SPACE & TELECOMMUNICATION LAWS

The man's small step on moon is indeed proving a giant leap for mankind as predicted by Neil Armstrong in
About the Programme 1969 where human kind has explored the universe abundantly and still to explore the much in Universe. The
everyday discovery of truth in outer space has many implications on mankind. The continuous development in space exploration leads to
rapid developments in science, technology and indeed in communication sector which has changed the human relations. This development
however, came with many problems finding legal solutions to protect and regulate the international relations. Hence today, the space law has
become one of the important branches of international law.
The M.A. (Space & Telecommunication Laws) aims towards offering the knowledge of legal regime governing outer space bodies including
moon and other celestial bodies, its implication on science, technology and communication and examining its practical implications.

MARITIME LAWS

India has a rich history in dealing with sea trade as well as a variety of trading and non-trading practices via sea
About the Programme within and beyond the confines of the country. Hence it has built up a magnificent maritime history and traditions for
several decades even much before the rise of European maritime powers. However, it experienced decline while the western and European
nations advanced during the Industrial Revolution.
At present, among all Asian and African countries, India has one of the largest and considerably well-coordinated merchant shipping fleet with
almost ninety percent of the country's trade volume moved by sea. With one of the largest coastline and having boundary as sea/ocean, guarding
the country through coast also gains importance.
In short trade and security through the ocean is prominent in India. Hence from past decades we have laws governing trade and security but with
change in circumstances, updation and research on emerging areas is required. With the emergence of new areas and concepts in maritime
field, the requirement for research and analysis is significant. Hence, this course aims to educate in these new emerging areas.

INTERNATIONAL TAXATION

The unprecedented proliferation of cross border transactions in a globalised and technically advanced world order
About the Programme essentially meant increased presence of entities doing business on foreign soil. While such transcending of
political borders and even physical market places has brought opportunities and sources of tax revenues in the home country as well as the host
country, it also poses its own set of challenges. Both domestic tax laws and DTAA regimes situated in the 'brick and mortar' model of doing
business are found to be inadequate to capture the eccentric market players of the digital economy. An already existing problem further deepens
with the on-going undercurrents between the Global North and South attempts to re-configure the existing principles and arrangements of
international taxation.
Consequentially Double Tax Avoidance Agreements assume criticality in present time taxation scene for more reasons than just avoiding double-
taxation. Today any understanding of the law and practice of domestic tax law is incomplete without appreciating the implications of DTAA. This
programme offers a thorough comprehension of the international taxation and in-depth understanding of the related concepts and controversies
of high relevance be it for policy, practice or academics.

ANIMAL PROTECTION LAWS

About the Programme Animals for all intents and purposes have been seen as means to an end without any consideration or value
unto themselves. However, current events unfolding across the world reiterate how closely the welfare of all
living beings is interconnected. An anthropocentric approach to law, society and governance is not effective and the repercussions of such a
system have devastating effects on the environment, public health, human rights and animal life.
In order to build a more equitable world for all, we must examine how the legal system impacts welfare as a whole. Animal law is an imperative
area of learning for all individuals working in furtherance of a more just, compassionate and equitable country and world.
Through this program NALSAR aims to create experts, be it lawyers or other professionals in allied sectors. It caters to those who want to
specialize in theory and practice of animal laws in India and international law relevant to animal protection.

MEDIA LAWS

'Media' as a popular term includes information carriers in the print, broadcast and digital medium. In
About the Programme daily usage, this includes the dissemination and consumption of information through newspapers,
magazines, radio, television and the internet. Classically described as 'The Fourth Estate', the news
media is also described as a watchdog, informing the society about the actions of those in power and at the same time conveying the
views of the public at large to those who are at the helm of public affairs.
With the growth of the digital medium, the convergence of Information, Communication and Entertainment has led to the emergence of
phrases such as 'New Media'. While technology has enabled the publication of information to become much cheaper and almost
instantaneous, it has also thrown up numerous ethical questions arising out of the lack of editorial control and the very real dangers of
misinformation and disinformation reaching the masses. This poses serious challenges for the inherent tensions between respecting
the freedom of expression and maintaining public order. The continuous expansion of 'Social Media' has allowed individuals to express
their views and sentiments, but often at the cost of challenging existing boundaries of what is considered to be acceptable speech in
public.
This One-Year Advanced Diploma in Media Laws has been regularly updated to incorporate the latest developments in this field. It is
primarily directed at media professionals who are engaged in functions such as reporting, editing and advertising. It would also be of
interest for recent graduates and advanced students in law, journalism, political science and public policy. The resource-persons

ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION

About the Programme Disputes are a part of human association. Legally speaking, when one person makes a claim against
the other based on a certain law or legal principle, and the other person denies the claim, there is a
dispute.
The term Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) refers to a range of methods and processes of dispute resolution. Significantly, these
methods are very rapidly transforming from mere 'alternatives' into preferred methods of resolving disputes. The promise of ADR
methods is low cost, fast resolution and an outcome acceptable to both parties. Unfortunately, due to improper or ineffective use
these methods often fail to deliver on these promises.
Different ADR methods have their own nuances and require specialised knowledge and training. This course is designed to:
i. Equip the learner with an understanding of various ADR methods;
ii. Train the learner to choose from these methods, and use them in a manner which creates minimum stress on the parties –
in terms of both money and time; and
iii. Hopefully enable learners to pursue solutions acceptable to both sides in a legal dispute.
The course, consisting of four different subjects, is designed to give a holistic understanding of ADR methods.

FAMILY DISPUTE RESOLUTION

Modern ideologies and constitutions consider an individual as the focal point, but it is the family
About the Programme which enables an individual in more than many ways to survive and become an effective functional
unit. The stress and strain of modern day life, changing values in our lives, disintegration of the joint
family system and other factors are taking a toll on family relationships.
As a result, we are witnessing a sharp increase in marital conflicts and also in the number of cases being filed in courts of law for
dissolution of marriage, maintenance, custody of children, partition of joint family properties, etc. These cases take a considerable
time to be decided by the courts. In the meanwhile, the litigating parties have to put up with a lot of hardship and suffering, both
emotionally and financially.
In the western countries a number of trained marriage and family counsellors are available to provide counselling services to those
who are having marital maladjustment and family disputes. The time has now come for India too, to create professionally qualified
persons to resolve family disputes by using alternative methods of dispute settlements, which cause minimum stress on the parties in
terms of emotions, money and time and aim for a win -win situation for the parties. To fulfill this need, NALSAR University of Law,
Hyderabad has started this diploma course to create a pool of professionals who can offer expert advice and counsel the parties in
matters relating to family disputes.

About the Programme The phenomenal rise of corporations and the unprecedented growth in cross-border transactions
have proved to be both beneficial as well as challenging insofar as taxation is concerned. Whilst
corporate profits and the investments they bring to a jurisdiction make them highly lucrative taxable units for augmentation of public
revenue; their multi-jurisdictional presence and complex structure of holdings make them equally complicated subjects of tax laws. The
emergence of virtual world and digital economy has further deepened the challenges before the existing framework of domestic tax laws
and international taxation for an already elusive legal person that corporations are.
This programme aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of the law, policy and practice of corporate taxation and apply this
understanding to tax implications for companies throughout their life cycle from incorporation to winding up or restructuring. The
programme shall provide essential overview and a detailed and updated analysis the tax implications for domestic and foreign
corporations doing business in India. In the process, the programme will also be identifying opportunities of tax planning and side-
stepping likely controversies, being mindful of ongoing tax issues.

ANIMAL PROTECTION LAWS

About the Programme Human dependence on animals, in this vein, is a matter charted in history since civilization began,
with humans and a plethora of species adapting with each other to share a common space on the
planet. However, with the changes in development standards across the world, human choices and
incumbent behaviour have overlooked the impact it has on the environment and its dependent beings.
“Animal law," includes in its aegis the issues that affect humans and animals alike and enfolds the concepts of “animal welfare,” and
“animal rights.” One of the fastest growing fields of legal practice, animal law may involve issues of constitutional law, administrative
law, environmental law, consumer protection law, etc. The unifying factor within this field of practice is its underlying substance of the
matter which addresses the interests of animals themselves.
Through this program NALSAR aims to create lawyers catering and specializing in the legal aspects of animal laws in India, as well
as, internationally recognised laws. Our course participants would not only have a sound and strong foundation on legal and
jurisprudential patterns of animals rights and animal welfare issues but also will be well-equipped to handle practical and
contemporary aspects and challenges faced on the ground, with respect to cruelty towards animals, policy development and
litigation in ancillary matters regarding animals.
