What I Need to Know This will give you an idea of the skills or
competencies you are expected to learn in
the module.
i
What I Have Learned This includes questions or blank
sentences/paragraphs to be filled in to
process what you learned from the lesson.
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of
the module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer What I Know before moving on to the other activities
included in the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your
answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not
hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you are not
alone.
We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning
and gain a deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!

Table of Contents
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to
help you master the nature of Technical and Livelihood Education, in the field
of Automotive. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many
different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse
vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard
sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be
changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

2
PART II. TRUE or FALSE
Directions: Analyze the underlined word/s carefully. Write TRUE if the
statement is correct and FALSE if the statement is wrong. Write your answer
in your TLE - Automotive Activity notebook.
1. It is necessary to apply brakes before releasing the
handbrake.
2. Shifting into gear does not require the use of the clutch in a
Manual Transmission.
3. The steering system is responsible in changing the direction
of the vehicle while traveling.
4. Clutch, brake and gas pedal are found in a manual
transmission car.
5. The steering wheel is located in front of the driver’s side.

Move and Position Vehicle

What is It
Starting an engine
Involves the starting system that forces the engine to crank with an
electric motor, and starts the engine.
Procedure:
1. Insert the key to the ignition key hole.
5
Gear shift lever in P (PARK)
B. If you are starting the car with a manual transmission, depressed the clutch
pedal, then put the gear shift lever in neutral (N).
3. Disengage key hole from the lock position moving the steering wheel and
turning the key clockwise. From LOCK position, turn the key clockwise
going from ON then to START. Once the engine is running, release the key.
(Note: if you do not release the key once the engine starts, the starter will
be damaged.)
4. Apply the brakes before releasing the handbrake. It is recommended to do
this as a habit.
Shifting gears
Shifting in gears may vary from different types of manual transmissions.
There are four (4) speed, five (5) speed manual transmission. This module
focuses only on five speed manual transmission.
6
USING MANUAL TRANSMISSION
1. If the car has a manual transmission, the car has three (3) pedals namely:
the clutch, brake and gas pedals, which are operated by the driver’s feet.
GAS
CLUTCH BRAKE PEDAL
7
Shifting into gear requires the use of a clutch. After starting the engine,
depressed the clutch pedal and engage the gear stick to the first gear.
Release the clutch pedal and apply enough pressure on the gas pedal. If
applied smoothly, the car will slowly move forward.
First, depressed the clutch pedal and engage the gear shift lever to first gear.
After shifting to first gear, it is also advised to depress the clutch pedal
when shifting to the second gear.
8
Shifting gears always require the use of the clutch pedal. It is also be done to
shift to neutral position.
9
Toyota Vios shift pattern Honda Civic shift pattern
Shifting gears can be done easily by just following the pattern or simply
follow the guide located in the gear shift location. From the rest position, first,
you must depressed the brake pedal and shift to D (Drive). Automatically the
car moves forward by also applying the gas.
I. Steering vehicle
The steering system is responsible in changing the direction of the
vehicle. In some countries, like Thailand, UK, Japan, etc., the steering wheel is
located in the Right Hand Drive (RHD). While in Philippines, the steering wheel
is located in the Left Hand Drive (LHD). The front wheels of a vehicle are
steered by turning the steering wheel either in the clockwise direction (going
right ) or counter-clockwise direction (going left).
10
Turning to left direction (counter- Turning to right direction (clockwise)
Brake Application
clockwise)
The braking system is responsible in slowing or stopping the vehicle.
The brakes decelerate or stop a vehicle in motion, or prevent a parked vehicle
from moving. The driver uses right foot to apply pressure to the brake pedal
and the brakes are applied.
Half braking – used for slowing, no clutch is used. Half braking is making the
brake bite.
Full braking – used for stopping completely with use of clutch.
11
Handbrake is applied when parking (Pull only)
Before moving the car, depressed the brake pedal first to prevent from
moving. It is recommended to do this a habit in both manual or automatic car.
Press the release button located at the tip and at the same time pull slightly
the hand brake handle.
What’s More

What I Have Learned
1.Before driving a car you should check the ___________ system to avoid
hitting a car, person or anything while driving.
2. Avoid drinking ____________ to avoid accidents.
3. Always observe road __________ while driving.
4. Apply the brakes before releasing the_______________.
5. In depressing the clutch pedal ,the _________ should hang away from the
Floor.
6. Shifting into a gear requires the use of a ____________.
7.Insert the key to the ignition ky hole and put the shift lever to ________.
8. Afetr shifting to first gear, it is also advised to depress the clutch pedal
when shifting to the ____________.

What I Can Do
Activity: DRAW ME !
Directions: Draw a shifting pattern given below using “five speed manual
transmission” in your TLE – Automotive Activity Notebook. (I’ve already
done the first item. Follow the procedure.)
Example: From Neutral to 1ST Gear.
Guide Picture
1. 1st Gear to 2ND Gear
2.) 1ST Gear to Reverse

Directions: Analyze the underlined word/s carefully. Write Agree if it makes the
statement correct and Disagree if it makes it wrong, do it in your Automotive activity
notebook.
1. It is necessary to apply brakes before releasing the handbrake.
2. Shifting into gear is not requiring the use of the clutch.
3. The steering system is responsible in changing the direction travel
of the vehicle.
4. Clutch, brake and gas pedal are found in a manual transmission
car.
5. The steering wheel is located in front of the driver’s side.
