What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
master the nature of Technical and Livelihood Education, in the field of Automotive.
The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different learning situations.
The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons
are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which
you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

After reading this module, the learners should be able to:

● Select sealant/adhesive in line with job requirements and manufacturer’s

specifications

● Perform sealant/adhesive checking to ensure the product is fit for use

Lesson Identify Appropriate

4
1 Sealant/Adhesive

What is It

IDENTIFY APPROPRIATE SEALANT/ADHESIVE

You do not always need to replace a component that is worn, damaged, or

broken. There is an increasingly wide range of sealants and adhesives in-car
accessory shops that allow you to make satisfactory repairs, thus saving the cost of
buying a new component.
A vast range of sealants and adhesives are available for repairing many
different components in your car. Plastics, wood, rubber, glass, and metals can all be
repaired using adhesives. Sealants can be used to waterproof weather seals around
windows, while cracks in metal casings can be sealed with a special putty adhesive.

What is an Adhesive? What is Sealant? How do they Differ?

Adhesives and sealants are often lumped together, as they were versions of
the same product with the same function. But they’re not. Adhesive and sealants are
different.

ADHESIVE
An adhesive is a material that joins two surfaces together by bonding them. It
is usually applied as a thin layer between two surfaces.
STRUCTURE OF ADHESIVE JOINT

Surface 1 - Metal Surface 1 - Glass

Surface 2 - Metal Surface 2 - Metal

To meet the performance need of a particular application, two factors are Important:

5
● Adhesion - is the bonding of one material to another, namely an

adhesive to a substrate, due to a variety of possible interactions. If the

product will not adhere to one of the surfaces, then the materials cannot
be joined.

● Cohesion - is defined as the internal strength of an adhesive as a result

of a variety of interactions within the adhesive.

Surface 1

Surface 2

SEALANT
A Sealant is a material designed only to fill up spaces. It can be joints, gaps,
or cavities that occur in two surfaces.
Some examples:

● The space between cylinder head and cylinder block.

● The space between the car windshield frame and the windshield (glass).

The Sealant is not there to hold the two materials together but it is used to seal
against the entry of:

Liquids – like rain passing Gas – like air or wind that could
through a window. come in through the gaps between
frame and glass.

Dust – like metal dust and sand

from the dirt.

6
TYPES AND USES OF SEALANT
Basic sealants are classified into three general categories—pliable, drying,
and curing.

Pliable Sealants
Pliable sealants are referred to as one-part
sealants and are supplied "ready for use" as
packaged. They are solids and change very little
during or after application.

Drying Sealants
Drying sealants set and cured by evaporation of
the solvent. Solvents are used in these sealants
to provide the desired application consistency.

Curing Sealants
Catalyst-cured sealants have an advantage over-
drying sealants because they are transformed
from a fluid or semi-fluid state into a solid by
chemical reaction rather than by evaporation of a
solvent. A chemical catalyst or accelerator is
added and mixed just before sealant applications.

TYPES OF GASKET SEALANT

Silicone Sealants. Silicone (or formed-in-place) gaskets are liquid sealant

applied directly to mating surfaces and allowed to cure in place.

7
Anaerobic Sealants
These materials are used for thread locking as well as gasketing. They are
mostly used to hold sleeves, bearings, and locking screw nuts in places subject to
much vibration.

Anti-seize compounds
Prevent dissimilar metals from
reacting with one another and seizing.
This material is used on many
fasteners, especially those used with
aluminum parts. Always follow the
manufacturer’s recommendations when
using this compound.

What’s More

8
Activity 3: Job Well Done!

DIRECTIONS: Identify what material is going to be used in the following task. Tell
whether you will use ADHESIVE or SEALANT. Write your answers in your TLE –
Automotive Servicing activity notebook.

4. Applying silicone on the cylinder head
5. Applying epoxy on the wood joints

5. Sealant is a material designed only to fill up spaces. It can be joints, gaps,
or cavities that occur in two surfaces.

B. Give at least 5 examples of situations where sealant and adhesive can be

applied or used.

Additional Activities

Activity 5: Think and Paste.

DIRECTION: Show one (1) example of a situation where you can apply
sealant/adhesive at home. Take one (1) “Selfie” picture of yourself applying this
situation. Print your picture in a 3R size (3.5 in x 5 in) and paste your photo in your
