Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear
learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities,
questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you
to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you
step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in

each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this
module or if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for
better understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to
answer the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided
for each activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are
also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on
how they can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on
any part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the
exercises and tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing
each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in

answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher
or facilitator.

Thank you.

A verb is a word that expresses action. It is an action word in a sentence

that tells or describe what the subject is doing.

Example: Filipino people fought against the Spaniards.

Example: They gave honor to their country.

verb
Verbs can be regular or irregular. Regular verbs are action verbs that
needed to add -d or -ed to the base form of the verb to form their past tense and
past participle. Irregular verbs, on the other hand, are action verbs that DO NOT
need to add -d or -ed to the base form of the verb to form their past tense and past
participle, but rather, change the spelling.

Below are some examples of verbs:

Simple Past Form of the Verb

We use Simple Past Tense to talk about actions that happened at a specific
time in the past.
Uses of Simple Past Tense

1. Past actions that are now finished

The first use of the simple past is to express actions that happened at a specific
time in the past.
Example: Spanish missionaries introduced Catholic beliefs in many parts of
the country.
2. Situation in the past
Another use of this tense is to talk about situations in the past.
Example: During the early period, Filipinos haunted animals for food.
(Nowadays, Filipinos are no longer haunting animals for food.)
3. A series of action in the past
The simple past tense can also be used with a few actions in the past happening
one after another.
Example: Early Filipinos established their own civilizations and lived on their
own.

(Source: English 7 Learner’s Material, Third Quarter “Simple Past Form of the Verb.” P.310)

Past Perfect Tense

We use Part Perfect Tense to express past actions that took place before
another past action occurred. It is formed by adding had + past participle of the
main verb.
The time expression is a clause beginning with when or before. The verb in
the time clause is in the simple past tense.

past perfect simple past

Examples:

Philippine culture had already flourished before the Spaniards arrived.

time clause

past perfect simple past

Filipino people had fought for freedom when Spaniards suppressed their liberty.

time clause

Moreover, we use past perfect tense when we talk about a completed action
in the past. It emphasizes a duration of a completed action that occurred in the
past.

Examples: Filipino had suffered cruelty in the hands of the Spaniards for more
than 300 years.

4 LU_Q1_English7_Module4
They had sought for freedom since the Spanish tyranny began.

After many people had sacrificed their lives, our country gained
independence.
