Abstract

In the year 2019, Coronavirus pandemic began to spread all over the world. The
Philippines was affected by this problem, as cases continued to rise public establishments like
malls, churches, and schools were forced to close for a while. On October 5, 2020, the school
year 2020-2021 began transitioning from traditional face-to-face classes to online distance
learning to be able to continue the academic year amidst the pandemic. The online setup
negatively affected the students’ view of Mathematics, that is why the researchers created
“Electronic System Assistance for Grade 10 Mathematics of Rizal National Science High
School” to help students gain confidence in their lessons. The respondents of this study were
20 students from Grade 10 of Rizal National Science High School that were selected through
the purposive sampling method. Based on the results of the study, the ESA website has an
overall mean of 4.65 in terms of website’s accessibility, 4.7 for website’s reliability, 4.6 for
website on the understanding of Mathematics which are all Highly Acceptable. In addition,
there is significant difference between the mean scores of the pretest before the website was
introduced and the post-test after the website was introduced to the respondents since the t
Stat value of 5.08 is greater than the t critical value of 2.09. Furthermore, since the students
have different learning journey and learning style, the website system with its range of options
and resources can be personalized in many ways. It is the best way to create a perfect
learning environment suited to the needs of each student.

Context and Rationale

Everyone has a part to play in enhancing the quality of education, including parents,

teachers, schools, and the government. The opportunity to contribute to the students' growth

while ensuring the greatest level of learning is a privilege for all teachers. A quality education

is one that emphasizes academic excellence, honor, and integrity. It is not solely based on

books, but on holistic learning which will help students the become globally competent and

competitive.

The global COVID-19 infection spread rapidly, affecting almost every country and

jurisdiction. The World Health Organization first confirmed on December 31, 2019, that it had

received notification of its first positive case in Wuhan City, China. Severe Acute Respiratory

Syndrome, or SARScov-2, is the reason for the coronavirus discovered in the area. According

to reports, it spreads quickly, the world have increased in a short period of time (Yang et al.,

2020).

Due to the high transmission rate of the virus safety measure cannot fully control how

fast it spread, the number of cases from the Philippines has gradually increased, with Google

News reporting that as of March 1, 2022 there are 3.66 million confirmed covid positive patients

in the Philippines, with a total of 437 million worldwide. Because of this the majority of

establishments worldwide, including churches, recreational convention centers, and

educational institutions, cease operations becoming education, one of the biggest sectors

affected by the pandemic.

Considering the vulnerability of children below 18 years old, the opening of schools is

not the top priority for operation during the peak of the pandemic. More than 200 countries fully

and partially closed their education system from March 11, 2020, to February 2, 2021. This is

almost a year without education for the children (UNICEF, 2020).

On September 20, 2020, the Department of Education announced that 748 of the

14,435 private educational institutions that opened the prior academic year had suspended

operational processes for the class of 2020 to 2021, affecting 3,233 teachers and 40,345

students. The majority of those that had suspended operations were in Central Luzon, with

141 schools. CALABARZON came in second with 121, Metro Manila came in third with 96,

Western Visayas came in third with 90, and Bicol Region came in fourth with 46 (CNN

Philippines, 2020).

Moreover, the Department of Education reported that during the height of the

pandemic, approximately 4 million students did not enroll for the school year 2020-2021, and

the total enrollment rate is only 83.1 percent, indicating that many students stopped their

education during the pandemic (CNN Philippines, 2020).

Under the 1987 Constitution of the Philippines, Article 14, Section 1, states that

“The State shall protect and promote all citizens' right to


quality education at all levels and shall take all necessary
steps to make such education available to all.”

The Department of Education faced a challenging decision about how to provide the

quality of education that each student deserves in this pandemic, given that face-to-face

classes are not permitted due to the possibility of virus transmission. The institution’s academic

calendar also changed from June being the opening of classes to October being the new

opening of classes.

On October 5, Education Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones formally opened the

school year 2020-2021, considering that face to face classes is not accessible to all especially

for areas with a high number of COVID-19 cases, the opening of classes indicated the formal

transition of the Philippine education system from traditional to online distance learning

(Department of Education, 2020).

The education system has been one of the sectors that the pandemic greatly hit. To

cope with the changes, one of the new learning modalities is online distance learning. Online

learning is an education that takes place online and involves utilizing gadgets, and access to

the internet (Stern, n.d.). Unfortunately, not every student can adapt to the needs of online

learning as the most common difficulties are an unstable internet connection, inadequate

learning resources, and poor communication (Michelle, 2021).

