Multiplication of Radicals

Review:
Find the product. Simplify your answer if
possible
1) ( 3)( 7) = 3●7 = 21
2) (2 5)(4 11) = (2 ● 4) 5●11 = 8 55
3) (2 3)(5 6) = (2 ●5) 3●6
= 10 18
= 10 9●2
= 10●3 2
= 30 2
Remember: The square of a single square root is
the number inside/radicand.
Example:
2 2 2
1) 5 = 5 3) 3 7 =32
7
2
= 9(7)
Note: 5 ● 5 is the same as
= 63
5

2) 27 = 27

Note: 27 ● 27 is the same as 27
Multiplication of expressions that
contain radicals is very similar to
multiplication of polynomials.
Multiplying Radicals: When
multiplying radicals (with the same
index), multiply under the radical, and
then multiply in front of the radical
(any values multiplied times the
radicals).
Multiplication of Radicals
Example 1:

= 2●4 5●3 + 2 5●8 distribute to 4 &

= 8 15 + 2 40 get the product of the radicands

= 8 15 + 2 4●10 Factor 40 using perfect squares

= 8 15 + 2●2 10 Extract the root

= 8 15 + 4 10 simplify

= 4 9 + 24 Get the product of the radicands

= 4 ● 3+ 4●6 Factor the radicand

= 12+ 2 6 Extract the root

Example 4:

= (3●2) 5●6 - (3 ●4) 5●10 Distribute

= 6 30 - 12 50 Get the product of the radicand and the factors

= 6 30 - 12 25●2 Factor the radicands

= 6 30 - 12●5 2 Extract the root
= 6 30 - 60 2 multiply the factors
Word Problem:
Find the area of a rectangle whose length
and width are (5x 5 + 3) meters and
3 7meters respectively.

(5x 5 + 3) m Solution: A = l x w
A = 3 7(5x 5 + 3)
3 7 m A = (3●5x) 7●5 + 3 7●3
A = 15x 35 + 3 21 meters
