Activity no. 1
Investigating Inertia

Objective:
Demonstrate Newton’s first law of motion.

Materials:
10 five-peso coins
Cardboard
Empty glass/cup
Ruler

Procedure:
A. Coin Drop
1. Place the cardboard on top of the glass/cup.
2. Place the coin at the center of the cardboard.
3. Slowly pull the cardboard with your hand and observe what happens.
4. Arrange again the setup as shown. This time, quickly flick the cardboard with
your finger. Observe again what happens.
5. Rearrange the set up. Now put 3 pcs of 5-peso coins on the cardboard.
Repeat step 4.
6. Rearrange the set up. Lastly, put 5 pcs of 5-peso coins on the cardboard.
Repeat step 4.
Questions:
A.1. What happened when you slowly pulled the cardboard? Explain.
A.2. What happened when you flicked the cardboard? Explain.
A.3. What do you think were the factors that affected the result of the
experiment? Why do you think so?
B. Coin Tower
1. Pile up 10 pieces of five-peso coins.
2. Tap the bottom of the coin as quickly as you can with a ruler. Observe what
happens.
Questions:
B.1. What happened when you hit the coin at the bottom?
B.2. What happened to the other coins stacked? Why is this so?
Observations:
A. Coin Drop
A.1.When I slowly moved the cardboard, the coin starts moving with the
cardboard but just stayed at the same position and the cup stayed in place.
A.2. When I flicked the cardboard, the coin slightly moved but the cup stayed
rest. When there’s three and 5 pcs of 5 pesos stacked, the tower fell down.
A.3. I think the factors that affected the experiment is that when you slightly
moved the cardboard, the coin is much more likely to stay stationary because
there is a lack of speed or force to change the position of the coin, and when
stacked it is most likely to move due to involvement of different other factors li
B. Coin Tower
B.1. When I hit the coin at the bottom, the coin is knocked out of the coin tower.
B.2. When I hit the coin at the bottom, some stayed stationery but some fell due
to the lack of force to push the coin structure down.

Conclusion:
The conclusion of the experiment is that the stationary object will not move or move in
constant velocity in a straight line until it’s acted by an external net or unbalanced force.
If we push or pull the stationary object or the coin, the object will move but if we are
moving the object under the stationary object or the cardboard, the coin will stay
stationary. If you flick the cardboard, the amount of force knocked the coin/s, while
slowly moving, stays stationary.
