1) i) Is zero a rational number? If so, write it in the form , where p and q are integers and q ≠ 0?
𝑞
ANSWER
𝐩
Thus, yes, zero is a rational number, as it can be written in the form of 𝐪

𝐩
Since, 0 (zero) is an integer thus, zero can be written in the form of 𝐪
0 0 0
Example : 1 , 2 , 3, etc. where 0 (zero) is an integer.

ii) The decimal form of an irrational number is neither ______ nor ______.
ANSWER Terminating , Repeating

2) Express in p/q form: 5.678678678…

ANSWER
let 𝑥 = 5.678678678678 … … … .. (i)
Multiply 1000 both sides
1000x = 5678.678678678678 … … … .. (ii)
Subtracting (ii) from (i)
999𝑥 = 5673
𝑥 = 1891/333

6) Convert in standard form: 500 , 1944

ANSWER
500 = √2 × 2 × 5 × 5 × 5 = √22 × 52 × 5 = 10√5

1944 = √2 × 2 × 2 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = √22 × 2 × 32 × 32 × 3 = 18√6

8) Rationalise: [3 marks]
48 + 18

ANSWER
4√3 + 5√2
√48 + √18
Dividing numerator and denominator by √48 − √18
4√3 + 5√2(√48 − √18)
=
√48 + √18(√48 − √18)
4√3√48 − 4√3√18 + 5√2√48 − 5√2√18

9) In each of the following determine rational numbers a and b: = a+b√5 [3 marks]
4−3√5

ANSWER
4 + 3√5
= 𝑎 + 𝑏√5
4 − 3√5
on solving then taking rationalising
4 + 3√5 × 4 + 3√5
= 𝑎 + 𝑏√5
4 − 3√5 × 4 + 3√5
(4 + 3√5)2
⇒ = 𝑎 + 𝑏√5
16 − 45
16 + 45 + 24√5
⇒ = 𝑎 + 𝑏√5

ANSWER
11) Give an example of two irrational number such that: i) Product is irrational. [3 marks]
ii) Quotient is rational.
iii) Difference is rational.
ANSWER
(i) √𝟐, √𝟑 are the irrational numbers,
their product √6 is also an irrational number. (Other examples are also allowed)

(ii) The number are √8 and √2.

√8 8
Their quotient = √2 = √4 = 2, which is a rational number. (Other examples are also allowed)
√2

(iii) (2 + √2) − (−2 + √2) = 4

4 is a rational number. (Other examples are also allowed)

12) Prove that: x −1 y y −1 z z −1 x = 1 [3 marks]

ANSWER

14) True or False: [3 marks]
i) Every point on the number line is of the form m , where m is a natural number.
ii) Every real number is an irrational number.
iii) The sum and difference of two irrational numbers is always irrational.

ANSWER
(i) False: A number line may have negative or positive number.
Since, no negative can be the square root of a natural number, thus every point the the number line
cannot be in the form of √m, where m is a natural number.

(ii) False : Real numbers are any number which can we think. Thus, every irrational number is a real
number. But every real number is not irrational number as real number also contains natural
numbers and every type of number.

(iii) False: JUSTIFICATION

(2 + √2) − (−2 + √2) = 4
4 is a rational number not an irrational number.
