This is an Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) module on Preparing Surface for Sealant/
Adhesive. Education aims to develop learners to become fully functional and literate
individuals.
This Module is an exploratory and introductory course which leads you to
Automotive Servicing National Certificate Level I (NC I). It covers basic and common
competencies that a Grade 7 Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE)/ Technical
Vocational Education (TVE) student like you could know how prepare surfaces for sealant/
adhesive.
This is designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.

What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to
help you master the nature of Technical and Livelihood Education, in the field
of Automotive. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many
different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse
vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard
sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be
changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

After reading this module, the learners should be able to:

 Identify surface materials as per construction.
 Clean The surface free from moisture, dust, and other foreign objects
to ensure maximum adhesion or seal.

1
What I Know

Let us determine how much you already know about planning and
preparing for the task to be undertaken. Take this test .

MULTIPLE CHOICE.
DIRECTIONS: Choose the letter of your best answer. Write your answers on
your TLE – Automotive Servicing Activity Notebook.

1. When using sealant/ adhesive, what are the things you should do first?
A. don’t use PPE’s C. read the warnings & instruction
B. use it right away D. apply the sealant/ adhesive anywhere
2. What will you do if sealant/ adhesive gets into your skin,?
A. use PPE’s C. don’t mind it
B. call a doctor D. wash it with soap and water
3. This step will help you to improve adhesion to any substrate in applying
sealant/ adhesive.
A. painting C. sanding
B. priming D. tooling
4. To obtain full adhesion, the sealant must have _____.
A. wet surface C. rough surface
B. oily surface D. clean-dry and frost-free surface
5. It forces the sealant against the back-up material and the joint surface.
A. cleaning C. shooting
B. priming D. tooling

PREPARE SURFACE FOR SEALANT/ADHESIVE

SAFETY TIPS

Make sure you read any warnings on the packaging of the glues or
sealants; otherwise you may damage the component you are working on.

Many products must be used only in a well-ventilated area, don't ignore

this warning because the fumes they give off are often enough to make you
pass out.

Some types of adhesive can cause considerable irritation if they come

into contact with your skin, so wear gloves when handling them. If an
adhesive does come into contact with your skin, you can usually wash it off
with soap and water. If you get any in your eyes, wash the affected area with
large amounts of water, and seek medical assistance right away.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Four basic steps for sealant preparation

Clean the mating surface to

free from dust, water and any
foreign objects that could affect
the performance of
sealant/adhesive.

Cleaning is the key to good

sealant adhesion.

5
Prime the mating surface to
ensure and improve adhesion.

It is critical that the sealant fills

the entire joint or cavity and
firmly contacts all surfaces
intended to receive sealant. If
the joint is improperly filled,
good adhesion will not be
achieved, and sealant
performance will be weakened.

Use proper tool to forces the

sealant against the back-up
material and the joint
surfaces.

Aside from cleaning and priming, there are some factors that can affect
the bond strength application of sealant/ adhesive.
 SURFACE TYPE

Not all adhesive will work on every

surface. It is very important to know
what kind of surface you are going
to use, so that you can select the
proper adhesive/sealant.

6
 TEMPERATURE

Temperature can also affect the

performance of the adhesive/
sealant when applying it to the
surface. check first the room
temperature for a nice and smooth
application result.

 ADHERENCE STRENGTH/TACK

Hot melt adhesives are softened

repeatedly by heat, or set by cooling,
which allows for repositioning during
assembly. Often, removable adhesives
are used as positioning aids during
product build.

What’s More

Activity 3 : Tell Me Why?

What are the factors that can affect the bonding strength application of
sealant and adhesive? Write your answer in your TLE – Automotive Activity

DIRECTIONS: Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if the
statement is wrong. Write your answer in your TLE – Automotive Activity
Notebook.

_______1. Cleaning is the key to a good adhesion.

_______2. By priming, it improves adhesion to any surface.

_______3. Temperature can’t affect the strength bond of sealant

application.

_______4. When preparing surface for sealant/ adhesive PPE’s are not
required.

_______5. You can apply sealant/ adhesive directly without priming the
surface.

Test II. ENUMERATION. Write your answers in your TLE – Automotive

Activity Notebook.

DIRECTIONS: Using the following materials given below, prepare a surface
for sealant/adhesive application. Paste your output in your TLE – Automotive
Activity notebook.

Materials needed:

 Piece of a recycled G.I. plain sheet (2” x 2”)

Note: Ask help from your Parents/Guardian in cutting the G.I
plain sheet to avoid accidents.
 Piece of plastic (2” x 2”) (example: Plastic Gallons, recycled
Engine Oil Bottle (Yamaha, Havoline, Castrol)
