What is It

Engine bay of an Automobile

BASIC ENGINE SYSTEMS

1. Fuel System - It supplies a combustible mixture of air and fuel (gasoline or

diesel) to the engine. A carburetor is responsible in mixing the two
substances; air and fuel. It is then ignited inside the engine to produce power
that moves the vehicle or car.
Before going on a trip, an important factor is to check the amount of fuel
of your car. This is located in front of the driver and onto the instrument panel.
It is better to know what fuel is used in your car. Do not use diesel fuel on the
car which is a gasoline engine or vice versa. Doing so will damage the
engine of your car. It is better to follow safety procedures when refilling to the
gas station to prevent accidents.

A fuel gauge is a device that informs the driver the amount of fuel. Be sure to
familiarize the location of your gas tank.

6
Fuel Gauge

Instrument Panel where the fuel gauge is located

( F indicates as Full and E indicates as Empty)

2. Lubrication System - uses an oil pump to continuously supply engine oil

throughout the inside of the engine. This system reduces friction between
parts with a film of oil. If the engine is run without oil, the function can be
cause it to run poorly, or cause even meltdown. In addition to lubrication,
engine oil cools and cleans the engine.

STEPS IN CHECKING THE ENGINE OIL

When the car is not used, the engine is considered cold so as the engine
oil.
1. Open the car hood and secure the hood stand to prevent the hood
from falling.
2. Locate the dip stick (sometimes a written mark indicating an engine
oil is exposed.
3. Pull the dip stick and wipe the oil with a cloth or rag to remove oil on
the dipstick.

7
4. Put the dipstick again to the hole where the dipstick is located. For
one last time, remove the dipstick to see where the oil will be expose
to the mark of the dipstick.

Dip Stick Locator

Location of the Dip stick

It is easy to determine the level of the oil. The dipstick is consists of F

mark (Full) and L mark (Low), and in between the F and L is considered 50% of
the oil present inside the engine. In determining the oil level, a thin layer of oil is
attached to the dipstick and see where the oil rest.

Step 2. Oil Markings Indicator

Oil is at full level

8
The old engine oil is easy to look onto the dipstick. Unlike the new oil, it is
sometimes difficult to be noticed. It should at least be done three (3) to find the oil
accurately.
 Oil level at full capacity must be at the F mark.
 Oil level at 50% capacity is not applicable and it should be filled full,
only in the F mark of the dipstick.

3. Cooling System- regulates the engine temperature to an optimal level (80 to

90°C at coolant temperature) by circulating the coolant throughout the engine.
The cooling fan cools the coolant in the radiator and water pump circulates the
coolant through the cylinder head and the cylinder block.
Coolant is mixture of water and other chemicals to prevent the engine from
overheating. Coolant is a different type of liquid and without the use of coolant,
tap water can also be use.

Temperature Gauge

STEPS IN CHECKING THE COOLANT IN THE RADIATOR

1. When the engine is cold, remove the radiator cap.

2. If the coolant in the radiator is low, just add coolant until it reaches at full
capacity.
3. Tap water is also recommended if coolant is unavailable. Do not spill the
coolant to prevent from slipping or sliding.

9
Radiator
Checking the coolant level

Some cooling systems is provided with an expansion tank. It is also

recommended to check the coolant in the expansion tank. If it is low, just add
coolant until it reaches to the full mark only.

Coolant Expansion Tank

Check also the coolant on the expansion tank

4. Starting System- provides cranking action to start the car. This system
relies on a battery to function. Hard starting is also cause by a defective
starter or the cables attached to it. Checking the starter is also involve in
preparing the vehicle because every time you drive, a starting is always
what you do.

10
5. Ignition System- generates sparks at high voltage, and ignites the air-fuel
mixture, which is compressed in the cylinders, at the proper timing.

One important part of the system is the battery that serves as the main
source of electrical energy. The battery should be handled properly to prevent
accidents. The automotive battery is a device that uses chemicals to produce
electricity. One the battery is used, its stored electricity is distributed to other
systems. The electricity that is being used can be replaced by means of charging
the battery. It is also called a wet cell battery that stores 12V (Volt) that supplies
electricity primarily for starting.

TWO TYPES OF WET CELL BATTERY

1. Low Maintenance Battery- consists of vent caps and is use for refilling a
battery solution when serviced.
2. Maintenance free Battery- no vent caps are exposed and no battery solution
is added.

Maintenance Free Battery

Checking the battery

It is advisable to use a volt-meter to check the battery voltage. A standard
12V battery is 12.6V to 13V as its full charge. Below 12.6V is considered
discharged. Inspect the battery cables for corrosion or rusting, the battery case
for cracks, and the battery solution (for low maintenance battery).
