SEA STAR TO THE SKY STARS!

by Sujatha Jaishankar

Once upon a time, there was a little sea star. It lived on

a coral reef in the sea. The sunlight visited the reef and
kept the water warm. The reef was a lovely place and
the little sea star was happy to live there.

One night, the little sea star could not sleep. As it

looked up, it saw many, many twinkling dots! Twinkle,
twinkle, twinkling
away! So pretty!

The little sea star

had never seen any-
thing like them!

What are those twin-

kling dots? it asked
the seahorse.

Those are stars! replied the seahorse.

The little sea star was thrilled. Stars? Oh, they must be
related to me, thought the little sea star. After all, I am
a star too! A sea star!

The little sea star wanted so badly to visit the stars in

the sky and talk to them! It gazed up at the sky every
night sometimes they were there, winking and blinking
at it......but sometimes they stayed away too!

One day, the little sea star saw some drops of water
getting ready to change their form. It had never seen the
drops of water do that before!

‘Hey! What are you doing? I can hardly see you at all!’
said the little sea star.

‘We are changing into water vapour to float up into the

sky.’ said the drops of water.

‘Up into the sky!’ cried the sea star. ‘Can you take me
with you? I want to come too!’

‘Why?’ asked the water drops. ‘What for?’

‘I want to talk and play with the stars in the sky,’ said the
little sea star.

‘Sorry!’ replied the water drops. ‘You are too heavy! Be-
sides, you don’t belong in the air! Your home is in the
water!’

‘That’s not fair! Look at you! You are going up into the
sky....and you are here with me too!’ complained the
little sea star.

‘Well...we are special! We are water and we can change

form,’ replied the drops with a smile. ‘You are special too
little sea star! When you lose an arm, you can grow an-
other one in its place! Very few creatures can do that.’
‘But I cannot go up into the sky,’ muttered the little sea
star.

‘No you can’t do that,’ replied the water drops.

‘The little sea star became sad. I want to visit the stars
in the sky! I wish I could just talk to them!’ it said.

The water drops then had an idea. ‘We can take mes-
sages from you to the stars when we float up to the sky.
And when we return as rain, we will bring their messag-
es to you! We water drops keep going up and coming
down all the time! Would you like to send the stars a
message, little one?’

‘The little sea star was thrilled! Yes please! I would love
to do that!’

‘And it did just that! And now, it’s eagerly waiting for the
rains! It knows there will be a message from the stars in
the sky! Isnt that exciting?’

CHATTER CHATTERS!
by Sujatha Jaishankar

‘It’s the best birthday gift ever!’ said Deepti happi-

ly. ‘A real parrot! His name is Chatter! He can talk
too! He will repeat what he hears!’

Deepti was thrilled. She kept Chatters cage on

a table near a window in the living room, so he
could look out at the garden.

Deepti lived in a
big house with her
parents and grand-
mother. It had many
rooms. There was a
storeroom filled with
things no longer
needed or wanted.
Every now and then,
Maya cleaned the
room. Maya helped
mother with the
housework.

Deepti’s grandmother usually sat or rested in the

living room. Every time the door-bell rang, she
would call out, ‘Maya! Open the door!’

Chatter quickly learnt to repeat the words, ‘Maya!

Open the door!’

However, he didn’t learn anything else! It made

Deepti so annoyed! All Chatter said was,’ Maya!
Open the door!’

‘Silly parrot!’ Maya would grumble as she rushed to

open the front door to find no one there!

One Sunday afternoon, Maya was sitting in the

kitchen with a cup of tea. She had just cleaned the
storeroom and was very tired.

She left the door open for the floor to dry after
mopping. ‘I will close it once I’ve had my tea,’ she
thought.

Everyone but Deepti was resting. Deepti saw the

open store room and went inside. A stack of old
storybooks caught her eye and happily she sat
down and began reading them. Chatter with his
bright eyes watched her go inside.

A sudden gust of wind through the windows

slammed all open doors shut.

‘Maya! Open the door!’ screeched Chatter. ‘Maya!

Open the door!’

‘Quiet!’ scolded Maya. ‘Enough of this chatter!’ But

Chatter kept saying the same thing. He would not
stop.

‘Give that parrot a biscuit!’ said grandmother. ‘Will

he never stop?’

‘Chatter! Sssh!’ said mother. Then she told Maya

to give Deepti a glass of milk.

As Maya went to Deepti’s room, she gave Chatter

a biscuit. He didn’t even look at it.

Maya returned to the living room to say that Deep-

ti was not in her room.

‘Maya! Open the door!’ said Chatter. Maya ignored

Chatter.

‘Ma, do you know where Deepti is?’ asked Maya

keeping the glass on the table.

‘Maya! Open the door!’ said Chatter.

‘Chatter Sssh!’ said father. ‘Where is Deepti? Has

she gone out without telling us?’

‘Maya! Open the door!’ screeched Chatter.

‘Stop it Chatter!’ said mother. ‘Deepti won’t do

that. But I will check with our neighbor anyway.’
She headed out of the house.

‘Maya! Open the door!’ chattered Chatter. ‘Stop

that, you silly parrot!’ snapped grandmother. ‘This
is NOT the time to tease anyone with your silly
chatter!’

‘Maya! Open the door!’ screeched the parrot. Chat-

ter would not stop!

When mother returned with no Deepti, the worried

parents decided to search for her in their colony.

Maya picked up the glass of milk and headed to

the kitchen. As she went past the store room,
she noticed the door was shut. She had not shut
it! Probably the wind, she thought. Then another
thought occurred! Was Chatter trying to tell them
all something?

Maya quickly opened the door, and there fast

asleep on a broken chair was...... Deepti! At home.
She had been there all the time! She had been
locked in!

You can imagine how happy and relieved every-

one was! Chatter was a hero!

Deepti said, ‘It was not comfortable being locked

in that room. It must be the same for Chatter too,
to be locked in the cage. I want to set him free.’

Saying that Deepti opened the cage and Chatter

flew out into the trees!

Even now they can hear ‘Maya! Open the door!’

but now everyone smiles and enjoys Chatter’s
chatter!
