SUBJECT: PROPOSED GUIDELINES FOR PAROL MAKING CONTEST AND CHRISTMAS TREE
DECORATIONS

Theme: "Sustainable Futures: Illuminate, Protect, Cultivate, Innovate, and Connect"

Guidelines and Mechanics for the Parol-Making Contest:

1. Eligibility:

The contest is open to students from five different departments in the university:

 College of Education and Senior high School


 College of Criminal Justice Education
 Provincial Institute of Fisheries
 School of Agriculture and Agribusiness
 Institute of Information and Communications Technology

with the help of their respective Deans.

2. Judging Criteria:
Creativity and Innovation: 30 points
Relevance to the Theme: 25 points
Craftsmanship and Attention to Detail: 20 points
Use of Recycled Materials: 15 points
Presentation and Overall Aesthetic: 10 points

3. Team Composition:
 Each team can consist of 5 to 10 members.
 Participants must belong to the same course.
 At least 4 entries per department.

4. Materials:
4.1. Participants are required to create a parol (traditional Filipino lantern) using ONLY recycled or
upcycled materials.
4.2. Materials can include but are not limited to old newspapers, plastic bottles, cardboard, scrap
metal, discarded electronic components, and any other recyclable materials.
4.3. Teams must ensure that their chosen materials are sourced ethically and adhere to environmental
regulations.

5. Parol Design:
 Participants are encouraged to be creative and innovative in their parol designs.
 Parols should incorporate the theme of sustainability and reuse/recycling.
 The use of LED lights or other sustainable lighting methods is highly encouraged to make the parols
visually appealing.
 Parol must be 3 feet in diameter, including the inner circle

6. Submission:
 Each team must submit a brief description of their parol design, including the materials used and the
inspiration behind it.
 Teams should also provide a list of the recycled materials they used.
 Date of Submission: on November 27, 2023 at Mini-Theater, Academic Building (Matusalem Old-
Site)

 Date of Judging: November 28, 2023 (Mini-Theater, Academic Building (Matusalem Old-Site)

7. Judging Panel:
 The judging panel will consist of ISU Roxas-Campus Administrator, Campus Architect and Guest
Judge (Mayor/Congressman/Governor)

8. Presentation:
 Each team will have an opportunity to present their parol to the judges.
 Teams should prepare a brief presentation explaining their design choices and the sustainable aspects
of their parol.

9. Prizes:
 Prizes will be awarded to the top three winning teams from each course.
 Prizes can include certificates, cash awards, and recognition.

10. Exhibition:
 The Champions’ Parol will be attached at the top of the 1st ever ISU-Roxas Christmas Tree.
 All parols will be displayed in a designated area on campus for a specified period, allowing students
and faculty to appreciate the creativity and sustainability of the designs.

11. Sustainability Promotion:


 As part of the event, there can be workshops or seminars on sustainability, recycling, and upcycling to
raise awareness among the university community.

12. Promotion and Documentation:

The university's Publication department can document the contest through photos, videos, and
articles to promote the importance of sustainability and creativity within the campus community.

This parol-making contest aims to foster creativity, environmental awareness, and teamwork
among students from different courses while promoting the concept of sustainability and responsible
resource use. It provides a platform for students to showcase their talents and innovative thinking in a
sustainable context.

Decoration for the 1st ISU Roxas - Christmas tree Lighting

Theme: "Sustainable Futures: Illuminate, Protect, Cultivate, Innovate, and Connect"

Guidelines:

 All University Courses need to participate and provide necessary décor for the Christmas Tree of ISU
Roxas to promote “Pagkaka-isa” in this year’s Christmas Tree Lighting.
 The school with provide the main Structure and general light of the Tree
 Decorations may compose of recycled materials that represent courses
 Each decoration should be 20 pcs-2 feet in diameter (main decors) and 30pcs-1 foot diameter for small
decors.

Course-Specific Themes:

College of Education and Senior high School- Illuminate:

Theme Description: Create Decoration/Lantern that symbolize the power of education to illuminate minds and
shape a brighter future. Use recycled materials to depict the transformative potential of learning and
knowledge.

College of Criminal Justice Education - Protect:

Theme Description: Design Decoration/Lantern that represent the importance of protecting our communities
and upholding justice. Incorporate recycled materials to showcase the role of law enforcement in safeguarding
society.

Provincial Institute of Fisheries - Cultivate:

Theme Description: Craft Decoration/Lantern that celebrate the sustainable cultivation of marine resources and
the preservation of aquatic ecosystems. Use recycled materials to convey the message of responsible fisheries
management.

School of Agriculture and Agribusiness - Innovate:

Theme Description: Develop Decoration/Lantern that highlight the innovative practices in agriculture and
agribusiness. Utilize recycled materials to symbolize the potential for sustainable farming and agri-
entrepreneurship.

Institute of Information and Communications Technology - Connect:

Theme Description: Construct Decoration/Lantern that emphasize the power of technology to connect people,
bridge gaps, and drive progress. Incorporate recycled materials to showcase the role of IT in fostering
connectivity and communication.

By incorporating recycled materials into their lantern designs, students from these diverse courses can
promote sustainability and environmental awareness while creatively expressing the themes relevant to their
fields of study. This contest theme encourages participants to think critically about their respective disciplines'
contributions to a more sustainable and interconnected world.
