15 Okay let me just give you

16 some reminders about how to use the module.

1 VOICE CLIP REMINDERS IN USING THE MODULE

2 Alright, are you now ready to learn something new today? Let’s begin.

3 RP STINGER MSC 3 SECS UP THEN FADE UNDER

4 RADIO TEACHER:

5 Today, we are going to discuss the process of using unless in stating

conditions.

6 “Unless” means “if…not.” “UNLESS” is a NEGATIVE conjunction .

7 In sum, both “if” and “unless” are adverbial conjunctions of condition.

8 Whereas “IF” is a positive conjunction, “UNLESS” is a negative

condition.

9 Unless means if not. We use unless in conditional sentences instead of

if not.

10 How to Use UNLESS

11 Unless is similar in meaning to if not and can be used instead of if not

in certain types of conditional sentences

12 Like if, unless is followed by a present tense, a past tense, or a past

perfect tense

13 For example: You will not gain high score in *IELTS exam unless you

learn English every day. (You will not gain high score in IELTS exam if

you do not learn English every day.)

14 Another one, he wouldn’t be late for the train unless he forgot his

luggage. (He wouldn’t be late for the train if he did not forget his

luggage.)

15 Unless I had walked in the rain last week, I wouldn’t have been sick. (If

I had not walk in the rain last week, I wouldn’t have been sick.)

16 IMPORTANT NOTES TO REMEMBER. We cannot use unless in

questions: What will you do if you do not pass this final exam? (NOT:

What will you do unless you pass this final exam?)

17 We don’t use will or would in the clause after unless: Unless we leave

now, we can be late. (NOT: Unless we will leave now, can be late.)

18 Just always remember the correct structure on using unless. Okay?

19 We will continue after this friendly reminder.

4 This is the example, If destruction of the world’s habitats in Asia, Africa,

and South America is not stopped, many animals will soon have just

one habitat – the zoo.

5 Unless destruction of the world’s habitats in Asia, Africa, and South

America is stopped, many animals will soon have just one habitat – the

zoo. (PAUSE) Easy! Right?

6 Here is your Text: Some of the world’s oldest habitats are in Asia,

South America, and Africa. Pollution and destruction of these habitats

(woods, jungle, marsh, forest) have been going on for many years,

sometimes hundreds, or even thousands. If one animal, bird, or inset

disappears, all the others suffer, too. This is what’s happening to the

rainforests of Asia, South America, and Africa. Man is destroying an

area of rainforest as big as Switzerland every year. There is only one

way to save wild animals and wild habitats – conservation. That

means: 1. Protecting animals in danger by law 2. Opening more

national parks 3. Building fewer new roads 4. Planting more trees 5.

Cutting pollution If this doesn’t happen, many wild animals will soon

have just one habitat- the zoo.

7 You may continue with the rest of the items right after this, okay?
