PLATE NO. 4: Design of Chain Drives

Design a double roller chain to transmit 10hp from a

squirrel-cage motor, turning 1200 rpm to a circular saw,
the required speed ratio is and is used less than 8
hrs/day. Decide upon all the dimensions and parameter
for roller chain design (number of teeth, pitch, width of
chain, pitch diameter of sprocket, center distance,
length of chain, etc.) Identify the factor of safety against
fatigue failure with the chain pull as the force on the
chain. Include in the design a recommended shaft, and
key and their attachments.
NOMENCLATURE FOR CHAIN DRIVES:
N1 – Speed of the driver sprocket
N2 – Speed of the driven sprocket
V.R. – Velocity Ratio
Nsf – Service factor
T1 – Number of teeth for the driver sprocket
T2 – Number of teeth for the driven sprocket
p – Pitch of chain
PD – Pitch Diameter
Vm – Average velocity of the chain
