Kaizan Game

(September 22, 12.30 PM) Purpose

The Game is an exercise involving team work, leadership and communication. The aim of the exercise is to complete a given task in fastest time with minimal errors.

Instructions 1. The exercise will be played in a group of 44 participants. Each group would be under the charge of two Faculty Coordinators. 2. Each group is further divided into two teams A & B of 22 participants each. Every Team member would have a number, i.e. 1 to 22. 3. Team A would begin the exercise in an open space while Team B would sit in class. 4. Numbers 1 to 40 would be painted on pieces of square cardboard of 1 foot by 1 foot. These would be placed randomly inside a circle of around 20-25 feet diameter made by a rope. 5. The objective of the exercise is that each team has to touch all the numbers inside the circle as quickly as is possible. However, each participant cannot touch more than one number at a time inside the circle. Further, he/ she cannot touch a total of more than two numbers inside the circle. While he/she touches a number, no other participant can be inside the circle. The total time taken by the team in completing the exercise would be measured by the Coordinators. 6. Before the exercise, the Coordinators would brief the Team about the rules of the game. Not more than three questions can be asked by the Team to the Coordinators during the entire exercise, either prior to its commencement or during the rounds. 7. The Coordinators would look for any violations by the Team such as overlap by two participants inside the circle, or touching more than one number accidentally. At the end of the exercise, the Coordinator would ask the Team to declare its total violations suo moto for which 5 seconds would be added to its time per each violation. In case the team fails to declare or declare correctly, 10 seconds per violation would be added to their score. In the event of difference between the teams declaration and Coordinators number, the difference would be added @ 10 seconds per violation. 8. Each team would be allowed as many turns to improve their timing within the total of 15 minutes. The timing (inclusive of penalty) achieved by the team in each of the round would be noted by the Coordinators. In the given time, it is unlikely that any team would be in a position to take more than 3 chances. 9. After Team A has completed its exercise, they would go back to class and in 2 minutes every Team member would brief his/ her counterpart

of Team B about the exercise. Thereafter, Team B would come out and commence its exercise.

10. Upon completion of Team Bs exercise, the Coordinator/s would have a 10 minute debriefing session with all participants in class wherein they would ask them the reasons for their success/ failure, key learnings, etc. 11. The idea is to impress upon the participants the importance of working as a team, the emergence and need for leadership and the importance of effective communication. Material needed (per group)
A thick nylon rope of around 150 feet in length to make a circle Cardboard squares or circles with numbers 1 to 30 painted on them A score sheet A whistle Coordinator/s would use personal watch for noting the timing

Note: Material would be procured and provided by Trg 1 Section at the exercise locations.
