I. LESSON TITLE Planets in the Solar System
II. MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING Construct a model of the solar system showing the relative sizes of the
COMPETENCIES (MELCs) planets and their relative distances from the Sun.
III. CONTENT/CORE CONTENT Planets / Characteristics of planets in solar system
IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
I. Introduction (Time Frame: DAY 1)
You have learned from the previous lesson that planets differ in many characteristics such as their average
temperature and distance from the Sun. They also differ in size, mass, rate of rotation, revolution, and the number
of rings and moons. This time, you will construct a model of the solar system showing the relative sizes of the planets
and their relative distance from the Sun.

Study the table below on the relative distance and size of planets:
Planet Size
Planets Distance from the Sun
(Equatorial diameter in km)
Mercury 58 million km 4 880 km
Venus 108 million km 12 104 km
Earth 149 million km 12 750 km
Mars 227 million km 6 788 km
Jupiter 774 million km 142 984 km
Saturn 1.4 billion km 120 536 km
Uranus 2.9 billion km 51 118 km
Neptune 4.5 billion km 49 532 km

D. Development (Time Frame: DAY 2-3)

Learning Task 1: Complete the table by converting the measured distance of planets into centimeters (cm)
using the scale 1 cm = 10 million km. Write your answer on your answer sheets. Make use of the following formula
as an example in converting the distance into the given scale.

Example computation of distance of Mercury:

Scaled distance = distance from the sun x 1 cm
10,000,000 km

Scaled distance = 58,000,000 km x 1 cm

10,000,000 km

Scaled distance = 5.8 x 1 cm = 5.8 cm

Scaled distance into

Planet Distance from the Sun

Mercury 58 million km 5.8 cm
Venus 108 million km
Earth 149 million km
Mars 227 million km
Jupiter 774 million km
Saturn 1.4 billion km
Uranus 2.9 billion km
Neptune 4.5 billion km
IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Learning Task 2: The Planets

Arrange the planets in increasing order by placing 1 on the planet, which corresponds to the least and 8 on
the planet, which corresponds to the most, based on the given properties. Column no. 1 is given as an example.

Properties
Planets Orbit/Period Size Distance from Temperature No. of Moons
the Sun
Mercury 1
Venus 2
Earth 3
Mars 4
Jupiter 5
Saturn 6
Uranus 7
Neptune 8

Learning Task 3: Complete the table by converting the measured size of planets into centimeters (cm) using the
scale 1 cm = 1 000 km. Write your answer on your answer sheets. Make use of the following formula as an example
of converting the size into the given scale.

Example computation of size of Mercury:

Scaled size = planet size x 1 cm
1,000 km

Scaled size = 4,880 km x 1 cm

1,000 km

Scaled size = 4.88 x 1 cm = 4.88 cm

Planet Size
Planet Scaled size into centimeters
(Equatorial diameter in km)
Mercury 4 880 km 4.88 cm
Venus 12 104 km
Earth 12 750 km
Mars 6 788 km
Jupiter 142 984 km
Saturn 120 536 km
Uranus 51 118 km
Neptune 49 532 km

E. Engagement (Time Frame: DAY 4-6)

Learning Task 4: Using any available materials from home, make your own model of the solar system. The following
are the suggested color and size of the planets:

Mercury (orange) – 3 cm Jupiter (brownish with a red spot) – 10 cm

Venus (yellow) – 5 cm Saturn (yellow with red ring) – 10 cm
Earth (blue) – 5 cm Uranus (green) – 8 cm
Mars (red) – 4 cm Neptune (blue) – 8 cm
Sun (yellow) – 25 cm
