Independent Work – The Chocolate War [Up until chapter 4 + 5 + 6] – BULLYING

Read chapters 5 – 6 and answer the questions in your notebooks:

Near the end of chapter 5 it says “The black box was his nemesis.”

1. What is the black box?

2. What does the word “nemesis” mean?
3. Where does the idea/concept of “nemesis” come from? [Look up the word on Wikipedia and read
the background]
4. Near the end of chapter 6 it says that Brother Leon claimed that “You turned this classroom into
Nazi Germany for a few minutes”. Describe the scene – what is Brother Leon talking about? Do
you agree with his claim?

*** It can be said that Brother Leon and Archie can be seen as bullies, Goober and Obie as
bystanders, and Goober and Jerry as victims.

 Write a short paragraph describing Nelson. Compare his character to Brother Leon’s
character so far. What are some similarities? Differences?

 In pairs or individually – prepare an online "poster" / scrap page, focusing on ONE of the
terms (bully, bystander, victim). What is the phenomenon? / Bring examples / Are there
types or levels? What are some possible causes of the phenomenon?
