What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to
help you master the nature of Technical and Livelihood Education, in the field
of Automotive. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many
different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse
vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard
sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be
changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

After reading this module, the learners should be able to:

 Identify or select vehicle to be moved or repositioned as per job

requirement
 Drive vehicle safely to the designated location according to job
specification
 Park vehicle properly following safety procedures and techniques

Move and Position Vehicle
5
What is It

Starting an engine
Involves the starting system that forces the engine to crank with an
electric motor, and starts the engine.

Procedure:
1. Insert the key to the ignition key hole.

Key inserted to the ignition

2. Put the shift lever to neutral position.
A. If you are starting an automatic car, put the gear stick in either the "P"
(Park) or "N" (Neutral) position. Depressing the brake pedal is also a
requirement for starting an automatic transmission car.

5
Gear shift lever in P (PARK)

B. If you are starting the car with a manual transmission, depressed the clutch
pedal, then put the gear shift lever in neutral (N).

3. Disengage key hole from the lock position moving the steering wheel and
turning the key clockwise. From LOCK position, turn the key clockwise
going from ON then to START. Once the engine is running, release the key.
(Note: if you do not release the key once the engine starts, the starter will
be damaged.)
4. Apply the brakes before releasing the handbrake. It is recommended to do
this as a habit.

Shifting gears
Shifting in gears may vary from different types of manual transmissions.
There are four (4) speed, five (5) speed manual transmission. This module
focuses only on five speed manual transmission.

6
USING MANUAL TRANSMISSION
1. If the car has a manual transmission, the car has three (3) pedals namely:
the clutch, brake and gas pedals, which are operated by the driver’s feet.

GAS
CLUTCH BRAKE PEDAL

Actual locations of the pedals in a manual transmission car

Clutch Pedal – The driver operates the clutch by depressing. When

depressing the clutch pedal, the heel should hang away from the floor.
Controlling the pedal should be done by the left foot only.

Applying the clutch using driver’s left foot

7
Shifting into gear requires the use of a clutch. After starting the engine,
depressed the clutch pedal and engage the gear stick to the first gear.
Release the clutch pedal and apply enough pressure on the gas pedal. If
applied smoothly, the car will slowly move forward.

Five speed manual transmission shifting pattern

First, depressed the clutch pedal and engage the gear shift lever to first gear.

Depressing the clutch pedal Shifting to first gear

After shifting to first gear, it is also advised to depress the clutch pedal
when shifting to the second gear.

Depressing the clutch pedal Shifting to second gear

8
Shifting gears always require the use of the clutch pedal. It is also be done to
shift to neutral position.

USING AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

If the car has an automatic gearbox, there must be only two pedals. In
some automatic cars, a flat rubber pad is placed on the far left of the
driver's foot area; this is a "dead pedal" meant to be a place to rest your
foot and it is not a pedal. No clutch pedal is shown in an automatic
transmission car. When starting the car, it should be the same method like
in a manual transmission car. Depressed the brake pedal while the gear
shift lever in P (Park) or N (Neutral).

Actual locations of the pedals in an automatic transmission vehicle, in

which no clutch pedal present.

Shifting gears in an automatic transmission car may vary because of

different shifting patterns.

9
Toyota Vios shift pattern Honda Civic shift pattern
Shifting gears can be done easily by just following the pattern or simply
follow the guide located in the gear shift location. From the rest position, first,
you must depressed the brake pedal and shift to D (Drive). Automatically the
car moves forward by also applying the gas.

I. Steering vehicle
The steering system is responsible in changing the direction of the
vehicle. In some countries, like Thailand, UK, Japan, etc., the steering wheel is
located in the Right Hand Drive (RHD). While in Philippines, the steering wheel
is located in the Left Hand Drive (LHD). The front wheels of a vehicle are
steered by turning the steering wheel either in the clockwise direction (going
right ) or counter-clockwise direction (going left).

Straight position of the steering wheel

A. Turning Right or Left

1. When turning in the right position, rotate the steering wheel clockwise
(left – right).
2. When turning in the left position, rotate the steering wheel counter-
clockwise (right – left).

10
Turning to left direction (counter- Turning to right direction (clockwise)
Brake Application
clockwise)
The braking system is responsible in slowing or stopping the vehicle.
The brakes decelerate or stop a vehicle in motion, or prevent a parked vehicle
from moving. The driver uses right foot to apply pressure to the brake pedal
and the brakes are applied.

TYPES OF BRAKES ACCORDING TO USE

1. Service brake - is a foot operated brake used to control vehicle speed

and stop the vehicle.
2. Parking brake - also called emergency brake, used mainly when the car
is parked. They mechanically lock the rear wheels to prevent from
moving.

Half braking – used for slowing, no clutch is used. Half braking is making the
brake bite.
Full braking – used for stopping completely with use of clutch.

Brake pedal location

When the car is parked, the parking brake is applied by just pulling the
hand brake handle. Use only the right hand when applying the hand brakes.

11
Handbrake is applied when parking (Pull only)
Before moving the car, depressed the brake pedal first to prevent from
moving. It is recommended to do this a habit in both manual or automatic car.
Press the release button located at the tip and at the same time pull slightly
the hand brake handle.

Releasing handbrake (Pull-press-down)
