Module 7
(SELECT MEASURING INSTRUMENTS)
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active
learner.
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of the
module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer What I Know before moving on to the other activities
included in the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate
to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you are not alone.
We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning and gain
deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!
Table of Contents
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to
help you to select measuring instruments in the field of Technical Drafting.
The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different learning
situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of
students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the
course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to correspond
with the textbook you are now using.

LO 1 - Select measuring instruments
What’s In
Last lesson, you have learned about on how to maintain hand tools, drawing
instruments, equipment and paraphernalia. You have done also the different tasks
given for you. This time you will be familiarized with the different and proper
selection of measuring instruments best suited for your works or jobs.
What’s New
2. Triangles are used for drawing vertical and oblique lines. They are
usually made of celluloid or plastic and come in various sizes. The
most commonly used triangles are the 45 and the 30x 60.
Illustrations below show the proper use of drawing lines and
measuring angles using the T-square and triangle .
TRIANGLE
4
3. Ruler is the most popular type of measuring tool. It is usually 6 or 12
inches in length. It is needed for measuring sizes and distances.
TRIANGULAR SCALE
PROTRACTOR
5
Figure below can be measured and drawn using a protractor.
7. Compass is used to draw circles, arcs, radii, and parts of many symbols.
COMPASS
6
8. Divider is similar to the compass in construction. As the name implies,
divider is used for dividing distances into a number of equal parts by the trial-
and-error method.
DIVIDERS
Tools will last longer when properly kept and maintained. A good
worker or draftsman keeps and takes care of these tools. The following are
some pointers:

8. Report defective measuring tools and any hazard to instructor
immediately.
What’s More
Now that you are already familiar with the different measuring
instruments best suited for your works or jobs, you can now perform the given
activity below.
Activity 1: Who am I!
Directions: Tell whether the things shown below are measuring instruments
or not. Write M if it is a measuring instrument and NM if it is not. Write your
answer in your TLE-Technical Drafting Activity notebook.
