3RADIO TEACHER: Good afternoon young scientists of DepEd Tarlac Province.. (PAUSE)

4 Welcome to Aral TarlacHenyo here on RTV Tarlac Channel 26…

5(PAUSE) Simulcast over DZTC Radyo Pilipino Tarlac (PAUSE) I am Sir

6ROBIN B. HULIPAS your teacher broadcaster for Science Grade 8! (PAUSE).

7BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

8RADIO TEACHER: Be prepared to a new way of learning even at the comfort of your Homes

9 (PAUSE) Before we start, please do the following. (PAUSE) First, check your

10 headsets or speakers if they are functioning well so you could hear clearly this

11 broadcast. (PAUSE) Second, find a comfortable place to study away from

12 distractions. (PAUSE) Third, prepare your learning materials, your pen, science

13 activity notebook, and your science 8 Compendium of Notes. (PAUSE) Lastly, if

14 you have queries or questions feel free to send me a message. (PAUSE) My

15 cellphone number is 09999919005 and we will answer them at the end of our

16 discussion.

17BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

18RADIO TEACHER: I know all of you are ready now (PAUSE) Ok! Let us begin learning!

19BIZ: INSERT SFX (CUE IN: XXXXXX THEN CUE OUT: XXXXXX
1RADIO TEACHER: ( VIEW SLIDE 1 ) Before we start, let’s have first a short review of

2 previous lesson. (PAUSE) I have 4 questions for you . (PAUSE) Are you

3 ready ? Ok Let’s begin! (PAUSE) Question Number 1 : Whenever there is a

4 strong wind and heavy rainfall, we expect it as a typhoon or there is a typhoon

5 coming but what is really typhoon? (PAUSE) Correct ! Typhoon is a giant,

6 rotating storm that brings wind, rain and destruction. It is generally known as

7 tropical cyclone. (PAUSE) Typhoon is the term used in the countries located in

8 the Western North Pacific Ocean like our country, the Philippines.

9 Second question, where do typhoons form? (PAUSE) You are right!

10 Tropical cyclones or typhoons can only form over oceans of the world.

11 Question Number 3, What makes the Philippines so prone to typhoons?

12 (PAUSE) Very Good ! Philippines is located just above the equator, it lies

13 along the west Pacific basin (facing the western rim of the Pacific Ocean),

14 which is the world’s busiest typhoon belt.

15 Last question: How do landforms and bodies of water affect the impact of

16 typhoon in the Philippine Area of Responsibility? (PAUSE)Good Thinking! You

17 are learning a lot ! Landforms and bodies of water on and around the

18 Philippines affect the strength or weakness of typhoon. Landforms lessen the

19 strength of the typhoon whenever the winds strike land area, while warm water

20 from ocean provides strength and higher rainfall. ( END of SLIDE)

21BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

22RADIO TEACHER: ( VIEW SLIDE 2 ) If you were able to answer the two questions correctly, I

23 want you to tap your shoulder twice then say. GOOD JOB SELF! (PAUSE)

- more -
1 Congratulations! Do not forget these lessons for we will be needing them as we

2 go through more adventures in this class. (PAUSE) . I believe you are excited

3 for today’s lesson. Prepare yourselves as we take a leap in the new journey of

4 learning (PAUSE). After going through this learning session, you are expected

5 trace the path of typhoons that enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR)

6 using a map and tracking data.

7 Specifically, these are our learning objectives for today’s session, you

8 are expected to plot the Philippine Area of Responsibility given the latitude and

9 longitude; and lastly you are expected to explain what is meant when a typhoon

10 has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility. Are you ready? Great! ( END

11 of SLIDE)

12BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

13RADIO TEACHER: ( VIEW SLIDE 3 ) If you hear the names of Ernie Baron, Kuya Kim

14 Atienza, and Mang Tani, what comes to your mind? (PAUSE). You are right

15 ! All of them are radio and television presenter. They often used the term

16 PAR in their weather report. (PAUSE).

17 Now, to activate your prior knowledge of our lesson for today, I want you to

18 open your science compendium of notes and let’s answer the reflective

19 questions on page 25. (PAUSE). Are you ready? (PAUSE). Ok let’s begin

20 answering, For question number 1, What is PAR? (PAUSE). If your answer

21 is

22 Philippine Area of Responsibility, you are right! (PAUSE). PAR is one of the

23 three domains used by meteorologist in PAGASA. It is just an imaginary line

24 enclosing our country.

