System Description
A distribution panel is a component of an electricity supply system that divides an electrical power feed
into subsidiary circuit, while providing a protective fuse or circuit breaker for each circuit in a common
NEMA enclosure. Comes from the name itself “distribution” this boards deliver power supply to smaller all
the way to the power outlets and the illumination system. Panel boards are categorized as Lighting Panel
(LP) and Power Panel (PP).
The Main Distribution Panel are installed inside the Low Voltage Switch Gear (LVSG) room located at the
5th Floor of Grand Hyatt Manila South Tower Residences. The electrical power that was distributed by the
LVSG down to the Distribution Panel (DP) and to be transmitted to the Lighting Panel (LP) and Power
Panel (PP).
Capacity and rating of Circuit Breaker in every Panel Boards and Enclosed Circuit Breakers are specified
in the Electrical Load Schedule and Single Line Diagram.
The Brands of Circuit Breakers are also approved by the Electrical Designer based on the specified
purpose.
Enclosure was also specified as NEMA-1 for indoor usage, NEMA-3R for outdoor usage. Location in
which these Panel Boards and ECB to be installed was specified in the Electrical Plan.

Power system is a network of electrical components used to supply, transmit and use electrical power.
Grand Hyatt Manila South Tower Residences Project has an energy center located at Ground Floor, 2 nd
Floor and 5th Floor. It is supplied from the public utility power grid which is Meralco. The project has 1 pad
mounted transformer, 1 set of High Voltage Switchgear, 2 sets of ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch) in
which ATS-1 is a combination of LVSG (Low Voltage Switchgear). Two generator sets rated 1000 kW
each are installed at Gen Set Room and 1 set of Generator Paralleling Switchgear installed at energy
center are capable of servicing the building in case of power supply outage. Circuit Breaker is within the
system design from plug-in, lighting panel to distribution panel and circuit branches; it serves as
protection from damage by overload or short circuit. Its basic function is to detect a fault condition and by
interrupting continuity, to immediately discontinue electrical flow. The majority of outlets to be used for
services are Convenience outlets. Grand Hyatt Manila South Tower Residences Project Convenience
Outlets are mainly installed at all units of the building, hallways and lift lobby, Amenity Area in which
controlled by a circuit breaker.

System Operation
One pad mounted transformer rated 2500Kva, 3Ø for Grand Hyatt Manila South Residences will bring
the 34.5kV distribution voltage to 400/230V wye grounded system. This will be the electrical
characteristics of the power distribution system for the said building.
The big motor loads like elevators, fan and blowers, etc, are connected 3-phase, 400 volts, while the
lighting loads, general use receptacle, small motors and other electrical loads will use the line-neutral
connection which operates at 230 volts. Each rentable space and retails will be served by the 3-
phase, 400/230 volts system.
During the normal power failure, the electrical system was back-up by the 2 units of 1000kw
Generators which are connected to a Synchronizing Switch Gear and transferred to LVSG via
Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) of the entire Building during power interruption.
It is important to ensure that the system is operating properly. Before you start-up the system, first
consider the following procedure to maximize safety during operation time.
1. Make sure that all circuit breakers are in the “OFF” position.
2. Before switching “ON” make sure that all conductor terminals are tested for continuity and check
the main supply voltage.
3. If such test was passed, then proceed powering-up the main protective device.
4. Measure the load voltage if it coincides with the plan and specification.
5. Repeat step 2 to step 4 before switching “ON” the mains of the panels for Lighting and Power.
6. Measure the voltage in outlet.
During shutdown operation, it is important that we must consider safety for our equipment’s in order
to extend its life span. Before shutting down the system we must consider the following:
1. Make sure that all kinds of loads are disconnected from the system (small or large capacity
loads). Inform all users of electricity in the building before shutting down the entire system. If
possible provide a memorandum stating the date, time and reason for conduction such activity.
2. Shut down first the panel for every area/loads (lighting/power) before shutting down the main
panels.
1. Before shutting down any of the lighting circuit makes sure that there will be at least one
emergency light present and nobody is in the area to be shut-off for safety purposes.

