput and
latency. For instance, in a smart city deployment, multi-hop
communication between these devices will increase scalability
to encompass a more prominent city area. However, it gives rise
to several transmission scheduling and synchronization
challenges. Loss of crucial data (from collisions) can be
disastrous in several aspects of health care, transportation, etc.
The transmission of beacons in an unorganized fashion results in
a loss of synchronization among the devices and incurs
overhead for the re-association process. These severely hinders
the communication both within and among the smart city
applications. Moreover, the standard lacks a multi-channel

This proposal focuses on Long Range (LoRa) technologies as an

enabling communication standard for large Internet of Things
(IoT) applications. The LoRa communication is one of the most
suitable link-layer technologies for resource constrained IoT
devices due to its low-power and very high transmission range
(3-12 km). LoRa Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) defines
several physical and medium access control (MAC) sub-layer
specifications for low-power wide area networks (LPWAN).
Multiple IoT devices communicate at the same time in large,
dynamic, heterogeneous LoRa networks. Devices communicate
whenever there is data to be transmitted since the ALOHA
mechanism is used. This may cause the data frames to collide,
which could result in the loss of important data. Furthermore,
Development of a Light-weight these power-constrained devices' energy consumption is greatly 1 year commitment and interest in

LoRa MAC transmission of these devices is essential. Moreover, the is desirable.
schedule needs to be updated to optimize channel consumption
due to changes in network architecture. The LoRaWAN
standard does not define any scheduling mechanism to avoid
overlapping transmissions. Previous efforts in this direction have
not focused to the schedules' convergence time, which leaves
dense and dynamic networks with less-than-ideal QoS values.
These networks suffer from higher power consumption and sub-
optimal network performance. Therefore, in this proposal, we
aim to propose a MAC protocol for scheduling to improve
network performance in multiple access networks. Furthermore,
a re-synchronization mechanism that adapts to dynamic network
conditions is to be developed that will facilitate quick
convergence of the system in channel varying environments.

TL; DR: The idea is to introduce a new brain-inspired

regulariser for Neural Networks/Deep Networks and investigate
if it has specific advantages over existing Deep Learning
paradigms.

Neurons in the brain are electric in nature. Due to spatial

constraints, they tend to be packed in close proximity to each
other. As a result, electrical activity in a neuron alters the local
electric field, influencing the activity of nearby neurons, even if
they may not be otherwise directly connected. This phenomenon
is called ephaptic coupling. CS F425 Deep Learning with an A

constrain the output of the units, as well as learning.
Surprisingly, this is a direction that hasn’t yet been explored
systematically in deep networks. Traditionally, the provenance
of effective regularizers such as DropOut have been via
inspiration from phenomena in Biology/Neuroscience. Indeed,
the principles that govern how regularization precisely helps
deep networks generalize, remain poorly understood and
therefore it is reasonable to model known phenomena from the
brain, to this end. Furthermore, modeling work in the
neuroscience context has suggested that ephaptic coupling could
offer computational benefits relative to synaptic communication.

Here, we propose incorporating multiple models of ephaptic

coupling in Deep Neural Networks and investigate the

that reproduce the working of biological neurons in the cerebral
cortex to unprecedented accuracy. However, a shortcoming of
these techniques is that it requires prohibitively large amounts of
data to train, due to which it is not feasible to apply to real-
world settings. This project will investigate the potential for
transfer learning to overcome this shortcoming. Specifically, we
will explore if the known anatomical structure of the neuron can
help significantly reduce the amount of activity data needed to
train the network. This project, ultimately, has potential
implications to the problem of brain uploading, i.e. creating
exact computer models of our brains.

Epithelial cells act as fundamental building blocks controlling

the structure of multicellular organisms. These cells differ in
shape, varying from columnar to cubic and undergo dynamic
reorganization to create 3-d tissue and organ structures from
planar layers of cells. However, the 3-d architecture and packing
of cells within the complex tissue structures remain largely
underexplored. These parameters also influence the biophysical
and mechanical properties of the tissues which dictate complex
biological processes like morphogenesis and organ Familiarity with solid mechanics

approximately 10-25% of the global population and is
characterized by a temporary absence or significantly low arch

feet. Orthotic insoles are important aids in conservative
treatment of flat foot problem. However, conventional
customized insoles are often limited due to their relatively high
manufacturing cost and fabrication time. While recently the
usage of 3-d printing techniques for manufacturing of such
orthotic devices have become popular, the effect of different
microstructures on their biomechanical properties remains

These droplets are in the size range of nano litres to femto litres.
With droplet-based systems it is possible to capture single cells
or single molecules in a droplet (compartment) to carry out
downstream analyses. This lab project is to study the parameters
that affect the droplet generation process. Use the data to
automate the droplet generation process.