Moreover, this corresponds with the study of Rotas & Cahapay (2020), indicating that

vague learning contents and limited teacher scaffolds affect the learning experience of the

students. Some of the topics and activities of the module were difficult to understand as its

content is based on the traditional learning system. Due to limited teacher scaffolds, the

communication between the mentors and the students is poor. It is also stated that the problem

could be affiliated with the fact that some school institutions do not have proper e-learning

operations to assist the students with online materials such as lectures and books.

Consequently, Mathematics is one of the subjects facing difficulty in elaborating

concepts during online distance learning. By definition, Mathematics is a science that deals

with geometrical figures, logical reasoning, and systematic calculation that can be used to

decipher and facilitate understanding of a variety of phenomena in the environment (Ziegler &

Loos, 2017). It is an effective instrument to acquire knowledge, formulate conjectures, and

represent facts, thus, the language used in this field is distinct and should be explained in

precise detail (Moreno-Guerrero et.al., 2020).

Online learning has negatively impacted students' perception of Mathematics. Students

express uncertainties and doubts about their mathematics skills as they cannot expound ideas

and are unable to engage in learning efficiently (Bringula et al., 2021; Ginting 2021). In addition,

a study by Ariyanti & Santoso (2020), discovered that the average of students’ positive

responses in learning mathematics and learning outcomes before online learning was greater

than after experiencing the new modality.

As a result, the researchers created a website to assist the students, specifically for the

Grade 10 level as they will have a challenging transition from Junior High School to Senior

High School. A website is a collection of worldwide web pages containing information that

people can easily access with the use of the internet (Website, n.d.). The website is composed

of video lectures, instructions, and tests.

Integrating websites in learning increases clarity of explanation, student motivation, and

interactive methods to disseminate information for better discussion It also allows students to

learn at their own pace as whenever they are struggling with a mathematical problem, they

can easily access articles, video tutorials, and materials on one platform (Alabdulaziz, 2021).

Moreover, in a study by Cortez (2020), 76% of 342 students stated that they learn best and

gained a significant amount of knowledge through watching video tutorials.

Effective learning results from successful teaching. If the students apply what they learn

in the lessons, they already understand the learning process and discover a new method of

learning.

Innovation, Intervention and Strategy

The researchers aimed to develop an efficient and accessible Mathematics website to

assist the Grade 10 Students of Rizal National Science High School. The website contains

video lectures on the topics under the Grade 10 Mathematics subject, written instructions for

the detailed explanation of the competencies, and exercises to test the knowledge of the

learners. In this way, students can get access to one educational platform and will not have a

hard time searching multiple sites to look for topics and example word problems.

Along with this, the study provided easy navigation on the website as it is convenient

for the students to locate the learning materials and will feel at ease gaining new knowledge

from the platform. It can prevent confusion and will put the students in comfort while learning

Mathematics.

Moreover, by using the website, the researchers also wanted to improve the

Mathematical skills of the students. The detailed explanation of the instructions for word

problems and descriptive video lectures are adequate tools for the students to improve their

skills. In addition, administering pre-test and post-test to assess the knowledge the students

gain from utilizing the website.

Likewise, the contents utilized on the website are from reliable resources and

authorized authors of Mathematics. The researchers solely used learning materials that are

evidence-based and factual to prove its efficiency among students and avoid misconceptions.

Furthermore, the researchers hoped that the develop website will really help the

students and teachers make their teaching and learning process more enjoyable, appropriate,

and transparent. Utilizing an educational platform as a pedagogical method while discussing,

can help the teachers to engage the students in learning and provide them with sources that

can practice their knowledge. It can serve as a support and assistance to conveniently explain

concepts and ideas in Mathematics in a detailed way.

Action Research Questions

This study aims to develop a website that will assist grade 10 students with their

Mathematics subject. Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. How effective is the website to the Grade 10 students of Rizal National Science High

School in terms of:

1.1 Accessibility;

1.2 Reliability; and

1.3 Influence in Mathematics Understanding?

2. What are the students’ average pre-test and post-test results before and after the

website?

3. Is there a significant difference between before and after utilizing the website in the

level of understanding of the Grade 10 students in Mathematics?

Action Research Methods

Participants and/or Sources of Data

The research study dealt with the development of a website that will assist grade 10

students in Mathematics. This will be conducted at Rizal National Science High School among

Grade 10 students who served as the respondents. The researchers created a website that

contains video lectures, written instructions, and a 15 item multiple-choice pretest-posttest

about Grade 10 Mathematics from the first and second quarters. The contents of the website

were validated by 6 Mathematics mentors. This study was conducted March 2022.

Grade 10 students were selected using Purposive Sampling. This method was used

to get 20 respondents, 5 students from 4 sections of the Grade 10 namely Fortitude, Humility,

Patience, and Perseverance.