System Maintenance
Distribution panels are used, together with the equipment fitted in them, to control, switch and
conduct electrical energy, so a test/maintenance is needed to be carried out periodically to ensure the
correct function of the circuits.
The following Electrical Test shall be conducted prior to energization of the Distribution Panel:
Test equipment will depend on the rating and type of installation. Portable voltmeters of the multi-
scale type will be required. For larger installations, ammeters should be available in case unexpected
circumstances arise. An ohmmeter and insulation tester will prove invaluable in checking insulation
and continuity of the circuits. A simple portable device for “ringing” or “lighting-out” circuits may be
used for the continuity check and a trip test for the circuit breakers.
Hazardous voltages in electrical equipment can cause severe personal injury or death, inspection and
maintenance should only be performed on panelboards to which power has been turned off,
disconnected and electrically isolated to avoid accidental contact with energized parts. Inhalation of
dust when cleaning the panelboard is possible; wearing a protective mask is needed. Also be sure to
locate the terminals for neutral and equipment grounding conductors so a person doesn’t have to
reach beyond live parts to make connection.
The panel board is alternately heated and cooled as the current is turned on and off, this causes
expansion and contraction of the parts of the panel board that tends to loosen fuses and connections.
The connections between the panel board unit parts and busbars, as well as connection between
wires and panel board unit parts should be checked and tightened where necessary. Look for rust,
corrosion, subtle spots, suspect hidden damage to bus or breakers, look for water trace marks on
entering section. Also, fuse contacts should be inspected.

TROUBLE CHECK/SOLUTION
Check the light bulb first to see if it has burned out. If so, replace the
bulb
Check to see if the bulb is tight in the socket. The constant on-off
flow of electricity can sometimes loosen a light bulb in the socket.
Simply screwing in tighter will fix the problem.
Check the metal socket tab in the bottom center of the socket. If it
has become flattened, you may have to bend it back up slightly in
order for it to make contact with the bulb.
If the light bulb does not light up
Check the connections at the switch and make sure that they are

tight. Be sure that the power is off to the circuit that you are working
on.
With the power shut off, check the wire connections at the light
fixture and at the breaker panel to make sure they are all connected
tightly. If you have concerns about these connections, you may want
to have these examined by a qualified electrician. Unless you are
very experienced at electrical work, do not tamper with connections
in the circuit breaker panel.

It usually means that the switch contacts are getting bad. Usually
you’ll be able to hear a sizzling or crackling sound if the switch
contacts are bad. In this case, replace the switch.
It also could be that the wire connections are loose. This could be on
the switch itself, at the circuit breaker panel, or in a pass-through

wire connection in the wall box or ceiling box. By far the most
common problem is a loose wire connection at the switch itself,
which is subject to constant on-off usage.
Less commonly, a light bulb socket may go bad. If so, you will need
to replace the socket.
Adjust the Fluorescent Tubes. Fluorescent tubes can become loose
in their holders, possibly causing buzzing. After removing the
diffuser, check each tube to make sure that it is tight. To reseat a
tube, rotate it 90 degrees in either direction.
Fix the metal housing or diffuser. Fluorescent lights are made of
Fluorescent Light Fixture is sheet metal and plastic and can become loose or damaged
buzzing overtime. A minor buzz that otherwise might be tolerable will be
amplified by a loose or broken light fixtures. Remove the diffuser. If it
is cracked, replace it with a new one. Reinstall the diffuser and make
sure that it is tightly in place.
Replace the light fixture entirely if replacing the defective ballast is
not feasible.
TROUBLE CHECK/SOLUTION
If every light or electrical device plugged into the outlet has stopped
working, then it is likely a tripped circuit breaker. If the problem is
isolated to one appliance, it probably the result of loose wires, or a
poor connection.
Loose connections. If your outlet is still dead after all this, you may
have a loose connection inside the outlet itself. Ensure your
electrical devices are powered off. Head to the circuit breaker and
turn off the power to the house from the main breaker. Next, use a
screwdriver to remove the outlet from the wall and examine the
connections. Some electricians use stab-in links, which may become
The switches or outlet Isn’t loose over time. You might need to give the wires a slight tub to see
working / no power supply if they’re stuck in correctly.
Outlets can be defective. If you have exhausted all the steps above,
you may simply need to replace the outlet. If you intend on replacing
it yourself, be sure to turn off the breaker. Then, remove the outlet
cover and carefully disconnect the wires with a screwdriver.
Reconnect the new outlet by reversing this process.
Burned Out Outlets. Strong electrical currents can create small fires
in your wiring, causing an outlet to working. If an outlet shows any
blackening, a small fire has occurred, and the entire outlet needs to
be replaced. Burned out outlets are serious fire hazards and should
be fixed immediately.
Contact points are worn. The prongs contact metal conductors inside
when you plug a device into an outlet. These conductors provide
Plugs feel loose in an outlet electrical current and a friction grip on the prongs. When the contacts
wear down, the plug connection feels loose. The only remedy is to
replace the outlet.
