About the Designer

Chris Hamamoto
GRAPHIC DESIGNER

Chris Hamamoto is a designer, developer, and educator

from the San Francisco Bay Area, now living in Seoul and
teaching at Seoul National University.
In addition to teaching, he pursues an independent
practice focused on how automation and algorithms
affect communication and aesthetics – a topic he
explores through graphic design, and software design.

Flag Generator: Future Flag Korea
FOR SEOUL INTER-KOREAN SUMMIT 2018
Flag Generator: Future Flag Korea speculates on the 2030 “re-unified”
Korean flag. Flags in 2030 will likely be immaterial and exist only
digitally, allowing the future Korea flag to be in a constant state of flux.
The new Korean flag will include graphic attributes of both North and
South Korean flags combined and recombined by an algorithm in
order to create a flag with no fixed form.

Flag Generator: Three Folds
FOR TYPOJANCHI 2017
A set of flags that responded to the topic of "body". A set of
flags who's form describe the flag folding patterns of
American, European, and Asian-based cultures and indicate
the motions the human body makes in response. The works
were exhibited simultaneously at Culture Station 284 in
Seoul, Korea and 019 Gallery in Ghent, Belgium.
 Dolby Art Series: Color to Sound
PRINT: 2018
This print is inspired by sound-to-color synesthesia, the
condition where heard sounds evoke an experience of color.
This print explores the perceptual illusions of color, applying
principles of Color Assimilation and Chromatic Contrast used in
many iconic works throughout the history of art, design, and
science. We aim to create to binary mis-perceptions of input
and reaction scenarios for the viewers to experience visual
disturbance and vibrations from different distances and
perspectives when viewing the print.

Flag Generator: Three Folds
FOR TYPOJANCHI 2017
Figma is the collaborative design tool. I worked on the core
product, and developed the brand language in collaboration with
the design team, engineers, and marketing between 2016-18.
During this time I redesigned the Figma website, art directed
photoshoots, designed promotional materials, and lead the brand
re-design that set the foundation for Figma's visual identity today.
On the product I worked on core features related to typography,
versioning, and drawing tools.
 The Unseen Garden

This website compiles a series of stock-image

timelapses displaying flowers blooming and
decaying with auto-generated captions added to
them by a custom-made program. Viewers can