Moreover, this aims to provide students with another way to practice their skills in

computation in the convenience of their homes.

Data Gathering Methods

The researchers formulated a questionnaire checklist, which was validated by six (6)

math teachers from Rizal National Science High School for the accessibility, reliability, and

content of the electronic system assistance. The electronic system assistance was evaluated

by the teachers using the following scale:

For the pretest and posttest, the researcher gave the selected respondents a 15 item

multiple-choice type of test and the data gathered from the student was analyzed using the t-

test.

Data Analysis Plan

This study used several statistical treatments to interpret and analyze the data that was

gathered from the pre-test and post-test through the Google forms platform found by the

respondents on the forepart and last part of the website. The following statistical treatments

are used:

To determine the average of the pretest, posttest, and survey questionnaire answered

by the respondents, mean will be used.

To determine the significant difference on the level of performance of the respondents

before and after their exposure to various collaborative learning activities as revealed by the

pretest and posttest results, dependent t - test will be used.

During the pandemic, accessibility to education was one of the major concerns that's

why many schools and the Department of Education adopted online learning where usage of

websites and different learning materials online is possible. According to Dinc, 2017, a well-

designed and organized website is needed especially if this is an educational website since It

is useful for all students pursuing educational degrees, teachers assessing students'

understanding, and academics to determine what other people think about education.

Based on the results of the study, the ESA website has an overall mean of 4.65 with a

verbal interpretation of Highly Acceptable which means that the website’s accessibility

received a high percentage of a score, therefore, it can be classified as a well-organized and

well-designed website that can easily navigate by the users helping them to focus more on

the content rather than thinking how to manage the website.

Another indicator of a good website is when it is credible enough to provide its users

with information and knowledge. Nowadays, it is difficult to find trustworthy websites because

the internet is a major source of misinformation and fake news. A website can be trusted if it

has been validated by appropriate academic authorities. Educational sites that offer these

services not only benefit themselves but also the educational community around the world by

providing appropriate educational tools and reliable information even online (Jones, 2016).

After going through the treatment, the website’s reliability gained an overall mean of 4.7 with

a verbal interpretation of Highly Acceptable which suggests that the website created by the

researchers fits the quality of a site that can be trusted by the users. The ESA website was

also proven to be a competent educational website since it contains information that is

validated by an expert and contents based on the learning competencies of the Department

of Education.

The table above shows the influence of the website on the understanding of

Mathematics of Grade 10 students of RNSHS resulting in an overall mean of 4.6 with a verbal

interpretation of Highly Acceptable.

This result corresponds with the study of Guzeller & Akın (2012), wherein they found

out that Web-based Mathematics Instruction (WBMI) improved the self-efficacy, cognitive

skills, and mathematical performance of the students as they have the opportunity to learn at

their own pace. The said intervention provided a positive impact on the understanding and

perception of the students when it comes to Mathematics.

The data implies that ESA helped the Grade 10 students gain new knowledge and

deepen their understanding of Mathematics as the website encapsulates video tutorials and

written instructions relevant to expanding and practicing their logical thinking in the said

subject.

The table shows that 9.9 was the mean score between the pretest and 11 was the

average score between the post-test results. Since the t Stat value of 5.08 is greater than the

t Critical value of 2.09, we can say that there is significant difference between the mean scores

of the pretest before the website was introduced and the post-test after the website was

introduced to the respondents.

In accordance with the study of Setyaningrum (2018), web-based learning could

increase the students' engagement and self-adaptive learning in Mathematics. The study

showed the efficiency of blended learning through a website to classroom lectures on the

students' conceptual understanding of Mathematics. However, there are still several

challenges and factors that students experience in prolonging motivation to learn online.

Reflection

The new normal in education is the increase used of website and other learning tools.

Online learning as teaching method has its own set of positive and negative aspects. For

teachers decoding and understanding these positive and negative aspects will help institutes

in creating strategies for more efficiently delivering the lessons and as well as ensuring a

continuous learning journey for students.

Not only the teachers and students play a significant role in this set-up but also the

parents as well particularly in the area of Mathematics. Having a habit of self-paced learning

is highly desirable discipline as teachers have to sustain the positive mathematics self-concept

of online learners, assuring the students that online consultations are available when needed

so as the parents can have asked the feedback to the teachers if their children performs well.

Teachers are able to become more efficient educators by extending the lesson plan

beyond traditional textbooks to include online resources such as videos, PowerPoint slide

podcasts to mention a few.

Furthermore, since the students have different learning journey and learning style, the

website system with its range of options and resources can be personalized in many ways. It

is the best way to create a perfect learning environment suited to the needs of each student.
