What Is It

This is good to know . . .

An informative essay, sometimes called expository essay, informs or

educates reader on a topic. It introduces a clearly stated topic/controlling idea.
Functions:
1. to define a term
Example : What is Youth?
Ibarahim Jubaira ( English Communication Arts and Skills Through
Philippine Literature )
2. compare and contrast something
Example : Airplane and Helicopter : Their Similarities and Differences
3. provide a how-to
Example : How to Study Effectively
(Source: Ventures in Communication English 7 )
Informative essay uses the present tense of verb and typically answers
one of the five Ws; who, what, when, where, and why. It can also answer
“how-to,” indicating how to do something. It must never express your opinion
or try to convince others to take a certain action or stance.
The basic structure of an informative essay is very simple. It needs to have a
beginning, middle, and end. These are known more formally as the
introduction, body and conclusion

5
The introduction contains techniques that grab reader’s attention such
as famous quotes, statistics, or interesting questions. The introduction also
contains the thesis statement. A thesis statement is a statement that
expresses the claim of the writer about the topic. It is like a roadmap that will
tell the reader the focus of the writer.
The body is composed of paragraphs that support the main claim of the
essay. Each paragraph contains a topic sentence that carries the main idea
of the paragraph. This topic sentence is supported by examples, statistics and
facts. It should be clear and concise. Avoid sentences that start with the
following:
 In this paragraph…
 I am going to tell you about…
 This paragraph will be about…
The conclusion is the last paragraph of the essay. It contains a
restatement of the main claim/ thesis statement of the essay and a summary of
the main points.

Things to Remember
An informative essay …
 introduces a clearly stated topic/controlling idea.
 creates an organizational structure in which related information is
grouped logically to support the writer’s purpose.
 develops evidence with relevant facts, definitions, concrete details,
quotations, and examples with references to sources.
 uses precise language and content specific words clearly appropriate for
audience and purpose.
 uses appropriate transition words within and across paragraphs to
smoothly and purposefully connect the controlling idea to evidence.
Transition Words
Body Paragraph Concluding
First Details Middle Details Last Details Sentence
 First  Also  Finally  In conclusion
 For  Next  Last  To summarize
example  Plus  Last but not  As you can see
 To start In addition least  All in all
 To begin Second  Therefore
 Third  On the whole
 provides satisfying conclusion related to the topic.

B. Conclusion E. Thesis statement/Main Claim
C. Introduction F. Topic Sentence/Main point

Making and Keeping Friends

Making and keeping friends is fun, but it also takes effort. Some
people think that making and keeping friends is natural and requires
(1)
nothing but hanging out and having fun. (4) There are important things to
remember in making and keeping friends.
(5) A lot of friends are having things in common, so it’s easy to
share parts of their life with the other person. (6) For example, if both like
drawing or Legos, then they can do that together and share their creations.
They can even create together! Sometimes sharing parts of your life is
simply telling the other person what is going on in your life and keeping in
touch.
(7) Showing you care about the other person’s happiness is
another important part of being friends. (8) Sometimes people do nice
(2) things to put a smile on their friends’ faces. Another common way to make
your friends happy is to make them laugh. Sometimes, when they are
down, just showing you care is enough to make them feel better.
(9) Being there for friends when times really get tough is the
hardest part of being friends. Sometimes people don’t know what to do or
say when their friends are hurting, so it’s uncomfortable. (10) A hurting
friend usually just needs someone to listen, but sometimes it’s nice to help
them think about their problem and generate a solution. There are also
times when they are down because a friend hurt them and that’s when that
friend needs to apologize and ask how to make it better.
Having fun with someone is easy, but friendship takes time
(3) and effort. You have to take care of your relationship like you would take
care of a plant. People need to feel connected to their friends and know
that they care.
