Acceleration PT1

1 Work out the value of acceleration for each bicycle. Use the equation:

v−u
a=
t
The arrow in the box above each diagram shows the direction in which the acceleration
is acting.
Add the missing arrows.

a b

u = 0 m/s v = 10 m/s u = 8 m/s v = 12 m/s

t=2s a = _____m/s2 t=4s a = _____

c d

u = 11 m/s v = 5 m/s u = 3 m/s v = 13 m/s

t=3s a = ____ m/s2 t=4s a = ____

2 Calculate the following accelerations.

a A car accelerates from rest to 50 m/s in 5 seconds.

b At the start of a race, a sprinter accelerates from rest to 10 m/s in 2 seconds.

c A plane flying at a steady speed of 100 m/s accelerates to 150 m/s in 10 seconds.

d At a set of traffic lights, a lorry slows down from 30 m/s to 0 m/s in 20 seconds.
e. A cyclist travelling at a steady speed of 20 m/s slows down to 5 m/s in 3 seconds
