Reflection

While in the beginning I had no idea how I would come up with the structure and purpose

of this assignment, over the past months I was able to reflect on myself as a writer and student to

create a unique piece. Though it wasn’t completely easy, I did enjoy the process and the learning

that came with it.

When I began to brainstorm for this assignment, I was unsure where to start or what I

needed to focus on. In my mind, my education history and journey of literacy was not as

powerful or impactful as the ones I have read from other students. However, I went for a walk,

turned on some music and made myself replay memories throughout my childhood and early

adulthood. Soon I realized I wanted to have part of the assignment to reflect on my mother’s

literacy journey since she has always been supporting me. From there I began to remember the

struggles I went through growing up and moving around, so I felt that I could draw from that.

After having read some other students’ writings, I wanted to tell my story in a personable

tone that felt relatable and human. However, I also find myself rambling on with extensive

details and added thoughts that the audience does not need to necessarily know, so part of my

peer review was going back and taking out some unnecessary moments. I tried not to assume

what the reader would understand or know about where I grew up or what my situations felt like,

so I still made sure to use details and create the scenarios in a descriptive way.

I suppose the hardest part of the assignment was narrowing down my ideas to the main

points. In my first draft I had a few extra paragraphs that just discussed small parts of my life or

little things that in the larger picture did not need to be part of the writing. However, once I

figured out what key events I wanted to focus on, I was easy to sit down and just let my brain run

through my thoughts. Near the end I did have difficulty coming up with a strong and memorable
conclusion, but after some time away from the assignment I can back with a clearer mind and

was able to bring it all together.

While completing this assignment I remembered just how much I enjoy writing. I don’t

really enjoy writing about myself, but I enjoy creating a story in hopes of immersing someone

and telling a unique story. However, I also was able to reflect on my literacy journey since I

never truly looked back in my life to see what brought me to this moment. I also felt more

confident with revising my writing after reading from our textbook and did not feel any stress

when going back and changing some things.

All in all, I would say this project was very helpful. It allowed me to reflect on my

literacy and how I got here. But it also brought me back into writing and thinking more deeply

about where I come from and where I will go.