- more -
1 Question Number two, Why is there a need to track typhoon using PAR?

2 (PAUSE). Well done ! It helps forecasters and meteorologists to monitor

3 easily weather disturbances. (PAUSE) Furthermore, PAR serves as a

4 boundary in monitoring the formation, movement and track of tropical

5 cyclones. (PAUSE) Now, if your answers are similar with those cited

6 possible answers, Very Good ! Again, tap your shoulder twice then say

7 GOOD JOB SELF (PAUSE). ( END of SLIDE)

8BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

9RADIO TEACHER: ( VIEW SLIDE 4 ) Now, Let me check if you can still recall your previous

10 lesson on how to plot latitude and longitude if you want to locate places on

11 Earth. Let’s us do the activity entitled Bring back Memories, Bring Back… In

12 this activity, you should be able to recall prior knowledge on locating places.

13 Here is the directions, Identify the points (latitude and longitude) plotted on

14 the coordinate system using the globe. Write your answers on the table

15 provided for you. The first point letter A is identified for you, continue to

16 answer letter B,C,D and E. I will give you 1 minute to answer this activity.

17 ( END of SLIDE)

18BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

19RADIO TEACHER: TIME’S UP! ( VIEW SLIDE 5 ) How did you the find the Activity ? The

20 activity reminded you that there are two lines of geographical coordinates,

21 the latitudes and longitudes. Latitudes are imaginary lines running from West

22 to East (left to right) while longitudes are imaginary lines running from North

23 and South (top to bottom) on maps/globes. By giving a precise latitude and

- more -
1 longitude we can pinpoint the location of anything on the surface of the

2 Earth. ( END of SLIDE)

3BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

4RADIO TEACHER: ( VIEW SLIDE 6 ) A weather forecast predicts what the temperature and

5 atmospheric conditions will be in a country or in a specific place like Region

6 III in Central Luzon or here in Tarlac. When we get information ahead of

7 time, we can prepare for it. Being prepared helps us stay safe. PAGASA

8 starts monitoring tropical cyclones even before they enter the Philippine Area

9 of Responsibility .The international names change when tropical cyclones

10 enter the PAR, the state weather bureau assigns each Philippine typhoon

11 name in alphabetical order to determine the typhoons that have entered PAR

12 in a year. ( END of SLIDE)

13BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

14RADIO TEACHER ( VIEW SLIDE 7 ) In our next activity , using the Philippine map on page

15 24, the numbers running left side are latitude values and the numbers along

16 the bottom are longitude numbers. See if you can determine Philippine Area

17 of Responsibility using the latitude and longitude coordinate lines. In this

18 activity, you are expected to read map, given the latitude and longitude of a

19 tropical cyclone, tell if it has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility,

20 and explain what is meant when a typhoon has entered the Philippine Area

21 of Responsibility. Are you ready! Great! ( END of SLIDE)

22 BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

1RADIO TEACHER : In this activity, you will be needing the following materials. map of the

2 Philippines and vicinity, pencil or coloring pen. (PAUSE) Do you have the

3 materials already? (PAUSE) Ok! I think you are all ready. Let me read the

4 procedures. (PAUSE) First step, Locate the given latitude and longitude on

5 the map. Let me read the points to be plotted.

6 First Point , we will plot point by writing a dot where 5°N and 115°E meets or

7 intersects, (PAUSE) Can you follow? (PAUSE) Great! ( VIEW SLIDE 8 )

8 Now Let us plot point B and Write a dot where 15°N and 115°E intersects.

9 Good Job! ( VIEW SLIDE 9 ) Next try to locate 21 °N and 120 °E for point

10 C. Place a dot. Well done ! ( VIEW SLIDE 10 ) Let’s do it together for point

11 D. Look for 25 °N and 120 °E respectively. You can do it! Well Done ! ( VIEW

12 SLIDE 11 ) This time let us plot Point E given the latitude value of 25 °N,

13 have you seen it? Good! Then for the longitude look for 135 °E, write a dot

14 where they meet. ( VIEW SLIDE 12 ) Finally, for the last point its point F, 5

15 °N and 135°E. Put a dot now. Great Job! ( VIEW SLIDE 13 )

16BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

17RADIO TEACHER: For the second task, you need to connect the plotted points by drawing a

18 line from point A to B, B to C, C to D, D to E, E to F and lastly F to A ( VIEW

19 SLIDE 14 ) there you have it, the region within is the Philippine Area of

20 Responsibility or PAR. (PAUSE) It is the job of PAGASA to monitor all

21 tropical cyclones that enter this area. Good job my dear learners. Remember

22 that these lines are only imaginary but very important especially for

23 meteorologists. ! ( END of SLIDE)

24BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

1RADIO TEACHER: You are now ready to answer the follow up questions in your compendium

2 of notes on page 24. ( VIEW SLIDE 15 ) Question Number 1: If a typhoon is

3 located at 15 ON, 138 OE, is it within the PAR? Write your answer on your

4 science activity notebook. (PAUSE) . ( VIEW SLIDE 16 ) There you have it !

5 If your answer is NO, you are correct!

6 Now let us move on to Question No. 2, ( VIEW SLIDE 17 ) How about if

7 typhoon is at 14ON , 117 OE, is it inside the PAR? (PAUSE) Amazing!

8 ( VIEW SLIDE 18 ) f your answer is YES you are right! It is inside the PAR.

9 Question Number 3: ( VIEW SLIDE 19 ) What does Philippine Area of

10 Responsibility mean? (PAUSE) Very Good! PAR is an area in the

11 Northwestern Pacific where PAGASA, the Philippines national

12 meteorological agency that monitors weather occurrences that enter or

13 develop in PAR.

14 Question Number 4: ( VIEW SLIDE 20 ) What is meant when a typhoon

15 entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility? (PAUSE) Good thinking !

16 When typhoon enters the PAR means it has already the capacity to landfall

17 on a certain area inside the PAR. When a typhoon is outside the PAR it has

18 an international name. When it enters the PAR, our weather agency

19 PAGASA names the typhoon based on the local name as a sign that the

20 weather system enters the country. ( END of SLIDE)

21BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

22RADIO TEACHER: Did you get the correct answers? If yes, tap your shoulder twice, then say

23 GOOD JOB SELF !! You are now a young meteorologist!! So, now you

24 know how to plot the PAR and determine if the coordinates are within or
- more -
1 outside the PAR. If not, review your answers and do your best to get a

2 perfect score or nearing a perfect one so you would have a better

3 understanding of the activity. (PAUSE) Are you ready to start tracking a

4 typhoon? (PAUSE) But wait, I know you are all excited but, that will be our

5 next lesson on Wednesday!

6BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

7RADIO TEACHER: That ends my discussion for today, I hope you listened very well to our

8 discussion. (PAUSE) Keep it up! (PAUSE) Let’s wrap up today’s lesson.

9 Cyclones are tracked in terms of latitude and longitude coordinates.

10 ( VIEW SLIDE 21 )

11 LATITUDE is a horizontal lines running East to West on maps; it is

12 used to plot or find locations; locations are described in terms of degrees

13 latitude and by degrees longitude. (PAUSE) LONGITUDE is a vertical line

14 running North and south on maps; it is used to plot or find locations.

15 By giving a precise latitude and longitude we can pinpoint the

16 location of the typhoon. (PAUSE) In the Philippines, we use the same

17 word for all categories of tropical cyclones. We call it Bagyo whether it is

18 a tropical cyclone, tropical storm or a typhoon. It is accompanied with very

19 strong winds, heavy rains and very large ocean waves. According to

20 PAGASA, there are about 20 tropical cyclones that enter PAR. But where

21 is the Philippine Area of Responsibility? You have learned the exact

22 dimensions of this domain are the area of the Western North Pacific

23 bounded by imaginary lines connecting the coordinates: here are 5 0N

- more -
1 1150E, 150N 1150E, 210N 1200E, 250N 1200E, 250N 1350E 50N 1350E.

2 ( END of SLIDE)

3BIZ: MSC UP AND UNDER

4RADIO TEACHER: It’s time for the assessment. Let us see if you gain knowledge from our

5 discussion. Get your science notebook and your pen. I will read 4

6 questions and I want you to listen and understand carefully the questions,

7 write the letter of your choice in your science activity notebook. Are you
