The endocrine system causes changes that occur more slowly than those caused by the

In ancient societies, athletics and especially competitive contact games always have been rough, but
aggression in the past was tempered by an insistence that playing hard, playing to win, did not
countenance playing to cheat and to hurt. One of the very first nations that expressed athletic ideals
were the Greeks. As enunciated by Pindar, the athletic ideal incorporated courage and endurance
with modesty, dignity, and fairmindedness, those elusive qualities the Greeks called Aidos. As
sports became more specialized, the general populace increasingly withdrew into spectatorship.
Sports history reveals that although Greek sports had increasingly marred by corruption and bribes,

A BAD DAY AT MAGIC LAND

Many people like to go to amusement parks to have fun, but I don’t! Last year, a
group of my friends decided to spend the whole day at Magic Land, an amusement park in
my city. I thought I would have a very good time, but I was wrong. I had the worst time
ever.
We went on too many roller coasters. At first, they were all very exciting and I
screamed until my lungs hurt on all of them. My friends wanted to ride more of them, and
so for three hours we didn’t stop to rest. We went on the Head Knocker, the Crazy Coaster,
and the Monster Masher before I started feeling really sick. I finally threw up on the Tooth
Rattler roller coaster. I was very embarrassed.
That was when my friends decided that we needed a lunch break if they wanted me
to survive the whole day. My stomach was still feeling awful, but they insisted that I
needed to eat if I was going to have enough energy for the rest of the day. When I went to
one of the food stands, however, I saw that the prices were outrageous. I spent six dollars
on a large order of fries. I picked up the saltshaker,
and to my surprise the top fell off, spilling a pile of salt on my food. My fries were ruined!
By now I was really upset and my face was red, so my friends suggested we go on a
water ride so I could cool down. I thought it was a good idea, but when we rode it, I forgot
to take my glasses off. At one point, they fell off and into the water. I watched helplessly as
they sank to the bottom while we kept rushing forward in our raft. I had to go through the
rest of the day practically blind.
I have decided that I will never go to Magic Land again, even if someone offered me a
million dollars to do it!

I. 1. Read the text below and complete the following tasks. Write all your answers on
the Answer Sheet.
THE FOUNDING OF PHILADELPHIA
The woodlands were alive with color when William Penn arrived for the first time,
in 1682. It was late October, still the best time of the year in the Northeast. But he wasn’t
there to admire the countryside. He had already given it a name, of course. It was the same
name as that of one of the early Christian cities in Asia Minor which, when translated,
means “City of Brotherly Love”. (1) ______ Penn borrowed the name from them because it
suited perfectly the ideal community he had in mind.
The spot he picked, on the banks of the Delaware River, had a small harbor and a beach.
(2) ______ What he wanted, he said, was a “green country town”.
In his travels he had seen the great cities of Europe and hadn’t always liked what he saw.
(3) ______ His new city would have a plan for growth and that, he was convinced, would
make it one of the great cities of the world.
For openers, he ordered that Philadelphia would have no crooked streets. (4) ______
He told his surveyors that he also wanted the roads to lead out of the city, so that it would
be convenient to reach other cities yet unbuilt. He specified that no houses could be built
within 200 paces of the harbor so there would be plenty of room for a future commercial
center, and he asked that home builders center their structures on building lots “…so there
may be ground on each side for gardens, orchards or field, that it may be a green country
town which will never be burnt and will always be wholesome.”
